Before I went to Freya, my hair was very damaged with an uneven, choppy cut that needed serious help. Maria honestly gave me the best haircut I’ve ever had! She spent the time perfecting the cut and getting rid of my split ends (which was a lot). She was very sweet, easy to talk to, and made me feel comfortable right away. My hair looks amazing now and really healthy and shiny. I would recommend her and Freya to anyone :)

I really, really, really hate to be the one to disrupt the constant flow of 5-​star reviews, but I gots to be that person. I came to Freya on the high recommendation of a coworker. With glowing 5-​star reviews up and down the page, I was actually excited to spend a good chunk of money ($ 80) on a haircut. I have wavy hair that doesn’t know what to do with itself, and I came for a Deva cut.
Learning the Deva system has been extremely helpful. I’ve found the way to harness my natural ringlets. Too, I know what to do to my hair so I don’t have to spend forever styling and perfecting the curls in the morning.
That’s swell and great. But the cut itself is plain horrendous.
It’s the most uneven haircut I’ve ever had, including the cheap, cheap, cheap haircuts that cost $ 6 and those haircuts done by students. Even when I use everything to have it be curly and it curls, one of the sides is ½ an inch longer than the other. It’s noticeably shorter, and this started about 1 week after I had my appointment. I get that hair grows in different rates, but after a week?! I think it just took my that long to notice exactly what was so off. It didn’t look quite right even the next day.
I’d rather drive up to my hometown, go to my long-​time stylist, and pay for the gas and cost of the cut than pay to have it cut locally here. Everyone was perfectly lovely. I wouldn’t prevent anyone from going, but I personally will not be back.

Everyone was extremely friendly! Place feels laid back and cozy but in a chic and professional way.
I’m in the middle stages of growing out a pixie and Alex was amazing! She did wonders with my awkward layers while managing to not cut off any length — it’s basically a bob now — thanks Alex!

It always feels like such a treat to come here for my haircut and color. Very cute salon and friendly staff. Alex is awesome! Before I found Freya, I was still driving to my stylist in Chicago even though I’ve lived in Milwaukee for four years now. I just couldn’t find a place I liked and trusted as much. I am so so happy I took my friend up on her recommendation and tried this place. I’ve never left disappointed. A real gem.

Go to Maria! She saved my hair! I chopped my hair off a few months ago and something wasn’t quite right but Maria listened, looked at the pictures I brought in and gave me the hairstyle I’ve been envisioning in my head. From the consultation to the blowout at the very end, I would definitely recommend Maria and Freya salon all the way!

I know it’s cliché, but I, like other reviews, would call my Deva cut life-​changing. For years, I’ve struggled with thick, frizzy hair of an uncertain texture, that was big, and tough to brush/​comb, but didn’t seem to be particularly curly, to me.
After getting one too many triangle-​head haircuts at other places, I somehow stumbled into Josef’s capable hands, and he gave me the best haircut I’ve ever had. He cut my hair dry (this has never happened before!) and gave my hair a great shape. Then, he taught me how to wash/​style my hair myself, to get my hair looking its best. And guess what — it’s curly!
My hair has been impossible to style for years, and now, I get compliments on it all the time. Nobody believes my hair was just this curly all along. It was kind of an expensive haircut, but well worth it, because I actually like my hair, for the first time in years. I’ve had plenty of mediocre-​to-​terrible haircuts in other salons around town. For someone with a tough hair texture like mine, this is the only place to get your hair cut.

Maria is the best! I get bored easily with my hair but she always keeps it fresh and stylish without being fussy. She is also great with my two little boys and husband! Its a family affair.

