History

Established in 1983.

It all started in 1983 when Gilbert A. Werner and son Mark A. Werner saw potential for a restaurant in an old laundromat located at South Lake Avenue (Stop 2) after many sucessful years and many satisfied customers, it was time to get even closer to the waters of Lake Michigan.

In 2002 Mark, along side longtime friends and employees Bret and Natalie Palmer, relocated Swingbelly’s to an old historic train station located at 100 Washington Street. The original brick and hardwood floors of the station made a setting for nautically inspired décor.

The summer of 2014 Swingbellys had one last move, to a newly renovated restaurant formally known as «Ye Olde Benny’s.» With this move Mark had brought new vision and young talent, his son M.J. (Mark Justin). With M.J.‘s fresh ideas and Mark’s experienced restaurant knowledge, the father and son team was unstoppable in the creation of the new and «improved» Swingbelly’s.

I’ve never left disappointed from here. Decent prices and good portions. Beautiful décor, friendly service, and family friendly atmosphere. The burgers are good, fish is good, and everything else I’ve tried has been good.

First of all, when the flatware hurts when you use it — not a good sign. CHEAP. I was very sad to see a lunch place in the area that was always mediocre take over a great location like Binnys and continue to act like a lunch place — a mediocre one at that — trying to sell itself as a dinner place. Everything that comes out on the plate is blonde — no green, healthy looking food here. Sorry the place is not more like Red Arrow Road House or Bartletts. People — move on down the highway to those other Highway 12 eateries! Pass this one up.

In the heart of cottage country, one would expect better quality food. Service is friendly & efficient, but cannot make up for the shortcomings of food quality. Need to meet up with a few buddies for a couple of bottles of beer? Fine. Looking for a delicious meal? Look elsewhere.

I love going to Swingbellies. The atmosphere is so friendly. I usually sit at the bar and talk to the waitresses. I go there weekly. The Asian salad is my favorite, and their hamburgers are to die for.

my first time here. It was busy because it was labor day but everything was on point in regards to time and service. my group all got different burgers and they were quite tasty! No complaints here. Absolutely will be making the drive just to eat eat here. Cajun fries were great as well. GET THE BURGER!

Thank God Swingbelly’s moved into the old Benny’s. First, we don’t have to wait in line at the old Swingbelly’s; and second, now no one has to eat at Benny’s. I’ve always been a fan of the clam chowder year and it’s still as good as ever. The last time I was here, I tried the ribs for the first time. I’m not sure they were as good as Wagner’s ribs, but they were pretty close. I’m a big fan of craft beer and Swingbelly’s does a fine job putting together a list of local brews with a variety of breweries and styles.

Coming back after 20 years. Great new location, did great things with the the old Benny’s building. We were going to another restaurant who had a 30 minute wait, went to swingbellys and got right in instead. Fast and family friendly. I had the western burger and it was good, I would have liked some tomatoes or onions or something with it. Fries were extra and my chips weren’t that awesome. Overall happy with my meal

I am a big fan of SwingBellys. I have been going to this restaurant since I was a little girl and each different location. The food is always great and the service as well.
They did a really good job with this new location. The bar is great, the décor and lighting are spot on as well.
I am a big fan of the Super melt and the burgers. They also have a great perch dinner!

Great food. Great drinks! Have a Long Island. They are by no means watered down. Their perch are pricey but you pay for flavor and freshness. You’ll probably have a wait but it’s worth it. Have drink while you wait haha

Service was awful! Went in with a group of 7 and was told I couldn’t put tables together. Seriously? You have one other guy in the restaurant. Fine-​went to Tree House where we were welcomed with open arms and spent almost $ 300! Too bad you can’t see a good table when they walk on the door!

I didn’t like that the burgers didn’t come with fries. The cheese fries were made with shredded cheese instead so they were unsubstantial. However the pickles were fantastic! The burger was cooked medium when I had ordered medium well. I am willing to give the place another try, but definitely not my favorite.

Terrible service to get seated. I can not call the lady a hostess because she does not meet the definition. Our family of five was told we would have to wait at least 30 minutes. As we waited everyone that came in was seated even parties of five and four. We mentioned this after 40 minutes and got a stupid remark that if we split up we could get seated. I just had to do a review on this so people don’t let bad businesses take their money. I know some readers of this review will think there was something weird with our group; NO we were not the Beverly Hills Hillbillies.

Good food, good burgers… drinks are a little expensive. My wife got 2 drinks. One was $ 10 and other was $ 8. Good drinks but prices before hand would of been nice. Again good food though.

Went there tonight with a friend I had not seen in 20 years. The wait staff let us have our space while we talked and slowly ate our appetizers and dinner. Great staff with great food. Definitely going back when I’m in Michigan City!

I am a big fan of their burgers. I have tried quite a few burgers in Michigan City and Swingbelly’s has the best burger I’ve tried so far.
The new building is well done, but I liked the old one much more. It still doesn’t keep me from coming in.

I went here with my mother and no one else. We got to the restaurant and there was a 25 minute wait for 2. The setting was nice, very cozy. I’d say the food was ok, nothing to special but eatable. And, the bathrooms were freezing! But, we had amazing service! Our waitress was one of the best ones I have ever had.

BIG IMPROVEMENT ! Definitely larger space with better traffic flow and great deco. Bright and has ample staffing with a good variety of food on the menu. There’s even a variety of items available for Lent. Like I said, a BIG improvement.

Portions are so so, but the the perch was good and the cod was ok too. Love the breading on the perch! Fries have the same kind of breading and I love it, too. I’d love to see perch tacos on their menu with a nice baja mix and a lemon sauce. Would be fabulous!
