Clay Hotel Overbooked & Did Not Honor Reservation
Be very careful with this hotel! Booked it this passed weekend for my birthday and we arrived at 5:00 PM. When we got there we were told that they did not have any record of our reservation. The only reason it gets a one star it’s because I have to give it something!
Lucky for us (we thought), we had a printout of our reservation and an email confirmation on my phone. Nope! That did not even matter or was considered. We asked to speak to a manager, but they were conveniently not at the property. So we asked for the name and address of a hotel that would honor the same room and rate. The front desk person was very unhelpful. All he did was shrug his shoulder and kept on repeating «I understand you but I can’t do nothing because there’s no room available».
We were basically told to leave the property because they did not have a room available and that no one can help us since the hotel was sold out. Thank goodness we found El Paseo Hotel right next door.
I pity anyone who has to ever experience what we did. I hope that anyone reading my review would consider other hotel options. Hindsight is ²⁰⁄₂₀ right? After reading some good reviews of this hotel, we also found some reviews similar to ours.
I understand that hotels overbook, just like airlines; however, they should also respect and honor those potential customers who had planned to stay at their property, instead of creating a VERY unpleasant experience. The least they could have done was to find us a similar room at another hotel (at the same price) or notify us that we won’t have a room so we can make alternative plans. STAY AWAY!!! AS FAR AWAY AS YOU CAN!!!

First timers in Miami. We got in about 3 hours before checkin. We have a little baby and they got us in a room very early! The staff is super friendly. Definitely not what I was expecting. We go out of the hotel onto a street and it’s hidden kind of. The bell man helped us with our bags. Room was tiny but still worked for us. I will start with the Pros: Great area, tons of shops and restaurants all around you, had everything we needed for our stay (tv, refrigerator, microwave and coffee machine.) Friendly staff. Valet parking $ 25 a day. But worth it because there is no parking and if you find one its like $ 4.00 an hour. They provide beach towels and umbrella and chairs at a certain spot on the beach! Cons: I was over charged $ 53.00. Took me twice going to talk to someone to get it refunded. Still waiting to see if it actually goes through. Room: still kinda dirty. I had someone’s fake eyelashes on the floor. No chairs on the balcony like the others. Atmosphere: Loud! Very loud at night. We didn’t know. But it’s okay my son still slept through it. Ends at about 12−2am. We got lucky and it rained people out lol. Since it rained… My husband we out to get food and slipped down 2 flights of stars… Hurt himself pretty bad. Called the front and they wouldn’t help at all. There was no sign saying slippery or anything! Thank god he wasn’t holding our son. They offered to send us a doctor but at out cost. Still don’t know how I feel
About how they handled that. :(Breakfest: is a block up the road. It’s bare (toast, bagel, fruit, cereal) I’m okay with that but they only have one toaster for about 15 – 20 people at a time. We just ended up leaving to go eat somewhere else! Overall I’m indifferent. I loved it but I didn’t. I would stay there again but not with my son.

I booked my room on
back in January I booked a deluxe room with two beds and a bathroom separating the beds. I purposely booked this room because my friend and girlfriend were coming to give them some privacy. My card was charged the deposit and I made sure to follow up a week before my trip to ensure my reservation was still on file and that the room type is what they had reserved for me. I was assured everything was fine and that I had a final balance of about $ 590 something also that I could use a different card other than the one I reserved the room under. At check in they swiped my card for the remaining balance which was a different amount I was previously told the resort fee was included with the total I was given the week prior which it was not my card was charged over $ 600 and my original card was also charged over $ 700. I went to check on my room where I found it was a single bed in the room I promptly called the front desk where I was told to come down as I was speaking with the desk agent another couple was complaining about the same issue and there was an international traveler that was told her reservation did not exist despite having documentation that it was reserved. The manager talked to all of us and went on to blame the booking agents for the room issues he stated since I booked on
that they utilize a company in London to make the reservations and that they were told we both reserved a single deluxe room not a double. He basically told me there was no other rooms available and that I had to talk to
to fix the issue. Eventually they fixed it and I moved on to the Circa 39 hotel on Collins but I’m pretty sure this hotel has had this issue in the past and that they need to address this with the booking companies they deal with. I was not satisfied with my service at all it seemed to me that I was basically on my own to resolve this issue and I am currently waiting on my refund to my cards. I would not recommend this hotel they just shift blame on booking on the booking agent and don’t provide any kind of compensation. I’m giving two stars just because the room was a nice looking room but not what I booked.