It may seem a little over zealous to say this, but my DEVA cut with Tess at Freya was a life changing experience as far as my hair cut experiences have gone. I was in the market for a new stylist after seeing the same person for the last 12 years. When I first started seeing my previous stylist I felt she understood and knew how to cut my curly hair and was recommended to me because she knew curly hair. In the last 5 years or so though, I became dissatisfied, as she began to straighten my hair a lot and seemed to forget about my curls. I love and embrace my curls and finally decided that I needed to find someone who could show me how to get the most out of them. Enter Freya Salon. My mom told me about Freya, as a woman she does yoga with has curly hair and said she went to a salon where they had stylists that specialized in curly hair. I called up and inquired, and they told me about the cuts and prices, and although I was nervous about the price, I went with the DEVA cut since it was designed for curly haired people like myself. I am BEYOND HAPPY I did and my hair has NEVER been this curly, and beautiful in my life. I am so pleased, and already scheduled my next appt. It was totally worth the cost, and I will never look back. Thank you Tess and Freya for showing me my true curl potential. I am so thankful. :)

My haircut with Tess was nothing short of terrible. At one point she told me she could «do what I wanted her to do or she could do what she knows will look good.» That was more than a little insulting. What she thought looked good was to give me a cut with way too many layers and an odd overall shape. Not sure what technique she used while cutting but the «texture» she added at the ends of my layers only left my hair looking like I was overdue for a trim. I tried to give it time and make it work with different styling but I just don’t like it. I would have gone back to have it «fixed» but I asked specifically to not have her do it and they called back wanting to schedule me with her again. No thank you.
I had been a happy client of Steph for many years and wanted to still give them my business after her departure but I guess it’s time to look elsewhere.

I went to Freya for the first time today and it was an excellent experience. I have major trust issues with my hair but figured since I’m newish to the area it was about time I find a salon. Katie cut my hair and she did a great job! She was super nice and chatty which made me feel very comfortable. I was offered tea, coffee or water by the receptionist right away and again by Katie before my cut. She knows her stuff and gave me a lot of great tips as far as styling my curly, somewhat bipolar, hair. I will definitely be back to see her!

I really loved Freya Salon, they have a cozy little sitting area and offer you tea while you wait. Maybe a little weird … but I appreciated the magazine selection too — some salons only have trashy magazines, but Freya had Dwell, Travelers Magazines, etc.
Molly did my hair, a cut and highlight. I loved it! She did a gloss… which somehow I’d never had before despite 10+ years of getting highlights. My hair feels soo soft and the color is perfect, looks natural just how I like it! So glad I found a place to go since I’m new to Milwaukee!

When I was 20, all I had were bad haircut experiences. Never did I enjoy getting a haircut for anywhere and I finally looked into a best rated salon to get my next. That is when I found Freya. In the heart of Bay View, it stands with beautiful exposed brick and vintage, 50’s modern furniture in a modernly stylized interior. My problem with salons in Milwaukee is that it seems the owners try too hard to create an image — I think of every teal walled, Moroccan Oil filled to the brim, and gaudy chandeliers, or salons that are so white and posh and reception desks so scary you wonder if you dressed well enough. I also see the most men getting their haircuts here than I’ve seen at other places. And man, do men leave looking sharp.
Freya is none of those. It’s urban, modern, clean, and everyone is so friendly. They display local art so well and beautifully, they serve coffee, tee, beer, and white and red wines. Their price scared me, as I was used to 20 – 30 dollar haircuts. But Maria, who I’ve been seeing for three years now, always does a fantastic job with my hair.
The salon is owned by six of the employees, leaving one chair that is rotated frequently by 2 – 4 other stylists. The receptionists, which there are several, are always very organized and professional and have helped me book appointments in short notices as well as months in advance. If you refer a friend, you also will get a coupon. When you book an appointment and give them a cell number, they text you in advance your appointment time and date which I find very handy.
So, yes, I’ve seen Maria a total of a dozen times and she does anything I’d like perfectly, and when I try to be too adventurous, she’ll give her feedback which I appreciate. My last appointment was with Emily, who is their master colorist if I say so myself. She has fixed my friends hair that was so badly colored that it needed to be stripped completely and re-​colored, and she even got her natural color to a tee which my friend hasn’t seen in years. She has done my mother’s hair, who is in her mid 50’s perfectly as well (full color, highlights, and covering grays). I wanted to color my hair a ombré purple with pink, and Emily did a perfect job explaining to me the process and what to expect, she is such a wonderful person to have you do your hair and it was a great experience.
What I also like about Freya is that they do not push products they do not believe will work for you, and they have more variety than just Moroccan Oil. Leaving Emily I wanted to buy over three Kevin Murphy products, but she insisted I buy only one because it encompassed the three products in various ways and it fit my hair color and texture best, and she also recommended over three shampoos but would note if clients have complained about certain ones or which ones smelled best.
Meet Emily and Maria, they’re my favorites out of the salon. And if you know men who need a well done cut, recommend this place!
I also want to mention that my last two visits I’ve seen kids at the salon. The staff was unbelievably accommodating. They will bring out an additional chair for the child and have them sit next to the station, and I’ve seen all the staff be very friendly to them. One customer had an accident and the staff even brought additional towels and let them use their bathroom, with no scoffing or punishment. Was very surprised to see.

