Birds By Joe

My daughter and I recently went for a visit to Birds By Joe. They have a beautiful selection of birds to choose from. Both Joe and his wife are very nice and knowledgeable about the birds.
They even allowed us to interact and hold the birds. If you are looking to purchase a bird we highly recommend that you come to Birds By Joe.

I visited Birds by Joe this past weekend. Yes you walk in to the front of the store and it is well stocked, appears clean, and I was greeted pretty quickly. It is what greets you in the back of the store that is very upsetting. This is one of the dirtiest bird stores I have ever been in. The cages are simply filthy. I am not sure what those with positive reviews are looking at but cages should not look like that. There wasnt a day’s worth of dirt, food, and feces in those cages but weeks worth. The food dishes were low and the water bowls were unclean to say the least. A number of the birds appeared sickly. Joe might be a «nice guy» as the other reviews state and very attentive but you buy a bird in a dirty store you are looking for trouble, vet bills, and possible heartache. There are a number of good clean reputable bird stores in NJ. The Bird House on 18 comes recommended by a very good avian vet and World of Birds in Chester is also a very clean store with nice quality birds.

I took my bird home lastnight that I bought from joe. Been talking with him asking lots of questions and even brought my daughter who asked tons more. Joe is a Awsome guy, went of his way to get a cage for me, so I could bring my bird home on time! I love my new beautiful friend & I love joes birds!!! Almost go!

This is a up-​date from my 3÷30÷15 post. If I could give six stars I would. I bought my red lored amazon from Joe about a year ago. Oh my god he is the best bird in the world !!! His name is Rico, yes we changed it from Domingo. From the moment I set eyes on Rico it was a match made in heaven. After a year I must say exotic birds are incredible pets. This is our first exotic bird. If I knew how easy they are to take care of them I would have never bought a dog!!! Joe is the most knowledgeable person I have ever met in regards to exotic birds. What makes this the best place to get a exotic bird is Joe. Joe loves what he does for a living. We now see Joe every six months, he trims Rico’s wings and trims his nails. Joe’s is over 50 miles from us but its so worth the trip, Rico loves to see him. Robert –Maria and Sammy

They have a large selection of birds. I had been looking for a baby parrotlet so a friend and I walked in there one day. They had about 5 baby parrotlets. I was so excited and they were absolutely adorable. One of the ladies that worked there helped me a whole lot through everything. I was convinced to buy a bird cage there and joe matched the price of the same cage on Amazon. After a few weeks of me going there and visiting my new baby, I got a phone call that they all died. Devastated, I was told that they would get new babies in soon. I had been in contact with someone else who was supposed to get a baby parrotlet that unfortunately passed away and she had picked her new baby. I wanted to wait for a specific color but a few weeks later she told me that one died as well. One day I went there and saw an older healthy looking parrotlet. I held him and fell in love. He wasn’t banded. 2 weeks after having him he became extremely ill and I took him to the vet. They said he had a bacterial imbalance most likely from the pet store. He went downhill very fast as birds do and after a few days of medicine and hand feeding he passed away. I emailed joe to let him know and I didn’t get a response back. Needless to say I’m never going back.

Birds By Joe is the only store you WILL ever need to cover all your feathered friends needs. You walk into a lush and colorful assortment of goodies covering everything from cages, toys, and the newest and most popular foods and treats. Whether your a first time bird owner or an experienced aviculturist. Joe and his staff will always treat you like family and give you all the time and options that are available for you to make well thought out and educated decisions. His bird room is always full of hand fed happy bright eyed baby birds that you can walk through and see first hand. He hand feeds all his babies himself every day and interacts with them daily to check their health and any of their needs. I have 3 birds (all from Joe) and go there atleast 2 times every couple of weeks. There is always something new out there to make your bird healthier or to make cleaning up after them easier for you. Joe not only has all the products but can tell you which products are best for you and your bird!!! Bottom line this store is one of the best operated that I have ever seen. I have never owned a bird before and did my research before coming to see Joe. I wanted a budgie initially but was open-​minded to other birds as long as they weren’t too big. Joe helped me find the perfect fit for me. I ended up getting a canary-​winged parrotlet which is bigger than a budgie (I don’t want to hurt my first bird!) but smaller than some of other birds and parrots. My little guy seems happy and healthy and has a BIG personality. Joe’s shop had the perfect cage, and he ordered me a stand (no instructions) and was nice enough to text me what the final product should look like for me to assemble mine. He has lots of nutritious food and fun toys in the store as well. He was more than happy to answer questions when I call (I am a first time owner!). Overall, a great experience!

