The Cape Cod Room

Wow — I have completely forgotten all about this place, which was originally recommended to me by a colleague, who normally has her food tips spot on. Not the case this time.
We showed up sometime in the spring and what a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT! First of all, as soon as we walked in — we noticed two very annoying and uncomfortable things, one the AC was broken and two the sound level of the room was obnoxious, even though it was half empty. Not a great way to start off the evening. However, we are optimistic and began looking over the menu, all in all a good variety of seafood classics, hence the name Cape Cod Room, you would mostly expect the menu to consist of New England fare, such as clams, mussels, lobster bisque etc. Upon browsing the menu, our server came over to take our drink order, which took way too long to bring to the table, but nonetheless… we just decided it was an off night and gave them the benefit of the doubt.
Now comes the ordering of the food. Now, I am normally very sympathetic to servers as my bf owns a rest., but that night… I really believe our server was stoned or just very slow. He got our order wrong several times and even brought out the wrong appetizer, mussels instead of steamers, which were awful; the worst steamers of my life. It was just slow and very choppy service and when you are trying to make a name for yourself, obviously consistency in service is key. The steamers were full of sand and grit and absolutely zero flavor and as a kid growing up on the vineyard for the summer, I know what a steamer is supposed to taste like. Proceeding our disappointing appetizer’s I had the bisque — which was way too creamy and there was no chunks of lobster meat, I had the lobster mac n cheese. Honestly, not that bad… but the ration of cheese to lobster was obviously 5 – 1 and overall, had a very fishy and sort of unpleasant after taste.
I am sorry Cape Cod Room, but you have a lot of improvements to make before I would ever come back! Also, if you are a true love of proper New England fare, then I recommend skipping out on this one. You may also leave a little disappointed!

As I walked into Cape Cod I was beside myself with the décor but unfortunately the ac was broken that day (just my luck lol). Wow, I just showered, got all dolled up and I started sweating. Me & my cousins were not very happy but we were gonna stick it out. We were seated promptly since there were only 2 other parties there. Strange for a friday evening. Anyway, our great waiter Kevin made the time worthwhile with his attentiveness & sweet nature. We ordered drinks, 2 reislings & a mixed drink. To our surprise Kevin informed us that they ran out of the ingredient for the mixed drink & he showed us the last bit of reisling that was left. Bummer bc I was looking forward to that wine since it was so hot. He gave us that last bit of wine that was left which was a tease. But I guess something is better than nothing. We weren’t expecting to get comp’d for that but the bartender gave us a free round– brownie points!!! He made us raspberry mojitos which were refreshing & sweet but it packed a punch. After the alcohol I felt like I needed to take another shower but luckily they opened up some doors to allow for some air. They should of had those open all day.
Ok so on to the food.(I hate doing these long reviews but I don’t want to miss anything). We all ordered a salad because it was too hot to try the bisque. After ordering we get another surprise. Kevin apologized to us again for earlier & gave us an order of conch fritters… it was real nice of them to do that. They tasted great. The salad was good too. nothing out of this world but it had apples, cranberries, shaved cucumbers & feta cheese. Main course was chicken pot pie. It was yummy as well & a big portion I might add. For dessert I had shortbread w/​lime pudding. The pudding was tart. I love tart. but the shortbread wasn’t soft enough. Before departing Kevin told valet to have our cars ready out front so we wouldnt have to wait (more brownie points). We paid, went to the restroom before leaving & right before we walked out the manager gave us a tour of the ‘Judge’s Loggia’, the party room & the ballroom. Told us it was built in 1926, etc. very nice man. I’d be nice to have a wedding there.
Overall, the service was great and the food was exceptional but I wouldn’t return because the original prices for entrees are not cheap in my opinion. I don’t mind paying top dollar for food but it has to blow me away. The only reason I went was to take advantage of the Unilocal menu at the fixed price.