Freya is amazing. My stylist is Maria, she is great. She takes my feedback and always does an amazing job. She is a great person and it helps to really enjoy your stylist as a person. I highly recommend this salon and as others said, it took a while to find a good go-​to salon but Freya is mine!!!

All I can say is WOW! I found Freya after doing a search for salons in the Milwaukee area that are Deva Curl certified, and then followed up with reading Unilocal reviews. My hair is naturally thick, curly, and haircuts can easily become a disaster when the person with the scissors doesn’t know what they are doing with curly hair– ESPECIALLY since mine also straightens easily.
I called on Thursday and was able to get in with Molly for a cut, highlight, and gloss for Friday at 6pm. For someone who travels for work as much as I do, being able to get into see your stylist that quick is a total plus. It may be because it was the Friday before Halloween and people were out at parties, but for a salon with this many raves, I was impressed. Nothing worse than needing a cut and color, and having to wait for two weeks. Another plus? They offer text message reminders about your appointment, which is SO much more convenient than a phone call and/​or voicemail!
I arrived for my appointment and was offered coffee, tea, beer, or wine while I waited. While I really would have loved a beer, if I had accepted, I knew it would probably be the longest cut in history with me having to use the bathroom every two seconds.
Molly listened to exactly how I described wanting my hair to look! I’m used to my highlights being covered over with color so that they blend in, but she used gloss, which made my hair SO shiny and soft. As she was washing my hair, she thoroughly explained how Deva recommends washing curly hair, and drying it once out of the shower.
Oh, while we were waiting for the gloss in my hair, she waxed my eyebrows and they are freaking fantastic too– no big red blotchy spots or anything!
Since I occasionally blow dry my hair straight (especially in the winter) we didn’t do a Deva cut, but Molly explained what I should do before coming in for one, which I’ll probably do once the weather gets warmer again. BRRRRRR, was it chilly when I left! She did part of the cut wet, dried my hair, and then finished the cut before using a straight iron. Usually when a stylist uses a straight iron, I have my hair tie back in my hair in two seconds flat, because I look like I have a mullet. Not with this cut! The layers in my hair all fell together perfectly. The highlights in my hair are barely noticeable (what I wanted) and give the impression that each strand is different and I’m in love with the color!
Some other things I really love about Freya? All the stylists are owners of the salon, and not just renting a chair from someone. Molly sent me home with some samples of the products she used in my hair to try at home, rather than pushing me to buy them that night, which honestly, I will probably go back and buy because I love how they work!
Molly was super nice so easy to get along with and talk to– even for this tired gal who has been on the road non-​stop for the past 6 months and hasn’t been her usual chatty self lately. I hope Molly knows that I am not ever letting her retire, because I don’t know if I will ever be able to let anyone else near my hair again after her… for the first time in a long time, I feel really good about how I look!

After moving to Milwaukee two years ago and having awful hair cut after awful hair cut I’m finally in love with my hair again!
Tess, my stylist, was absolutely stellar. I had actually walked into the salon looking to see if they could save my hair and set me up with a future appointment and Tess offered to take me right then! She listened to what I had loved previously with my typically unruly curly hair and what I hated about it at the time. She took a tremendous amount of care and I left FINALLY loving my hair again. A week post cut and it still looks and feels great!
The salon itself is very lovely — nice exposed brick wall and concrete floors that work very well with the style. The waiting area is comfortable and they have a nice selection of treats and reading material. Oh! I even got some free product samples on the way out as well.
Everything about this experience was wonderful and will definitely be going back as I cannot recommend Freya Salon and Tess enough.

