Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin

We checked for my son at the children ER and waited in the ER room #10 for one hour there was no doctor came. I called the nurse and asked when can my son see the doctor? She told me she does not know. We left and went to an urgent care and only 5 minutes later the doctor came!

I am so glad I chose to take my son here. From the minute we walked in the door we were attended to. Minutes after that we were then sent straight back to the exam room. A resident MD greeted us in our arrival. Shortly after that a veteran nurse named Janice came in and translated everything, walked us through everything step by step and even ordered my son a choice of popsicles. She was amazing, warm and very knowledgeable. Another supervising MD came in to check on my son as well.
After all the procedures and following steps were explained, I felt a sense of relief and mostly importantly my son was comfortable.
I felt so good about the experience and additional information given, I told Janice that I would be ‘Yelping’ her.
Kudos, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin staff on a job very well done.

This hospital was a disaster for us. My kids and I had been visiting from out of state when I noticed on a Sunday morning, my daughter (was one at the time) acting a little fussy and pulling on her ear. Being that she had chronic ear infections, I knew the drill. Find doc, get Rx, all would be good. We called urgent care, they said to bring her in and kindly told us about some construction around the hospital. We found the sign that said urgent care and went in. We registered but then I noticed another sign that said «emergency» inside. I clarified that this was urgent care and not e. r with the receptionist and explained the huge price difference in coverage w my out of state insurance. She reassured us this was urgent care. The rest of the appointment was ok. Although the nurse who weighed my daughter thought my daughter was malnourished /​neglected because her weight was low. We then used a different scale, and WOW she suddenly gained 10 lbs! No apology was given, just an oops the scale was not working., saw the doc, daughter had mild ear infection, got rx and left.
2 months later…, I get the bill., over $ 500 from the emergency room. I call to speak to someone and she said I should have known better because urgent care didn’t open until 11;00 am, and I was there at 10;00. I explained that if I would have known it was ER, I would have left and gone to urgent care elsewhere or called her pediatrician back home. Here is the really horrible part., the lady tells me I couldn’t have left. That if I would have tried to leave the urgent care waiting area and gone elsewhere, they would have physically stopped me, called the police and had me arrested for abuse, failure to seek medical attention. I have never been treated so terribly. Although this place is close to grandmas house, we will never return.

Hospital staff amazing, but valet is terrible! Rude people who don’t want to be there. Valet completely ignored me even though they saw my son barely able to stand! Kudos to the staff who sat with him while I waited for valet!

I had an appointment with the consussion clinic and was late 18 minutes and they refused to see my child. I was told they automatically put in a no show at 15 minutes. This is absurd specially because Milwaukee county was under a blizzard yesterday and we got over 12 inches of snow. With bad driving conditions they were very inconsiderate for having me drive 40 minutes one way and turning me away. I feel since Children’s hospital sort of has a monopoly, so perhaps being compassionate or consumer friendly is something they don’t have to be.

Amazing staff!!! We are visiting from California and had to make an ER trip for my three year old when we thought he broke his arm. Everyone was so caring and kind. They made us feel like we were in great hands. Hopefully you never need an ER for your child but this place is incredible! Nurses, xray staff, registration and doctor were all fabulous.

The valet guys at the children’s behavioral building truly go above and beyond the call of duty. Those 3 guys are thee best. Always very helpful, my car door is always open and they are always very professional. They are very, very busy and sometimes takes a bit longer but my car is never brought to me without a smile. They definately need a tip box near their desk as it wld or shld be over flowing. Please extend my extreme gratitude for everything they do through rain, sleet, snow, heat and hail. I so appreciate their hard work.

The staff for my son’s surgery were wonderful. They were friendly, courteous, and answered every question we had. The nurse even put a gown and bracelet on my son’s stuffed dinosaur to help with his fear. He received great care and that’s all that matters. Facility was clean and free valet parking were appreciated as well.

I cannot even begin to list all my concerns after this stay. We have been in five other children’s hospitals, and I have never needed to file this many complaints.

