I could probably write a ten-page review for Camp Occoneechee, having attended as a camper, CIT, and eventually working there as a camp counselor, but I’ll keep it brief. I loved this place. It opened in 1956, and until 2009, hosted thousands of Girl Scouts, functioning as both a residential summer camp and as destination campsites during the rest of the year. When you’ve impacted that many people over the course of more than 50 years, it’s hard to imagine that a place you love so much, and(to be honest) take for granted, could someday cease to exist. Unfortunately the Camp land has been sold for development, with the money being put towards a new, larger site that will service future Girl Scouts for many years. A noble sacrifice, but definitely the end of an era and a sad closure on many years of traditions and memories. I was fortunate enough to visit Camp Occoneechee with my former Girl Scout troop members this past weekend(all of us now grown, with families of our own) and took my two sons. The boys had an absolute blast hiking, finding snakes and turtles, roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over the campfire, and singing songs. It was truly special being able to share a place that means so much to me with my children. Camp Occoneechee, thanks for an amazing final memory. ***Business is closed.***
