When I was looking for a contractor to convert my steam heating system from oil to gas, I originally went to Joe. I knew he was a steam expert based on online research. His quote was higher though, and I decided to take my chances on someone else.
It was a mistake. I learned from this experience that although his quote may be higher, it’s for the materials/​labor to do the job correctly. If someone does it incorrectly, you’ll eventually be paying Joe to come fix it due to leaks and noise (as I did). There are very few steam heating experts left, but Joe is one of them.
I also really respect the way Thatcher does business. I had originally asked for some additional work, but Joe said it wasn’t necessary after examining the system, and took it off the bill. That’s customer service I can respect.

Fixed our boiler in the midwinter. Our 100 year old house had never really been warm, and they made it efficient, warm and toasty. Turns out it wasn’t just the boiler, it was a myriad of things prior plumbers had done to the pipes, the radiators. etc. My only complaint is the price was a lot, lot higher than others, but I suppose you get what you pay for.

Having a really bad experience with these guys right now. My co-​op board hired them to install new vents in the radiators. Not only do the pipes now leak and make loud noises but the installation guys damaged my ceiling, walls, and grate that encased one of the pipes.
Just genuinely sloppy work and total lack of professionalism from the installation guys they sent over. I’ve heard good things about Joe, but haven’t spoken to him or heard from him. I would definitely look elsewhere unless you feel like having loud leaky pipes and apartment torn up.

Thank you, Joe, for the pipe relocation work and the radiator/​boiler maintenance! All was fairly priced, efficient, and done with care. And we have confidence that still have life in our 50yo steam boiler!

Have a huge house circa1874 one of a line of houses which were owned by Standard Oil of NJ/​Esso executives for most of the last 100 years.
I really wanted to keep oil but at $ 3.94 a gallon we finally had it.
And I tell you God sent us the right guy.
You can not pay this guy (Joe) enough to put in an inefficient system. Its like this guys mission is to reduce fuel use on this earth. I have NEVER come across anyone that even hinted at taking on this responsibility.
He replaced the 20% over sized WM Steam Oil unit with two smaller boilers. the second to kick in on the coldest times. The piping is like art work which his partner Edison did much of. He replaced and added those huge expensive Gorton vents all over basement.10 or 11 of them. yeww! And now coming back every few weeks to clean boiler and change vents to balance the rooms upstairs. Plus. they personally installed the Stainless Steel Chimney liner, new thermostat, new gas line from meter and two Pressuretrol to make the system work on ounces of pressure. One of the best things we did hiring this guy Joe. A genuinely good person that you will have no difficulty dealing with.
When you get a price from this guy you are getting the full 4 courses. not just a replaced boiler (as every other quote I got). Use this guy and save money.
Our first full month (33 days) would have been at this temperature about $ 1460 with oil. it was $ 540 with the gas and his set up. And we are expecting this to be less as rooms get adjusted & boiler cleaned. and now only one boiler kicking in instead of the two.
This is a real heating man that understands old fashioned Steam.
I estimate that if I had gone with the other estimates and the single oversized unit proposed, my bill would be $ 670 – 780 this last month depending upon which unit went in. So there it is.
Oil was so expensive we had the thermostat at 60º full time with ele heater in our bedroom. Now we are going to be very ok :)