I have never been so disappointed. I reserved my room January 2016. In the reservation It clearly stated it would charge my credit card the $ 50 deposit to book the room and I could pay at time of check out at the hotel. My husband and I put in our vacation time at work to come to Miami to stay at the clay hotel for my birthday weekend as we haven’t had time in over two years to ourselves due to working and having a baby. After driving many hours we get to the front desk at 8:30pm for them to tell us our reservation was canceled. I asked why and they said because earlier that morning they charged my card for the hotel stay (never checked in) and it was declined. They never called to notify us of this or see if we wanted to pay another way or even let us know it was cancelled. I called Monday morning to complain to the manager which she in turn replied with «so what do u want us to do about it» Thank God we didn’t fly from another state. I had to then turn around and drive back to north Florida. All plans we canceled. Below is a picture (where it says additional hotel services) confirming all fees and hotel stay will be charged AT THE END of the visit. HORRIBLE HOTEL AND LOOKED CHEAP!!!

Looks are very deceiving, at 1sft when i walked in it didn’t seem like a place where to stay from outside didn’t convince me. I had a bad experience with the 3^rd party I purchased my reservation & i got it fixed. The assistant supervisor Lizandro was very helpful, very kinda. There hospitality was great from everyone. The rooms very clean. This hotel is in a neighborhood type of vecindario, i fell in love with & ill will definitely come back to stay here, is located around restaurants, shops & 2blocks away from the beach.

We just got back from a stay here last week after staying at the Chesterfield on 8^th and Collins and I’ll say we definitely felt like we should’ve just come to the Clay hotel in the 1^st place.
The Chesterfield is apart of the SBH group of hotels where you’re treated more like a #, not a guest by most of the customer service people just because of the sheer volume of people coming through based on its low price. as it was pretty much the cheapest place to stay in the heart of South Beach. However, once we got to the Clay, it immediately felt like quite the opposite. We were greeted very warmly, got into our room 3 hours earlier then check in and the room was quaint, clean, charming and it had a lot more to offer then the Chesterfield for sure. The room had a microwave and a fridge, a remote control cooling unit, a ceiling fan, a desk, a chest of drawers, an extra blanket, coffee maker, oh and best of all, you get complimentary beach chairs, umbrellas AND beach towels! We spent 35 $ the day before renting 1 beach chair and an umbrella before getting to the Clay. Also no hold on your card for any incidental fees at the Clay. You’ll also get a complimentary breakfast, nothing major, fruit, toast and juice, but it’s something, versus nothing.
Overall, it’s a great little hotel, in a great location.

My husband and I were very disappointed with this hotel. We paid $ 146 plus $ 20 for valet. Our room was very small and the carpet was very old and had stains. The restroom only was renovated but super small. The so called «breakfast» was just bread and coffee. It was not good. Overall it was a very bad experience we will not come back nor recommend this to anyone. The only good thing was the location to walking restaurants.