Where to even start–
Like other reviewers said, the front of the store is neatly organized with mostly bird supply, there may be a few budgies there as well. There’s literally every type of bird item you could want. When you go past the storefront is where the real fun begins.
You can see through glass paneled walls that the birds are kept beyond the door. Upon entry it is almost overwhelming the amount of birds. It’s really unbelievable that literally every cage is spotless. There was over 100 birds when I went, around the end of march. We (my boyfriend and I) handled many different birds, we were offered to even look at babies in the incubator who had all been reserved, just to take a peak. The place is huge. Most birds are caged alone, a few have a few buddies, depending on the breed and size of cage.
I really love the lory birds, merely their beauty is captivating. I had read that they are uncontrollable poopers. Joe said exactly that, he could of said get the bird it’s a great bird, but he made sure to inform us on every pro and con of breeds we were interested in. Clearly he cares about the birds and wants potential bird owners to know what they’re getting into. He had a great deal of knowledge on every bird and was very personable. We left with a senegal, kiwi, who I am completely in love with. I am so happy we got him from joe, he was a decent flyer when we got him, he flies great now. He is completely healthy and VERY loving. From the first few seconds I had him on my shoulder he was head rubbing me. You can tell a well socialized bird. We have had him a few months and he already knows 5 different commands. We couldn’t be happier with our bird and where we got him from. If I ever considered adding to our flock, there is no question that my business would go straight to joe. He even gave us his cell number because we live within a mile from him and said to call him anytime for supplies and he would meet us so we wouldn’t have to take the half hour trip! Great guy, great shop and awesome birds. If you are looking for a bird or unsure or what breed, just go down to joes and I’m sure he could help you out!

Birds By Joe is an excellent exotic bird shop. I appreciate how conveniently it is located. As a person who grew up raising many different species of birds, I can firmly say that they are messy animals. Aside from the all too familiar sight of moulted feathers and seed husks scattered around the bird room, I thought that the birds were kept in very good conditions.
The shop has a good selection of bird products including cages, toys and feed. The seed mixtures that are sold are very clean (not dusty like other bird shops/​farms) and have a variety of healthy ingredients.
The owner was very polite, eager to help and appeared devoted to the well-​being of his birds. He would walk around to check on the birds and feed hungry babies. He also gave unbiased advice when it came to product suggestions and bird care. Too many places that sell birds persuade their customers to buy and feed pellets. (Some species of birds, such as the Eclectus Parrot, do very poorly on a pelleted diet and should be fed a diet based on fresh foods.) Birds By Joe suggests a varied diet and admits that a «pellet tree» does not exist in the wild.
Customer service appears to be a priority. Every customer, including myself, seemed to be very happy in the shop. The owner allows you to handle the birds (the vast majority are very good-​natured — an indication that they were properly socialised), but he is honest to inform you if one particular bird could potentially bite. I was smitten by a baby Timneh African Grey who happily rushed over to see me as I opened its cage. The fast-​paced waddling was too cute!
There is no doubt that I will be returning to Birds By Joe in the future. Do not hesitate to visit this shop. It has easily become one of my favourites!

Great store, the owner was not only patient but very honest. The store was extremely clean, price are more than fair and the selection excellent. Good shop for the noice and experienced Bird owner.

Now to the review of Birds by Joe.
My wife and I walked into the store, and was greeted by a well equipped bird store, everything a bird might need was there.
We walked to the back of the store, a separate glassed off room, and was met by Joe and Mary, first impressions, both very nice, also the room had a very impressive selection of birds.
We then let them know what we were looking for, and explained our loss, of our bird to them.
They answered, every question we had, and when my wife, turned her attention to a Conure, we were given every needed to know fact about the bird, their knowledge, on the bird, was very impressive. .
After discussing the price, a very good price was offered for the bird by Joe, when I say it was unexpected, i am not understating it.
We immediately accepted the price, and also purchased a beautiful cage.
Our bird is not yet ready to come home with us, due to its age, but that was ok, as it will allow us time to fully pay for the bird, which will be in two months.
And the best part is, until we take the Conure home, Joe told us, we can visit it, anytime, as many times a week, as we want… how do you beat that.
You know what that says, about Joe, he’s a good guy, and the kind of person you want handling your birds needs and care.
Do not waste your time going anywhere else, ESPECIALLY NOT, World of Birds… unless that is, you want to be treated like crap…
Birds by Joe, is the only place you need to know.

i haven’t visited this review, lately, so i thought i would update it.
Since our second Conure, we bought a third Golden Conure, AND also 2 Blue and Gold Macaws, a Green Wing Macaw, and a Catalina Macaw. .check out the picture of the Macaws.
Within 2 months, we will be picking up 2 Scarlet Macaws

End of story…

I brought home two babies from Birds by Joe. A Cape Parrot and a Green Wing Macaw. Both are extremely social and sweet babies. I can hand them off to anyone at anytime and they are well accepted. They are very accepting of new surroundings, food, toys, you name it. The atmosphere at the store is excellent. Joe has a wealth of knowledge and has no problem sharing it with everyone. His selection of toys and food is large and affordable. Overall experience has been tremendous and will always check with Joe first before I decide to bring home another baby!