drove all the way from Coconut Grove to check out all the buzz about this new Lyon restaurant. loved the name as Cape Cod is a favorite haunt from years ago, one of the most beautiful spots on earth that I’ve ever been. no secret there. checked Unilocal on the way, and I am glad I did. because of the complaints about the valet parking, we drove to the public lot (which was free last night! I like free!) and walked along the trail behind condo alley. what a beautiful night. the sunset was spectacular with a full moon peeking out from the clouds. without Unilocal,we would have missed an amazing sunset walk on the ocean. arriving at the restaurant, we made the mistake of going to the wrong entrance, I had not read Felicia’s review, yet. when we did make it to the proper entrance, the friendliest valet greeted us!
many of the reviews mention the beauty of the Bath Club, and I completely agree. the historic rooms with beautiful terrazzo floors and wood ceilings, hark to an earlier era of understated elegance. the addition of the modern décor in the historic room is stunning. there were only two other parties when we arrived, so noise was not an issue and the service was attentive and excellent. I joked to the waiter, Kevin, about the lamp shades which I guess they changed due to the review written here. I was a little disappointed, I was really looking forward to seeing the «offensive?» lamp shades. Well, maybe, they’ll bring them back.
THE FOOD, as others have noted, the breads and corn muffins were amazing. could they pull off this kind of quality (in Miami) throughout the meal? we began with the steamers and chopped salad, both were delicious! I wanted to order the beet salad, well, next time. my dining companion ordered the soft-​shelled crab and I, the salmon. after a couple of minutes, the waiter came back with news that the crabs were not what the chef considered good enough to serve, well something to that extent. my companion was not happy but I assured him that a good chef will evaluate the food just before it is cooked. seafood, especially, does not keep long. many lesser chefs would have sent it out regardless but here, quality means something. I, personally, think that restaurants should run out of items. this reduces waste and increases the freshness of the food. beware the restaurants with huge menus that never run out of food. the walk-​in freezers are overflowing with frozen entrees!
I digress. the salmon was quite good and my partner raved about the lobster pot pie. he gave me a taste, but I don’t always like to mix tastes in the middle of the meal. Lord, I am turning into my father the older I get! I will try the lobster pot pie and the beet salad next time and there will definitely be a next time! we discussed bringing my father and step mother for brunch on Sunday! we passed on dessert, we were way too full. I am sure dessert is all it was said to be.
the service was incredible. Kevin, as other reviewers wrote, was a delight and the manager, Juan, was gracious and showed us around the club a bit. oh, it pays to eat out during the week when the weekend crowds are home. the Cape Cod room was well worth the drive from Coconut Grove. not bad considering how much further the real Cape Cod is. I may put the poor valet out of work, but drive the three blocks to the public lot and walk along the ocean. it made a huge difference for this diner.

Great food. Excellent service. The wine list was great. This is a nice place for a private, intimate dinner. One of our favorites restaurants on the beach.

The beautiful entrance is easy to miss so you will probably end up pulling into the modern condo next door. But, no problem, security is accustom to this and will call the valet over to come and get your car.
The restaurant is lovely and being in the the original bath club is maybe the best part of being there with its beautiful courtyard and antique filled rooms. The modern dining room that houses the restaurant was very well designed and decorated with soothing blue tones that meld modern with antique seamlessly.
The staff is very friendly, maybe even too friendly as our server interrupted our conversation on numerous occasions. Our server must have been new because they she was greatly challenged when asked what state the menu items were from (MA vs ME). But, for the most part the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and well attended to so they all get an «A» from me, even if the our server gets it only for effort.
All menu items come from the New England so don’t invite your Boston friends for dinner here when they are in town. Even the surprisingly decent wines are form Long Island (though not sure that counts as New England).
I liked the menu overall, it isn’t very long, but offers a good selection of modern and inventive takes on classic New England seafood favorites like clam chowder and lobster rolls. Many of the aforementioned classic dishes of New England have been reconstructed with varying degrees of success.
They serve very good onion bread and then inform you that fresh baked corn bread is in the oven for you. Unfortunately, I had to remind them about the corn bread as it had not arrived even after we had finished our appetizers. When the corn bread arrived it seemed that they had forgotten it in the oven as it was a bit crispy for my taste, but I suspect it would have been great had it come out on time. OK I know I tend to dwell on bread so I will move on.
I ordered the oyster and corn cake appetizer to start and there was so much salt I couldn’t taste anything but salt. Since I love salt it is very rare for me to find dishes too salty, but this was so salty I have to deduct a star from what certainly had all the makings of a 4-​star dinner. I also tried some of the jumbo shrimp cocktail that was fine, but expected. Next, I had scallops, which were tasty. The lobster roll and the lobster pot pie all received good reviews from my table, with a couple of complaints about the salad greens being slightly over salted (thought they would have ran out after my oysters!). For desert we had the brownie and the lemon curd tart and they were both fine. Overall, only the setting was anything to write home about (or Unilocal about as the case may be). But, I think this place has a lot of potential once it works out a few kinks in the kitchen so I would definitely give it another chance.

