History

Established in 1975.

In 1973 divorcés, Rosemary and Homer decided that eyewear shouldn’t be thought of as a crutch for the vision impaired. Utilizing Rosemary’s expertise within the fashion industry and Homer’s technical experience in opticianry, they decided to venture into the new frontier of eyewear as a fashion accessory. They opened Rims & Goggles in SF and then Rims & Goggles of Marin.

In 2006 a new generation began when their daughter Penna moved back from Los Angeles to take over ownership of the Marin County store, bringing her fashion, marketing and design experience to Rims & Goggles of Marin. «Growing up in a business gives you a lot of insight as to future possibilities. My buying and manufacturing trips to Paris and Milan each year fuel our excitement as well as keep us abreast on the latest developments in eyewear. Now, with the launching of the Rims & Goggles online store, our style and vision is available worldwide, offering what has been available in Marin County for over 30 years.»

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Penna moved to Los Angeles to attend Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Eager to work… she soon began designing for several record labels (Motown, Zoo, Columbia), then moved to TV Promo Design for FOX, ABC, CBS and Disney… working on such ledgendary shows as The Simpsons and COPS… (In 1995 her «Fruitopia Simpsons» concept won Best On-​Air Promo at Promax!). Clients include LL Cool J, DreamWorks Records and Warner Bros. and started the amazingly popular Shout​-Outs​.com web site for Teens which just launched their new line of custom illustrated stationery and gifts and was just featured in the 2005 GRAMMY Gift Bags as well as the NAACP Image Awards, designing custom illustrated gifts for such noteables as Oprah, Halle Berry, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Jamie Foxx, Gwen Stefani, Faith Hill, John Travolta, Maroon 5, Marilyn Manson, and more!

I originally bought my eyeglasses here and the service was great, informative, etc. Of course I paid almost $ 600 for my eyeglasses, so I would hope that the customer service would be good! Unfortunately, I just returned to see if I could get a replacement case for my super expensive eyeglasses (the case was falling apart and had been that way since about a month after buying the glasses). I was told that I would have to pay $ 10 for a new case! For a second I started to reach for my purse, but then I realized how REDICULOUS this up charge was! I told the woman: «you mean to say that after spending over $ 500 on a pair of glasses, you are going to charge me $ 10 for a replacement case?». I was matter-​of-​factly told yes. I would rather go somewhere else and give them money for a case if that’s what I have to do, because this place isn’t getting any more of my business. I’m sure that case only cost about $ 1 to make, so to nickel and dime me for that is super bad customer service, and I don’t appreciate it.

I am a new fan of R&G in Mill Valley. I usually have no luck finding a pair of glasses that I like but I found more than a few that I love at R&G. Gina is superb. She is very patient — I must have tried on at least a hundred pairs if not more. She was so supportive, respectful and and hung in there all the way. I love that she never gave up and she was determined to help me through the process. I ended up with 2 pairs of glasses that I absolutely love — they are stylish and functional. I never had pairs of glasses I love so much before. Guido — he is the excellent technician and artist who made sure that the glasses fit me perfectly. I had a nice interaction with Kathleen (sp?) too. This is a very high-​end store, with a very professional group of opticians. I can’t wait to return when I am ready for the next pair. Just got new nose pads for my favorite sunglasses today. I didn’t want to tinker with trying to fix them myself and risk further damage. So they ended up sitting in a drawer for some time. Rims & Goggles looked like a high-​end eyewear retailer at a glance, but it’s also a full-​service optometry. It took the optician less than 5 minutes to put on new nose pads, and the glasses came back fixed and polished, good as new– all for $ 10. I’m so glad I found them.

I have spent several Thousand dollars at Rims & Goggles over the last ~4 years years. One of $ 1000 pair of glasses I purchased a few years ago broke in June and they repaired it at a cost of $ 61 + tax. Well it just broke again at the site of the repair and when I asked them to have it fixed at no charge I was told that the repair place only warranted their work for 30 days. I wasn’t advised about this when I initially had the repair done, but in any case one might think that the retailer would stand behind the product. Obviously that’s not the case, so I assume that any issue with their products just gets deferred to others. Rims and Goggles is a high end optician and charges accordingly. That’s fine in my book if they stand behind their products. I will take my future business to an optician I can trust.