This store is one of only a handful in NJ that is run by people who truly understand parrots and exotic birds… and, what kinds of people will make good ‘bird-​parents’ for each one.
The many breeds (from cockatiels to hyacinth macaws) are housed in larger cages that are open all around… letting the birds indulge in their basic need for stimulation and flock interaction. Larger birds are put out on perches, where prospective bird-​parents can let them climb onto their arms and shoulders… and, get a real sense of each bird’s personality.
As a result, the birds are much happier/​healthier than the poor creatures you see in tiny (isolated) cages at ‘chain’ pet stores; and, the staff (especially the owner) will ensure that someone looking for an avian companion adopts only the right breed/​specific bird.
In addition to the birds, the store carriers a superior selection of foods (including Harrison’s), cages, accessories, toys, cleaning and disinfecting products. ‘Birds By Joe’ recently moved into a new location at 1309 Bound Brook Road, which provides a great deal of room for both the birds, and customers; making for a superior experience on both sides. I highly recommend this establishment.

simply put, birds by joe is a very welcoming, cozy shop with a genuinely friendly and cheerful owner. my boyfriend, two nieces and i visited joe’s about two weeks ago for the first time with the intentions of going home with a conure. actually, my boyfriend had the intentions; i just went along for the ride. and the nieces, of course, went for the excitement of it all. i had harbored reservations about purchasing a bird without getting to know it first. we have other conures at home, and while they are exceptional birds, i didn’t want to bring home just ANY bird.
the first thing we saw upon entering the store was a lone african gray sitting peacefully in its cage, and with the same excitement of tourists in a foreign country, we went to admire and praise the bird (who only ignored our pleas for him to «talk»). we were then politely greeted by a woman (presumably joe’s wife?), and we chatted for a minute or so before continuing on to the back of the store where the rest of the birds were located. we were immediately engaged and captivated by the many beautiful birds. after a few minutes, joe approached us and after we expressed our interests, he introduced us to the many array of conures they had available. in addition, he introduced us to alex, a beautiful, sweet hyacinth macaw that we STILL wish we could have taken home as well! joe seemed very knowledgeable of the birds, but most importantly, he expressed much patience and care for them. i noticed several other people around me, but i couldn’t tell whether they were staff or customers because everyone seemed equally happy and friendly just being in that shop. it was genuinely a happy atmosphere, very homey and welcoming.
we ended up taking a yellow sided turquoise green cheeked conure home with us. joe worked with us price wise and even threw in a new hut for our new bird. bucky was initially nervous and fidgety, but is slowly warming up to us. he’s sweet and cuddly, with a comical personality, and we have joe to thank for patiently helping us find this new family member. needless to say, we were all pleased with our visit and will be returning.
oh, joe also informed us that the lone african gray we initially saw talks a great deal when he wants. but he has a potty mouth :)

I don’t own any birds but I come here occasionally just to look around. Everything is neat and clean as far as items go. Birds are quite lovely and cages are cleaned whenever I stop by. It’s a nice small, feel-​good, store that any bird lover should visit and buy from. If I ever feel like my allergies are irrelevant and can handle animals, I would definitely purchase a bird from Joe’s.