I booked this hotel for my sister’s bachelorette party and was very disappointed In what we got. When we got there we found out that I only had reservations for one room but had charged me for 2, however the front desk girl was accommodating and gave us both rooms for a discounted rate. The rooms we got looked nothing the like pictures. The rooms were not very spacious or updated in comparison to the pictures. There was only one mirror in the room which was in the bathroom (not a good thing for a group of girls). There was a safe in the room to keep out belongings, however it wouldn’t open when we put in our code. The screen said low battery the first time. We called the front desk for someone to come fix it, the maintenance guy came up and reset it, but didn’t change the battery. He also felt the need to tell us how we’re so busy on our phones and that people don’t know how to communicate now a days. The second time our safe didn’t open the man came up and looked at the safe for a couple of minutes and said he would be «right back.» 40 minutes later and there was still no sign of him. We called the front desk and they told us that he would be back in the morning. We had a 6am flight and told them they need to send someone right away and that we needed the stuff in the safe. They said they would «try» to send someone. Someone finally came after another 30minutes and had to saw the safe open. We felt that the some of the front desk people were not very welcoming and it almost seemed like we were bothering them.
The location is great. We were a 5 minute walking distance from the beach and Lincoln road mall. Also, espanol way is awesome! The housekeeping staff was also good about coming around and cleaning the room. I honestly don’t think I would stay here again despite the location. I felt that the staff wasn’t always very welcoming.

I loved this place! Great hotel for solo traveler/​couples. Only a 5 minute walk from Miami Beach and 5 minutes or less from dozens of restaurants. Super clean rooms, hospitable staff, comfy beds, and great showers. Definitely will stay again on my next Miami trip.

LOUD but a lovely stay in the heart of South Beach.
This is a, for the most part, post renovation review. My room and building were fairly newly renovated. The room was small yet had everything I needed. Super clean and tastefully updated. I LOVED the village setup. It really made it feel like you were staying local in another country with tons of restaurants and the pedestrian only stroll to the 500 building I was stayin. I did a last minute booking so I found it to be good value for what I paid. Finding a South Beach hotel that is clean and affordable can be a challenge but this one is definitely that from my experience. The continental breakfast was a nice touch too although it was certainly nothing to get too excited over.
The only thing that really stood out as bad about the hotel was the noise. The restaurants below are loud all day and night. I am not a light sleeper at all and even I broke down and bought ear plugs. Of course some noise is to be expected on a weekend in Miami Beach but this was much louder than many of the other smaller hotels I’ve stayed in due to the lively action so close by. They really should just hand them out at check in because there is no way you could comfortably sleep through the amount of noise constantly going on.
Definitely a win for me and will look to Clay Hotel on future visits.

We had no problems staying here. Yes the room is New York style cozy, but very clean and cute. The little street it is on is so cute and trendy. Will definitely return. If you’re overweight though, you actually might not fit in the bathroom as the door swings awkwardly in.

