History

Established in 1998.

14 years in front of the Eden Roc Marina in Miami Beach, Now in North Bay Village opening our doors to a New Water Sports Center, where you will Find It All In One Place.

The idea begun the summer of 1998. Capt Joe thought to himself

«…other people must enjoy boating as much as I do». He created a small sign that said «Lets go sailing» and hung it on his sail boat docked at the Eden Roc Marina. That same day he got his first customer from a hotel down the street and Captain Joe’s Boat Rentals became reality.

Joaquin, Captain Joe, developed a passion for boating the first time his father took him to Bayside Market Marina back in 1963 at the age of 5.

He immediately felt an attraction and curiosity to boats and the lifestyle. And from that moment he dreamed of having a boat and spending his time at sea.

Key Biscayne Park and the Keys became his playground… And never missed a Boat Show Event!

At 14, he bought his first boat… Huge accomplishment for a boy his age.

And his dreams grew, wishing and planning one day he would sail the Bahamas, cruising thru undiscovered islands and that maybe one day he would get his own Yacht.

In 1998 all of this came true with the creation of Captain Joe’s Boat Rentals, Tours & Charters, Inc.

We had such a great time people at the desk and the captain was so nice they explain exactly how is going to work. Oh and the price was good. They are very concerned about our safety. Trustful companie I will be back for sure.

We arrived there at 5:30 when they say they close at dark which in May is at least 7:30 (and even the sign out front says they close at 6:30) but they refused to rent to us because they said, and I quote «never come this late to rent a kayak». The older guy who I believe is the owner actually repeated that twice. I feel they was a very rude way to handle it and I believe they just wanted to close early because it was a Friday. He also probably feels like kayaks are not expensive enough of a rental to actually not close early for. I’m not sure why else he would have emphasized kayak. But in any case it’s terrible customer service. Someone else also told me that same guy was very rude.

I took my parents and three young boys (ages 6, 8, 10) out for 2 hours on a 27 foot Hurricane and had a fantastic time! The boat was exactly as advertised and was in great shape with great speakers as an added bonus. The trip was my kids’ highlight of our Miami Beach vacation.
We asked for a captain to guide us and we were assigned to Captain Charlie. Captain Charlie was AWESOME! He’s a young guy, super cool and friendly, and got along really well with my kids. He brought along a cooler for our drinks and for no extra charge, brought a huge tube so my kids could go tubing while attached to the back of the boat. My kids absolutely loved this and begged to do it twice but time didn’t allow it. Charlie also drove us to a really cool sandbar, dropped anchor, and my kids and I were able to jump off the boat and swim around for a bit in a large area where we could stand.
All in all, we had a great experience here and I highly recommend it for anyone with young children. I did get an additional charge for gas and taxes for $ 100 which I was not expecting (probably buried in the fine print) but that is really the only negative thing I’d have to say. Also– bring cash to pay for the captain, I almost missed that.

If there was a way to give negative stars, I would! This place is a scam and the guy shouldn’t be operating a business that has to do with humans (or animals). The boats are a 2 out of 5 star condition at best, some look like they were towed off Gilligan’s Island and restored. BEWARE OF BEING OVERCHARGED ON FUEL PRICES. YOU WILL END UP PAYING MORE FOR YOUR BOAT RENTAL (s) THAN YOU EVER EXPECTED.
We got hoaxed into a membership because it actually made financial sense, but as the saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Once this guy has you committed and has your money, good luck getting a boat you want, especially on weekends/​holidays. He puts his members on the «B-​List» and resells all the better options to new tourists after he has your money. And good luck reasoning with this man, he’s like a baby brain stuck in a 60 year old body. I should have read more reviews before going to this place, I would have never committed. I know it didn’t just happen to me or the others that wrote bad reviews, I stood at the check in counter and watched him give a hard time to a brand new member about taking a boat out for a whole day even after the guy confirmed a reservation. He was told that boats cannot be reserved for a whole day. But that is not how he sells you on his BS membership (s). He tries to bully and intimidate people, and it works on most I suppose, but this dude needs to be put in his place and out of business. Even his own staff seemed scared of him and disgusted of how he treats people and customers.
There are way better places with far less head ache around Miami and North Miami that will actually appreciate your business.