The Cape Cod Room is located in the Bath House. If you have not been you are missing out. I’m really surprised I have not been to more weddings, events, or parties here. The courtyard is truly beautiful! When we arrived I noticed the restaurant itself was not too large and quiet, so quiet I felt like whispering. The crowd was older. I’m talking older like grandma & grandpa crowd that enjoy going to fancy dinners on the weekends. Ok, it’s different than the usual Miami Beach thing but this is why I came to 59 street; the opposite direction from South Beach because I wanted something different.
We were seated in a booth-​like table. I noticed right away that the seating area was dirty and had crumbs everywhere. I brushed it off and sat as I looked at the restaurant. It is nicely decorated and overlooked a pool. Yea, a pool. The menu was similar to a one page flyer. Options are extremely limited. If you are a picky foodie this is not the place for you but if you wish to have the New England experience then you should at least check it out. We ordered the oysters to start off with and they were large and pretty fresh, not too fishy. I had the baby scallops and my dining partner ordered the salmon and requested to please have the skin removed. The scallops were alright; they were really small and lacked a va-​va-​voom reaction. The salmon was really good! If I return I will have that. We ended our meal with an apple-​pear cobbler a-​la-​mode. This was good as well. The service was excellent and that’s a good thing because if it wasn’t I would SURELY never return. All in all it was an average dining experience and it’s a toss up if I will come back.

First of all I love the bath club. I love how the entrance, courtyard and the ballroom always transport me to a happy place. It reminds me of what Miami must have been in its heyday. The Cape Cod Room is tastefully decorated and the menu reflects New England cuisine obviously. The food and even the desserts were wonderful. The lobster roll appetizer was out of this world. The oysters were fresh and sweet but the cocktail sauce lacked punch and needed more horseradish which they brought us willingly. The main courses did not disappoint. My lobster macaroni and cheese was amazing and a very large portion. The lobster pot pie smelled heavenly. Everyone at the table begged for a piece and he graciously gave all of us a piece. The crust was unbelievably buttery and crispy. The sauce was just perfection. As for dessert as cristina o mentioned the shortbread with lemon curd was the standout. The cookies were soft, buttery, and sweet which complemented the lemon curd so well.

went for sunday brunch. they start you off with warm from the oven scones as well as some muffins. the scones were ridiculously good, the muffins were good but not worth the calories. my papa had the square burger which must have been delicious b/​c that fancy man used his hands and yes, my father eats burgers with a fork and knife usually. my hubby had the mussels which must have been good b/​c all he offered was a tiny piece of bread w/​some of the sauce after all the mussels were gone. my lobster rolls were awesome. better than some of the ones i had in boston (does that come across as foodie sacrilege?) we ordered the bagel tower as an appetizer and it was really good. home made fish dips layered with home made gravlax… perfect sunday brunch starter. i will def. be returning to this spot!
indian pudding is def. worth having but best dessert was hands down the short bread with homemade lemon curd.
mixed drinks were good but the selection of whisky was seriously abysmal.

The Bath Club on Miami Beach (59^th St. and Collins Ave.) has long been a private, membership-​only establishment with its’ own intimate, members-​only restaurant. But starting November 1^st, the fully restored 1920s Mediterranean-​style clubhouse restaurant is open to the public. It will be known as The Cape Cod Room, operated by Ken Lyon, longtime caterer now best known as owner of Fratelli Lyon.
Upon the recommendation of friends, we went this Saturday and love the place. Amazing seafood and the place is really pretty. Started out with shrimp cocktail, heirloom tomatotes, and clam chowder. Entres of Lobster mac-​n-​cheese and a seafood stew that was incredible. Really nice inexpensive wines for the time being but full bar. Place needs to liven up a bit including music, but it was a good first run and can only expect better things to come.
p. s. the service was much better than Ken Lyon’s italian restaurant in the design district.
