I love this place. A true piece of east side history… A very diverse crowd from college kids to east side dwellers. The owner is a great guy!!!

A dive bar in Milwaukee that is not too special and is very dark. Plenty of room in this bar although service could be better.

Great dive bar in every good way possible for for a description that usually has a negative meaning. Super cool people behind the bar, great beers on tap, good music playing & good people on the drinking side of the bar.

I was impressed! It was clean, good beers on tap, and a happy hour until 9PM?! You’d be hard pressed to find a cheaper drink on a Saturday night in Milwaukee. Yes its nothing fancy, but you go in knowing it’s a dive bar. I will be back.

Just not what I’m used too

Oh, Axel’s. My daily go to bar because of the lack of air conditioning in my crappy apartment. Cheap alcohol, lots of TVs, and some pool tables /​darts /​other random games in the back. Go to get drunk, go to watch sports, just go for no judgement and to put back a very cheap beer.

We dropped in after dinner to watch a very exciting Final Four game, the bar across the street was too loud and crowded. At this bar there was room to maneuver, everyone has a good view of a television screen, and we were able to actually have a conversation that only sometimes related to the basketball game. It’s not the cleanest bar I’ve ever been in but the glasses were clean. The bartenders always noticed when I needed attention, there were no dishonest hidden up-​charges for ordering whiskey neat, and they served the whiskey in what we used to call, whiskey glasses. A few of the kids got food next door and brought it in here to eat. There’s a very limited selection of liquor and beer, it’s really a dive bar, but honest service and friendly clientele make this a nice dive bar in my book.

Axel’s is a Dive Bar. But that’s a good thing! Every city needs it’s share of Dive Bars. There used to be more dive bars on the east side and alot of have gone the way of the 8-​track tape but Axel’s still stands proudly on Oakland Avenue!
A million years ago, when I was a UWM student, I frequented Axel’s but back then, it was a smaller and much darker dive bar. Axel’s circa, 2013 is much bigger & brighter. So if its possible to improve a place and still keep the whole dive bar vibe going, they’ve done it!
By definition, a dive bar can’t get 5 stars and by giving it 4 stars, I think I would be violating some local ordinance and delegating it to the level of a fern bar (remember those?) so a solid 3 stars is the way to go. With that said, don’t expect a wine list or a clean floor but rather, a nice beer selection, an eclectic group of folks to chat with, and maybe a few interesting memories of your visit! A group of us «old guys» stopped by on a recent Friday night after a UWM Basketball game and we had a blast!
Viva La Dive Bar!

was there last month so here goes its alot more fun when the girls work they talk more and is just better that guy just talks to regulars there was this girl working i got drunk asking her to pick me out shots than left had a good time

Horrible bar! It is very small, loud, and packed. Also it is full of people who you know are not old enough to be drinking. They have decent drink specials but it doesn’t make the night. It isn’t a place to go out and have fun with friends because you can barely move. If you want a horrible dive bar, where you are bound to get spilled on… this is it. ew.

Awful bar! The only thing it has good is cheap beer pitchers. It is dirty, bartenders are not very kind, (except 1) and there always seems to be some sort of fight at the adjacent Gyro place from clients from Axel’s. Ill go for a cheap beer but not to have a really good night-​out experience.

Great dive bar! Cheap drafts during happy hour til 8pm. Good mix of people with UWM close by. Great food next door. Awesome place to spend a night getting plowed!