My experience with Joe was horrible, he is nothing but a con artist, we paid upfront for a year (24 hours of boat rides) for almost $ 2,000. When we originally paid Captain Joe, he said that unless it was a holiday he would always have a specific boat (hurricane) available, we called a week in advance to make sure he would have it ready, but when we got there, the boat was not ready, as a matter of fact he tried to up-​sell us to another huge boat that would consume more gas and require a captain which costs a lot more and was not included in any original package because Captain’s are paid at the time of the rental.
What he does is give all the boats to the new customers and the returning customers that already paid for the hours in advance get stiffed, I mean why should he care right? He already collected the money. Typical low class con artist.
Captain Joe just kept arguing and pushing the other big boat on us, when we asked for our money back he refused and said that we would have to go to court to get that back, so now there has a been a dispute filed with the credit card company because Captain Joe thinks he’s slick.
Bottom line, do not buy any packages, do not pay in advance for anything, and if you really want to avoid any type of stress just go somewhere else, this business is a small little unorganized business run by a con artist with a huge attitude problem.

Good boat, great rate, but they held a $ 1,000 deposit which took over a week to be released back to my card. I had my bank, Suntrust, back and forth with the owner, Capt. Joe, who was extremely rude and agitated that we were bothering him about when my $ 1,000 deposit would be released and proved extremely unhelpful. He was calling the bank rep bad names (this was a supervisor from corporate suntrust) as she tried to help me and explain to him that the merchant has a «deposit Release» code that they can trigger to release the deposit… Capt. Joe refused to listen to her and put ALL blame on the «stupid» banks. otherwise, your bank will release them after 6 – 14 days (or whenever they realize you are not being charged that money) so this boat rental company does NOTHING to expedite your deposit back. Very much a pain. Not sure I would return.

We had an awesome experience at Captain Joe’s. Rented a 20 ft boat for two hours using the Unilocal $ 155 for $ 210 deal. I decided to go it alone without a captain in board, Francesca was very helpful in teaching me the basic boat driving skills. The two hour ride around the bay was the highlight of our Miami vacation. While docking upon return, I accidentally hit one of those wooden poles at the marina, the impact left several visible extensive scratches and blemishes on the boat. According to the rental agreement I would’ve been liable to pay for the damages and as per the employees at the dock the boat needed a new paint job in this case. Captain Joe came out to inspect and assess the situation and in a bout of extreme generosity decided not to charge me anything at all for the damages! I was pleasantly shocked and surprised and for that I’m very grateful. Will definitely return next time we’re visiting Miami.

Super experience!
Having grown up boating on Biscayne Bay, my return to the helm after forty years away was an emotional experience. It was also my wife’s first South Florida boating experience.
The wonderful crew at Captain Joe’s accorded the occasion the importance which it deserved and were incredibly friendly, helpful, and supportive.
I had forgotten just how glorious Miami and Miami Beach are from the water. Thank you, Captain Joe’s, for allowing us to (re)discover the wonder!

When I think of Miami, I think of big yachts and basketball players hosting yacht parties! Or maybe I’ve been watching too many tv shows like «ballers»… Anyway, this is the closest to my fantasy. You get to rent a boat of your choice (and within your budget) and they give you a nice cruising tour of Miami! I’m really really really happy we ended up getting captain Julio as our guide! We were originally gonna get an older captain (whom look like he was hungover) but last minute they decided to assign captain Julio with us and boy did we get lucky! He’s super young! But very smart, and very funny! Really made the trip delightful! We got the Unilocal deal so you should def try to redeem it. Got to see the nice houses, downtown, and other little islands around Miami. The breeze and the view is amazing. Total Instagram worthy pictures…#boatlife

