I’m not a big frozen pizza kind of guy, in fact, for the most part, I hate them. Then comes along Palermo’s Frozen Pizza, and I have to rethink my position. To start off with, let’s go through the multitude of choices you have with this brand. They have everything from breakfast pizza, which comes with scrambled egg, bacon, sausage and cheddar cheese, to flatbreads. Their Thin Crust varieties are amongst my favorites. The Margherita, Sicilian, Garden and Spinach, Bacon and Feta are to die for. Even though the crust is thin, the crust stands up to the ingredients and doesn’t get soggy. Then there is the Pizzeria-styled pies, which falls between thin and rising crust as far as thickness goes. The Roasted Vegetable is the star here, with a kick-ass tomato sauce, broccoli, red onion, red and yellow peppers, and 3 cheeses(mozzarella, Romano, and Parmesan). The Supreme is nicely made too, but if you can only get one, the Roasted Veg is the way to go. The Rising Crust is great as well, and I was surprised when I found the Three Meat and Supreme to be my favorites. Typically frozen pizza meat blows, but here they actually tasted really good, and not overly grease or super dried out(frozen pies tend to be one or the other). The champion of Palermo’s line of food are the flatbreads. Every single one of them is a winner. I typically hate pizza that has chicken on it, but the BBQ Chicken Flatbread was well seasoned and savory. Again, the Roasted Veg was to die for, and the Italian Sausage and Mushroom was killer. The sausage was perfect! Now the hard part, I was in Milwaukee recently, and was able to taste first hand how great all of the pizza were, however, not everyone sells them here in MI. I know that the Meijer on 26 Mile Rd. in New Haven sells them, and I’ve seen them at Costco before, but that was years ago. The manager at Palermo told me that a lot of Meijer locations on the Eastside carry them, so either call your local store or check the Palermo website to see for sure. I’m not saying my first place to go for food is the freezer, but now that I know there is a viable, filling option with real Sicilian recipes, I am down for changing. If you can’t support a great family place like this that is socially conscious, who can you support. So next time you find yourself wondering what to get in the frozen food isle, think of Palermo’s and your tummy will thank you.
