While on vacation in the Milwaukee-area, I was very much missing my uke(damn you airlines making it impossible to bring a concert uke into the cabin). I visited a range of music stores, including the Brookfield Guitar Center, Cascio/Interstate Music, and Wade’s, but to no good end. At last, I stumbled upon North Star Music and found ukulele heaven. I found a nice array of instruments, all tuned, ranging in builds from all laminate to solid wood, from entry-level to professional, and from soprano to tenor(I did not notice any baritones). The owner was more than happy to give me the sonic and mental space to come to a decision, and then happily installed a strap button on my lovely new concert Ohana. There was a gig bag to be had, also. In addition to ukuleles, North Star also has a very nice range of guitars, as well a smaller number of folk instruments like pennywhistles. So far as I can tell, North Star Music should be the first stop for the Milwaukee-area uke player. Update: North Star has closed for good, according to the local newspaper. The owner has retired. Sad news. The region is the poorer for this loss.

My husband bought my super-awesome Christmas present from North Star music — a ukulele! Joe was very helpful and informative, and gave my husband advice every step of the way before he made his selection. Joe went out of his way to help my husband pick out the perfect ukulele, and also helped him pick out a case and a book to go along with it. I went back a week after Christmas and ordered«The Daily Ukulele — 365 Songs for Better Living.»(The book is fantastic, by the way.) North Star also sells reasonably priced guitars, basses, amps, and music books to help enrich your musical aspirations. A very cool location, and a wonderful music store that will help you find your musical muse along the way. Thanks Joe!