After checking Unilocal to confirm the opening time, we arrived at 9am to be told that they didn’t open till 10am. When asked why they would advertise 9am they just kept insisting they don’t help customers until 10. 4 feet away from this debate was a huge sign that says opens at 9. In addition to this they only had one jet-​ski and the attendant was non committal about when we could use it as he didn’t know when he could pick it up given someone needed to man the desk and he was by himself. They lost my business after hearing this. Shame on me as this is the second time I’ve tried to use them. The first time they advertised a Unilocal special for $ 69 dollars for one hour on a jet ski — my session total came to $ 100+ with a number of hidden fees. Really unprofessional setup.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY PEOPLE. He doesn’t even deserve 1 Star. He treats costumers like animas like him. This JOE guy is a hysteric sick person. Costumer service is 0 here. The brazilian lady and the black guy that work for him there nice but this guy should close this business and take some anger management classes and learn how to talk to people and give them service, especially when 85% of his business comes from Unilocal. Don’t even waste your time and money going there. He never offers you any maps and stuff. All he offers is his captain to charge you extra. This is a swapmit bazaar business from the street. You pay $ 250 with all the Unilocal specials and stuff for nothing. Mr joe learn how to deal with people and then try to run a business.

Do not join captain Joes membership! Membership does not have it’s privileges! He never has boats available– as a member, we would reserve a boat, show up and it wouldn’t be there. This happened on several occasions. Even though we paid monthly, he will always give the boats to the tourists before members.

The most crooked man ever. Do not book a charter with him ever! He told us we would be going out at 1 pm as soon as the captain would arrive. Another group came and captain joe told them that if they book he more expensive boat he would give them the captain. The captain showed up and he gave them the captain first. He didn’t have a captain for us this is after we paid in full!!!

The worst experience ever. Rented a 25 foot boat for 8 hours. Price? On paper — $ 480 plus gas. In reality? $ 480 plus $ 50 per hour. How come? What they DON’T tell you when they rent, but when you return, is that their gas charge is $ 50 per hour. Wouldn’t it make sense to just read the gas gauge you ask? Of course! But on their boats’ gas tank was completely off; not working. Oh, and the boat never started properly. It took us 45 minutes to start it once. All-​in-​all, if you want to rent a boat in Miami, there lots of places. Don’t go here. They aren’t upfront and, aside from Joe, they are utter jerks with no customer service skills. We live in Miami Beach and will be renting elsewhere!

Awesome boat tour! We went for a 2-​hour private boat tour today around Miami. You can just rent a boat if you know how to drive one, but we hired a captain to drive us. You can also learn some basic driving skills if you hire a captain. We went all the way from north miami to south miami in two hours, and surprisingly it wasn’t too hot on the water (even though it’s August). The view was fantastic. You can also see some celebrity residents if you’re into that stuff.
A few tips, I guess: if you don’t go on the water very often and if you have a small party (there were 2 of us), 2 hours gives you just about the right amount of time to see enough of Miami and experience the water. If you have a few more friends, then I recommend getting a couple more hours and go to the ocean! Bring some drink, but don’t bring hats.
Overall, fantastic experience! I think it’s more worthwhile than the bigger ship tours. More so if there’re more of you.

Captain Joe’s is a fairly reasonable and laid back option if you want to rent a boat and cruise around the intercoastal water way on a sunny afternoon.
Located in a fairly non-​descript location, you need to hunt a little bit to find it, but once you’ll do you will see that they have a variety of motor boat options. I believe they also have sea kayaks and other water sport options too.
We went with a 19′ footer which was perfect for a few hour day cruise. Joe and his deckhand helped us become familiar with the boat and took us for a quick spin to learn the controls. After that we were on our own.
The intercoastal in Miami is a bit narrow so be careful with the other idiot and drunken boaters out there. Just stay between the red and the green.
If you are feeling more adventurous (and your depth finder works) you can go outside of the channel and check out some of the amazing houses that line the bay.