My stay at the Clay Hotel (November 12 — November 15,2015) was more like 3.75 stars than four stars. It was my first time visiting Miami and I was looking for an affordable, clean hotel in South Beach. Everyone at my job was telling me I shouldn’t go the boutique hotel route; that I should instead look for a well-​known brand because the more established hotels would be better since they have a reputation to uphold. But the big name hotels in South Beach charged more than I was willing to spend.
I found out about The Clay Hotel on
. Not only did I like the photos of it but it was also on Washington Avenue and within walking distance of the Fillmore/​Jackie Gleason Theater. Why was this important to me? Well, I had tickets to the Chucho Valdes concert at the Fillmore on November 14. And when I saw that the cost on priceline was $ 107 a night for a standard room, I was sold. You mean to tell me I’m going to stay on South Beach, near the Fillmore, right beside Espanola Way, within a few blocks of the beach for a total of $ 388.83 (including taxes and hotel fees)? Hell yeah, I was booking the Clay!
Before I arrived, I was looking for there to be some kind of catch. This deal seemed too good to be true. There must be something wrong. I’d read somewhere that the workers at the Clay spoke English as a second or third language and there may be a language barrier. But the two attractive young women at the front desk upon my arrival (a Latina and a girl who looked Asian) greeted me with a smile… and spoke clearer English than myself. My room was ready even though I arrived around noon and check-​in time was supposed to be 3pm. The lobby looked just like the photos, only with darker lighting.
I was staying in Room 358 and was told to go out the door, turn left and walk down Espanola Way to my building. This part was the most confusing part of my stay. Espanola Way was busy and the restaurants and hotel rooms are all pink. I had trouble finding my building because it wasn’t labeled. I walked back to the lobby and they let one of their workers escort me to my building. I would never have guessed that it was my building because the stairway leading up to it, though sturdy, was old and some of the paint was peeling. This and the hallway I walked down were the main hints of the Clay Hotel’s antiquity.
My room was very nice and smelled fresh. It was small but clean (including the restroom) and the bed was comfortable. There was an ironing board, an iron, a microwave and a little refrigerator. The tv had about 20 stations (including ESPN, HBO, and the Cartoon Network). Also, when eating at some of the restaurants on Espanola Way, you get a 15% discount on your meals when you show them your room key. Staying at the Clay has its advantages.
Here are a few mild issues I had with my stay:
1) There was no peephole on my door
2) Housekeeping didn’t replace the towels and soap. In all fairness, there were enough towels in the restroom to last me 3 days. There was only one bar of soap but when I’m at home I use the same bar of soap daily until it rinses away anyway.
3) I used their computer room (located in the same building as the lobby) twice. Once at day and another time at night. It was fine in the daytime but when I went to the kiosk at night the room was dark except for the glow of the computer and a little light coming in from the hallway. I couldn’t locate the light switch so I used the computer in the dark, feeling like a teenager trying to look at something naughty in my parent’s basement when all I was trying to do was print airline tickets for my return flight home. There’s only one computer and printer but I do appreciate them having a computer room.
Other than those few minor issues, I enjoyed my stay. Other reviews I’ve read complained about street noise but I didn’t hear much of that from my room even though the Espanola Way shoppes were crowded every day. It was only noisy when I got outside because some of the restaurants have patios where customers can sit, drink, eat and socialize. It was a safe environment and not unruly at all. Tame for South Beach.
The Clay Hotel is charming, has its own style and has heart. If you’re looking for an inexpensive, clean room in a convenient SoBe location then this is the spot. Besides the other conveniences I mentioned previously, it’s also near plenty of nightclubs, souvenir shops, Lincoln Road Mall, and there is an American Apparel store right across the street. The Clay doesn’t have its own taxi stand or airport shuttle, so I called Super Shuttle to pick me up from the hotel lobby and take me to the airport after checking out (it costs $ 20).
I enjoyed my stay at The Clay and would consider staying there again next time. How much did I enjoy it? I didn’t want to wash the hotel’s unique smell from my clothes when I got home. A comfortable, convenient hotel in a village setting.

My trip to south beach was unplanned. I kept it budget friendly. I researched this hotel and for the price $$ i was impressed. It was very clean!!! top priority for me is cleanliness. The only complaint I have,(is that our tv signal was totally snowy.
You got a bad picture. Since we were In South beach, we really didn’t care. The beach was literally 2 blocks away!!!
Friendly staff and walking distance to the nightlife. I will return to the clay if they stay clean.

I stayed there 3 nights. It was my 1^st time ever renting a hotel & traveling to South Beach. I was nervous on my stay here b/​c of some of the reviews especially since it’s my 1^st hotel stay ever. I got a king size bed with balcony view room. The rooms are divided into separate buildings all within Espanola Way so be aware about that. It’s not a spacious room but everything was nice, clean & they seem updated. Our beds where made & bathroom restocked everyday. This hotel is perfect for the people that doesn’t mind the noise especially going on until 3am. If you are looking for a good night’s sleep I def wouldn’t recommend this hotel or you could take ear plugs & then it would solve the problem. Other than the noise I have zero complaints & for the price & the closeness to everything I will def stay here again.

We stayed 4 nights at the Clay. The location is perfect and the price is compared to other hotels great. The room was small but we did not care as we were outside all the time. We stayed in the last building of Espanola way, so it was very quiet which we appreciated. The loudest part was the air conditioning. The breakfast was in the same building. The boxes you get reminded me to a youth hostel breakfast. But it was ok.
Our safe was not working in the beginning, but one of the staff members repaired it immediately. All other questions were answered nicely and informative, too.
I would definitely come back and also recommend this place to friends.