I have been a customer of Joe’s since he bought the store from the other Joe. I visit the store every other week to get supplies for my birds. When I go to the store for my bird food, Joe or his employee Stefanie is always right up front chatting with customers and ready to say hello and see what you need.
The front part of the store has an extremely large selection of toys, a good selection of cages and a good variety of food selection in multiple sizes and for a variety of price ranges. I have bought the Abba brand food in other stores and found that it had moths in it which I had to throw away and basically wasted my money. The food at Joe’s has always been fresh and I have never had an issue with it. I also buy Harrison’s pellet which is by FAR cheapest at Joe’s. If you know this pellet it is pricey but I get a fair price here. It eases my mind to know I can afford a high quality pellet for my flock.
Contrary to another review, I do not find many of the supposed conditions of the birds. As far as being in a garage, it is a reconverted room but has climate control, is always warm enough and has plenty of high quality air purifiers throughout the room. If you know anything about birds, then you will know that certain birds (i.e. cockatoos and greys) have dander which can cause lung issues, allergies etc. Air purifiers are a must and the ones Joe has are good brands. He had also mentioned he was buying AustinAir purifiers through a local avian rescue which are top of the line and were used in NYC after ⁹⁄₁₁. I personally own them and know them to work (I have both Greys and a Cockatoo as well as several small birds).
In the many times I have been there I have known his cages to be clean (as clean as a bird cage can be) and I have seen him and his staff removing the cages and grates and scrubbing and sanitizing them. The birds all have full bowls of food and I have often seen Stefanie or Joe handfeeding the babies. Joe allows me to interact with the birds and I have no trouble taking them out from their cages or playing with them. They are all interactive, alert and friendly towards myself and my family. The birds can get messy but they are babies and eat formula which gets all over the place and they jump around in their water as well. The staff does spray bath the birds and they are cleaned regularly as far as I have noticed. They take great care of their birds and of yours. I got there 15 minutes before closing recently and Joe stayed half an hour late to allow a family to bond with their new baby (they come in everyday during the weaning process). He also stayed late to allow me to shop around.
While yes, things can get messy I know that Joe and his staff work very hard to keep his store as neat and clean as possible. Anywhere will get a little messy when you put 20+ babies there. To me, his birds have always been friendly and I have never heard of anybody who bought a bird from him having health issues with their birds. In fact, I have seen many people who bring their birds back and are «regulars» there after purchasing a bird from Joe.

I had to correct the prior reviewer Jim B. who may not be entirely correct.
Birds By Joe orders at least some (we have called there before) captive bred birds from a variety of suppliers like most other Bird Shops. The great majority of them for logical reasons are based out of Southern and Central Florida.
I actually live in the area however up until now we historically traveled 90 minutes out of our way to South Jersey where two Bird shops who I will not name so as to not come off as biased or trying to cause a smear campaign. I would consider the two Bird shops in South Jersey as two of the best kept bird shops that I have ever been to in the Tri-​State area.
I visited Birds By Joe as they have a very decent web presence and it was much closer than traveling all the way down to South Jersey for supplies for my pet bird.
When you arrive, it’s a nondescript store. As you enter the store front and start looking carefully at the price tags on their items, by and large nothing is out of the ordinary and their prices were comparable to most other stores and online pricing. I.E. a clear Caitec travel case was priced at $ 138 roughly and was in-​line with anywhere else. The bird supplies were neatly organized and they even had a Zoomed type UVB light lamp for sale which was quite surprising.
My family takes care of our pets with the utmost care and the reason why I bring up that particular lamp is that the bulb that is supposed to generate broad spectrum light (both UVA and UVB wavelengths) actually works vs the several other $ 20+ broadspectrum lights marketing by bird supply companies that have zero UVB. I know this because I own a $ 260 Solarmeter 6.0. It’s zoo quality and industry standard for measuring UVB rays.
The travesty is when you get to the back of the store which is actually a garage. There are about 20 bird cages and one that I believe to be a Cages by Design bird cage. These are cages that are display quality for zoos and private homes they usually sell for several thousand dollars.
It was only upon closer inspection where the RED FLAGS and ALERTS starting chiming like crazy. Out of the roughly 20 birds that were being kept perhaps the Hyacinth Macaw, a Cockatoo and a few others did not display outward signs of illness.
Google signs that your bird is sick; you could check them all off after inspecting the birds. The cages were filthy. We visited on a Saturday and there was at least a week of bird droppings in the majority of the cages.
Other signs of sick birds include:
Several birds with nasal discharge, boogers and moisture out of the nostril holes
Very runny stools
Cage aggression
Lethargic and slumped over
Dirty feathers from lack of preening (birds do this when they are sick or depressed)
The owner was very nice and cheery but was more focused on having a conversation about beer than actually caring for their birds.
A lot of diseases can be transferred via bird dander. We were so appalled and depressed that we went straight home. Instead of going in through our front door, we went the back way to our basement, threw our clothes in the washer and then took a shower to ensure that we wouldn’t contaminate our home and our bird with whatever the birds at Birds by Joe. If the owner cares any bit about his reputation he will clean up his act, bring the sick birds the vet care that they need, take care of the husbandry issues like temperature at night that could be getting these birds sick as well as sanitary conditions.
And most of all never allow any of his customers to ever see what I saw on my first visit to this store. Needless to say I will never step foot in this place again. I hate to condemn mom and pop shops but we are talking about a business that caters to pet people. And the condition that the birds were in at this store was just not something that any bird owner could ever say or admit to being proper.

I don’t keep birds but I was impressed with these guys since they raise their own stock — Parrots, macaws, cockatoos. Nice people to talk to.