Just came home from my first visit here to have a nut put on my wife’s sunglasses that she had lost. Greeted when I entered, pulled out the glasses from a case, and explained what I needed.
I was informed they did not carry this brand but would look to see what they had to make it work. After a few minutes, the sunglasses were repaired and all was good.
No grief, no gruff, just pure kindness.
Next time I need anything related to glasses, I am going back.

After using R+G for repairs on my various frames, I finally went in to buy a new pair of glasses. Kathleen could not have been more helpful and gracious. We decided on the «perfect frames» and all the «trimmings». However, when I arrived to pick up my glasses, I was non-​greeted by a gentleman that was curt and appeared to be not having a good day. After the adjustments were made for fit, my glasses were handed to me with a «there you go». There you go? After extracting 750 of my dollars, how about «thank you»; or Merry Christmas, even the mid-​point, Happy Holidays would have been welcomed.

These people really know what they’re doing and are always friendly and helpful when I need my frames tightened. I got my first pair of glasses from them and then made the mistake of going somewhere else for my prescription sunglasses. Luckily Rims and Goggles was able to fix the poor adjustment the other place made to my frames.

My daughter and husband wear prescription eyeglasses, and this is the ONLY place we ever go. They have the best selection for kids and adults, all of the employees are skilled at helping customers pick the right frame for their faces, and they have always been honest and helpful. We regularly go in for adjustments and the occasional repair, and we are always treated with friendliness and helpfulness. Sometimes one of the employees gives the impression of aloofness, but he’s actually pretty friendly and helpful in the end. I tell all our friends about Rims & Goggles and will continue to go there (now I need glasses too!) for years to come.

Phenonenal staff, amazing selection… a bit pricier, but I think it’s a minor investment to support a local store with an awesome guest experience all the way around. Walked in for the first time hoping to get a couple of frames repaired — one had been badly mauled by an inept technician at another optician. 15 minutes and there back in shape. The other frame ideally needed an earpiece replaced, which they could only repair as they don’t carry Gucci frames. They recommended I first try to order through my original supplier but gave me an estimate for a solder fix. Very friendly and helpful and to top it off would not accept any payment for the adjustment on the first frame!
As it turns out, I’ll need a new frame for pair two — and I’ll be buying it here!

I finally went to R&G after aimlessly visiting a heap of shops, trying on frames, receiving little or no advice. Rims and Goggles was completely different. The sales assistant was beyond great. I tried on tons of glasses and completely appreciated the feedback. I narrowed it down to a coupla of frames and she had me try them on in front of a full length mirror — so I could get the overall effect. Voila, the choice was obvious. The frames were not nearly as expensive as I anticipated. The digitized lenses are $$$ but HEY, these things work for reading, computer and distance. Excellent.

Having to get prescription glasses for the first time is daunting. Guido was great and extremely helpful. He and other staff answered my dumb questions without a problem. I really wish I had a better experience here because I was so excited to finally be shopping for glasses but I was approached with a pompous snob who hated life, his job, and breathing.
I wasn’t bothering any of the sales people because I wasn’t greeted so I just assumed they were too busy to help me and proceeded to look alone. Not knowing what I wanted I asked a sales person if I could try on some glasses and had some questions. I ask if these glasses come in a certain color which I had tried on at a different store and he sighs, looks at the case and continues sighing and says tells me some excuse so he doesn’t have to go get the look book. Finally, he gets the book because I say I’d like to have it written down and writes my name on a card and files it away. He explains to me that its «store policy» that he cannot share the glasses names/​colors with me and sounds pathetic, irritated, mad, dumb, and ugly. He doesn’t even offer to show me other colors or something similar. I write it down anyway because that is the dumbest policy in the world and I walk away as he sighs for the 100th time and he doesn’t even TRY to sell anything or give any service.
At this point my boyfriend had to leave the store to refrain from being rude.
I walk to the front counter, complain about him and the girl is surprised that he is a jerk. I will never, ever go into this horrible place again. His name is GUIDO (according to urban dictionary, guido is a «sad pathetic excuse for a male») and I hope that he reads this and realizes that he need an attitude adjustment, an intervention on how to be a happier person, and someone to punch him in the face.
And I really hope his manager reads this and knows that I went to 20⁄20 Optical in San Rafael and spent $ 600 dollars within the first 15 minutes of being in there and I will continue to tell everyone my bad experience at Rims and Goggles.