Great spot. As another poster noted, the room is a bit small but who cares if you are at Miami Beach. go walk around and talk to people! there’s a bed and a bathroom there later when you need it.
Staff at the front desk and throughout the building were super cool and nice. Unilocalers complaining that they had to go to another building for their room need to grow a pair… it’s not even a half a city block to the «farthest» building, which i ended up in. super easy.
cost me $ 195 for the queen room after taxes and such. check in is 3pm and check out is 11am. $ 12/​hour for late check-​out up to 3pm when you get charged another day.
There are more bars and restaurants on this little block than you can handle in a day or two. Only two blocks from the ocean.
Would love to visit again if I find myself in south Florida any time. Would def recommend the Clay Hotel as a crash spot for anyone heading this way. Wish I came over for WMC but i’m dumb and make poor decisions and visit a month late. Oh well.
ps. i found a parking garage at Lincoln/​Pennsylvania. it’s called the 17^th Street garage. only $ 20 for 24 hour parking. 8 minute walk to the hotel. the Clay Hotel offers valet parking but i’d rather have my car in a garage than on the street somewhere. just my $ 0.02.

I stayed at the Clay Hotel last weekend and I loved it. This was the first time I booked a hotel on my own, and I’m glad it turned out great. If you ever stay in South Beach and you want a place to stay that’s cheap and clean, this is the place.
I spent less than $ 300 for two nights and valet parking. It was $ 116 a night for a queen bed ‚$ 8/​night resort fee and $ 19/​day for valet. They charged $ 116 when I booked the hotel and then when I got there they charged the rest: $ 116 for the second night, $ 16 resort fee and $ 38 valet.
The person at the front desk was kind and explained everything well. The hotel consists of 4 buildings next to each other. For each building entrance there’s a gate that requires your hotel key, which made me feel safe.
The actual room itself was a good size for two people. It was very clean and bug free. It had a safe, a mini fridge with two free water bottles, a Keurig with free coffee, and a microwave. The bathroom was small but the shower has good water pressure and hot water. The bed and pillows wasn’t that soft but I still slept good. I could hear music playing at night and in the morning. But I didn’t mind it at all because it wasn’t too loud where I couldn’t sleep. My favorite part of the room was the balcony which overlooks Espanola way.
I loved how the hotel is located on Esapanola way. I don’t know how to explain it but it seemed magical. It must be the Italian string lighting and the romantic restaurants lining the street.
I also loved how the hotel was located in the middle of everything there is to see in SoBe. The hotel is right across from American Apparel. Its about 5 minute walk to the beach and 5 minute walk from Lincoln Road Mall. There’s so many places to shop and eat.
There’s also vouchers for free breakfast, DO NOT SKIP OUT ON BREAKFAST. It’s located in this nice restaurant down the street, Fez. I had scrambled eggs, toast, fries and bacon with orange juice.
I really enjoyed staying at this hotel and I plan on staying here again if I ever go back to Miami.

L’hôtel est IDÉALEMENT situé. Tout est à portée de main, les resto, la plage…
Les chambres sont refaites, c’est joli et c’est propre. En plus, pour les chambres de 4, elles sont divisées en 2 parties.
Après, pour ce qui est du bruit… On né peut pas tout avoir, être au cœur de Miami beach, et être au calme! Mais c’est largement supportable.
Le personnel est correct.

Hotel bien situé dans Miami beach, mais rue extrêmement bruyante avec beaucoup de restaurants et bars sous l’hôtel.
Accueil plutôt froid et distant. Possibilité de parking pour 20 $ par jour.
L’hôtel est en cours de rénovation, mais nous avons eu le droit d’avoir une chambre dans l’ancienne partie. Dés notre arrivée nous constatons une invasion de cafards dans la chambre, la salle de bain et le couloir !!! Notre chambre étant située juste au dessus des cuisines d’un restaurant. La literie laisse à désirer et les draps né sont pas repassés. Etat de la moquette au sol lamentable (sale et déchirée). La salle de bain en assez mauvais état. Climatisation bruyante et aucun équipement particulier dans la chambre. Très mauvaise insonorisation !!! Entretien quotidien des chambres mauvais.
Pas de petit déjeuner compris.