When I first moved to Milwaukee, I had no idea where to go to get a good haircut. I live on the east side, so I feel like I’m surrounded by cheap places that I’m [perhaps unreasonably] scared to go to (such as The Cutting Group), Aveda salons (e.g., Neroli), and barber shops. I tried an Aveda salon in Brookfield the first month or so we were here, and I had to accept that Aveda products do absolutely nothing for me. I also felt like the girl was a little inexperienced to be working on my unruly tresses. At one point, I went with my sister-​in-​law at a different salon for her haircut, and I ended up begging them to trim my hair because I needed it so desperately. Needless to say, an hour later the guy was STILL cutting my hair, and I felt like crying.
Enter Unilocal.I went by reviews and searched and searched, until finally I narrowed it down between Freya and another salon (whose name I can’t remember). Everyone who reviewed Freya had nothing but kind things to say about the salon and its stylists (who actually own the business together), so I took a deep breath, called the salon, made an appointment with Emma.
I could go on and on about how fantastic Emma is, how she’s an artist who really listens to me when I explain what I want done with my hair, and how she has gone above and beyond a typical stylist in so many ways. Rather than do that, though, I will tell you that she’s excellent, and you should go there immediately and get a haircut.
Molly cuts the husb’s hair, and she gives him the best haircut of his life every time he goes to her. Stephanie cleaned up my hair when I got a bad cut while Emma was on maternity leave, and she did a great job, as well. Everyone is so nice and good at what they do! :)

I’m not very picky but I know when someone’s doing a good job or not. I’m very happy Stephanie did my hair! She choose the colors I exactly wanted and cut my hair with a lot of detail and OMG! The last two times i got my bangs cut at other Salons, they either hesitate to do them because I like my bangs THICK or they make it look uneven and I always have to tell them snip here and snip there, which I feel like I shouldn’t be doing that since they should know what they are doing! but Stephanie cuts bangs perfectly!!! I didn’t have to say a word!
She’s very gentle with her hands and very friendly and I’ve never been happier with my cut and color! Stephanie knows what’s she’s doing fo sho! Thank you!

I am a big fan of this salon.
I had my hair cut here a couple of times and they are always willing to listen to what you want, make suggestions and usually the end results are amazing.
The prices are pretty reasonable as well.
Ask for Molly or Denyse. They are fabulous!

My ex boyfriend told me that my ‘perfectionist disorder’ causes me to be a commitment phobe… this might also apply to the relationships I’ve had with hair salons over the past year. Right now I feel like I’m casually dating a few different stylists.
After having «some space» from Freya, they tempted me to come back with a 25% off your next visit coupon. Since I’m a slut for good value, I decided I was going to cheat on my most recent interest and spend some time at Freya. I called requesting Emma because she has always been very professional, but she only had morning availability. Mornings? No thanks. So I asked which other stylists there are at the master level and had openings in the afternoon… Joseph was available.
I showed up 30 minutes early and they offered me a beer or wine. Now we’re talking! Opted for the beer. Spent a bit of time going through magazines so I’d be prepared to show Joseph some pics and talk about my desires. He knew what I wanted but steered me clear of some of the looks I liked since they would set me back if I was going to try and grow my hair out. I REALLY appreciate that he listened to my needs, but was still firm about NOT doing certain things I suggested. This showed me that he also had a vision and wasn’t going to let me dominate the experience and sacrifice his creative knowledge and expertise. I also asked him for another beer and he said no (sad face)…
Like Emma, he was also quiet… and as always, I was the jabber mouth. So, I asked him how he was feeling, and he said that he wasn’t feeling well because of allergies. I decided not to take it personally that the conversation was one way. Being an artist as well, I can understand how some personalities prefer to get into their zone and aren’t as chatty.
I was really happy with my cut. I think Joseph put a bit too much product into my hair and the settings on his hairdryer and straightening iron were dangerously hot, but the next time I see him, I’l just let him know that. Hopefully he will compromise on that factor. I can really see this cut grown out in about a month and looking fabulous.
It seems like everyone at this salon is very talented. Highly recommended.