Hospital good. It DO NOT use valet parking. Takes at least 15 – 20 min to get your car. That is not an exaggeration. It happened to me 4 times now.

It’s tough to review a hospital. It’s like reviewing an airport… you don’t go there because it’s gotten great reviews. You go there because you have to and it’s usually the only one in town.
For my family, Children’s Hospital has been a staple in our lives for the last three years. I had all of my prenatal visits and ultrasound at their OB-​GYN clinic, my blood work at their lab, an ER visit while pregnant, our daughter’s birth at their birthing center, and weekly speech therapy sessions at the Masters Family Speech Center. I even took our daughter to the ER when she broke her leg, and then subsequently took her to their orthopedic center for an unfortunate re-​casting and follow up. So you could say I’m pretty familiar with CHW.
More often than not, we receive excellent care. There have been a few times, however, that I felt like things could have been improved upon and communication elevated, but after countless visits (and I mean countless) if I had to choose between CHW and another hospital in SW Wisconsin, I’d always choose CHW.
The hospital campus is enormous. It can be difficult to navigate your first time, but there are information desks everywhere. Its main building is nearly new and has a contemporary and sleek feeling about it. In-​patient rooms are equipped with flat screen TVs and video game consoles.
Parking is free and abundant, except for the ER parking lot which is always over crowded.
And c’mon, free valet parking at the main buildings? Yes please.

My son (has a variety of health problems) was at the Children’s Hospital Emergency Room AGAIN last night — I think the 4^th time this year. As always they were courteous and professional and also took his condition serious. Several other doctors said he had anxiety or some other nonsense and CHW found that he had low blood pressure and he actually had a problem. Thanks Children’s Hospital.

No one wants to see a kid at the hospital, but if you so happen to be a visitor/​sibling/​parent in need of food at Children’s, here are your options:
Café West (1^st floor, near aquarium, gift shop, and visitor check-​in area):
Newest dining area. Open 23 hours a day. They offer paninis, personal size pizzas, build your own sandwiches, salads, and daily specials. It’s probably my favorite place for food of all 3 options at Children’s.
Skywalk Café (2^nd floor):
The grilled cheese is amazing and the seasoned fries are TO DIE FOR. They offer a fairly wide variety of sandwiches, wraps, and salads — many of which taste fine. Limited hours (I think it’s 11AM — 3PM or whenever they sell out their sandwiches)
Children’s main cafeteria (Lower Level):
I would avoid this cafeteria at all cost. The food is sub-​par and I get more stomachaches than not after eating here. If you HAVE to eat here, the «make your own sandwich» option is the way to go.
To be honest, my favorite place to dine is the Froedtert cafeteria. Walk outside through the large rotating doors next to Café West, turn left and continue walking for 1 – 2 minutes. You will see dining tables, parasols, and chairs on your left, outside the entrance to the cafeteria. Their soups are delicious! My favorite is the chicken tortilla soup, available every Wednesday. They have many stations that offer a wide variety of food options: salad bar, soup bar, build your own wrap station, pizza to go, grill-​to-​order station, hot food station, and a fridge with offerings from Outpost. Today I had Cajun cat fish filet for lunch and BBQ short ribs for dinner. Both were very good.
Sometimes I wish I were still a kid. If I had to be admitted to a hospital, I would pick Children’s. The new wing is very calming, colorful with designs (like a flock of birds) on the hardwood floor, and spacious. Flat screen TV, the ability to play Wii and PS3 in my room large private room, wireless internet??? Why, YES PLEASE

Free parking at a hospital? Nice, and greatly appreciated. I have limited experience with the docs here, so I can’t give a gushing review, but I can say that for the credentials of the medical professionals here, it is surprisingly easy to snag an appointment, and clinics are not overly long or crowded. Everthing is new and shiny here, and other support personell are classically Midwestern, cheerful and helpful. If only we didn’t have to come, things would be perfect.