I went Rims & Goggles in Mill Valley after a friend accidentally sat on my prescription sunglasses. I wanted to see if they could fix them, ready to pay for the repair (they were in bad shape!). To my surprise, NO CHARGE! They were so helpful and friendly I vowed to come back when I got my eyes checked, in a month.
I came back like I said because this is the first optical store that I have come across where I felt they had integrity. Not only did I feel respected, I felt they took extra time to answer questions, care for glasses that I didn’t even buy there and the atmosphere was just cool. Their selection is also so big, I didn’t know where to begin… But one of the opticians When we found my new frame, Guido started taking some extra measurements I had never had before… I asked what he was doing. He said they are all certified Zeiss opticians and have the ability to basically «optimize» my prescription the Dr. prescribed with my frame and my face. Never heard of — he said it would give 50% more clarity than my other lenses (which I always had that blind spot I didn’t like).
I picked up my new glasses… I CANNOT BELIEVE IT!!! It’s like my vision is in HD! Fantastic selection of frames, Excellent Service and beyond Excellent Outcome with my new «Optimized» lenses! This is the place for me from now on!
All because my friend sat on my glasses!

Going to the eye doctor for my annual visit is not the most fun thing I do each year, yet I know I should. God knows I might be developing cataracts or whatever and early detection is always better.
I have great eye insurance, but I only get about $ 100 credit for frames, and for $ 100, you can’t get anything creative. In that price range, they all look the same.
I have a break in Strawberry Village every day for about 20 minutes and I’ve always admired Rims & Goggles’ trendy displays and large variety of frames. So … I decided to venture in to see if I could find anything I liked.
Well, I did and I did. Guido greeted me as I walked in. I told him I was looking for a unique frame and so after looking at my face and taking it all in, he disappeared for about three minutes and came back bearing a dozen different frames.
I tried each of the different pairs on and none of them really rang either of our bells. He scooped them up, and came back a minute later with more. My frame was not in this group either. Finally, on the third try (isn’t there something about the third time being a charm?) we found the perfect frame. As soon as I put them on, we both smiled in agreement. Voila!
I made the purchase and when I took the frames to my optometrist, for my annual eye visit, I showed him the frames. I expected some enthusiasm, but he sighed. I asked what was the matter and he told me that, sad to say, he can’t stock «up-​scale» frames because the vast majority of clients in Santa Rosa won’t shell out the money necessary to buy the quality of my frames.
I put them on and he and his wife both looked at each other and in unison said, «Now that’s a great looking frame!»

I’ve wanted glasses for as long as I can remember, but I didn’t want to look like I was *trying* too hard to be one of the bespectacled cool girls. Girls with glasses are taken more seriously as they appear smarter. It’s true!
I’m an editor & since getting my new glasses I’ve actually gotten two jobs I just know I would never have gotten without my perfect frames.
«Lisa» helped me in December & not only did she find me The Glasses, but she listened to me to learn what it was I was hoping to achieve. Lisa brought out a variety of frames & even though I liked the very first pair she had me try on, she insisted I try on more as she explained glasses as an accessory were a very important purchase.
She was right & I now own the hippest pair of Sama frames any girl could ever want or wish for. If Lisa had shown me the neat little box those frames nest in when not being worn, I would have bought them just based on the case alone.
The Rims & Goggles store has frames for every face & style you can imagine. If you’re like I am & become overwhelmed by too many choices, Lisa or any of the other help (I witnessed more than one purchase while I took my time) will narrow down your choices. They’ve all got great taste!
If you need new glasses or your first pair ever, Rims & Goggles will not let you down.
