Sibley Learning Center

We found this place on accident while cruisin’ our jeep out by the doggy park one evening. We saw a trail entrance and decided to explore. The trail took us amongst mesquite bushes, by the golf course, near a little man made pond, and across the path of several cotton tails and jack rabbits. As familiar as it all was, it did help me to regain a new appreciation for the desert. I have lived here for several years, and didn’t know these nice little trails existed. The end (or beginning) of the loop takes you by a green house and landscaped areas in which sits a little building known as the Sibley Learning Center. It was already late when we first went so I ventured back during a Friday afternoon. In comparison to other nature centers you have been to, this might be small potatoes, but I give them 4 stars for what they have accomplished on what I assume would be very minimal, if any, funding. They have a nice display of local photography and art, an impressive collection of local specimens, an actual lecture hall, and a large reference library. Although the gardens looked somewhat barren for the summertime, I found out that they are a lot more active during the school year. I was actually surprised to see how much they really have going on! They have nature walks twice a week, a group that goes on monthly field trips, and do so much with school kids to educate them about our area! It was really neat! They also have plenty of volunteer opportunities and maybe I myself will become a supporting Sibley Companeros…
