Half Price Books Market East — Mesquite, Texas — Buy and sell new and used books, CDs, LPs, DVDs, comic books, textbooks, magazines, electronics, games, nostalgia, stationery and more!
I’m normally a huge fan of HPBs. I subscribe to their newsletter, buy lots of gift cards for gifts and have been to most of their DFW stores. Today I stopped by Mesquite and was disappointed. The bookstore is small, cramped and many of the sections had very limited selections. The diet and exercise section had tons of books, but science fiction, astrology and science was very limited. The biggest problem was the bathroom which was horrible. There was only one bathroom, it was tucked behind the buy counter area and it was no frills for sure. The toilet paper dispenser had literally fallen off the wall and was facing down on the floor. As if needing to use paper towels was yucky enough, there was no hot water. Eeewwww!!! That made me want to immediately leave. Yes, I’ll admit I’m a bit of a Sheldon Cooper germaphobe. Still, not having hot water seemed unsanitary to me since there was only one bathroom. Parking is more limited than other locations. Skip this Half Price and go to HPB at FireWheel or Rockwall. They are much better!!!

We spend plenty of money with HPB, especially on comics and kids books. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Great deals!

I understand that HPB isn’t always going to have everything I need, and I’m okay with that. However, my school tends to check with local book stores to get a quote on how many of a certain book they had, and then inform them that said book would be going on a summer reading list incase they want to purchase more. It’s a method that’s good for business, and good for students. You know what’s good for no one? The customer service in this place. I called this particular store in advance to ensure that they had a book I needed, and when they offered to hold it for me until I got there(some 15 minutes later) I agreed, giving them my name and number. I arrived as quickly as I could and upon informing the cashier that I had a book on hold, I was told there were no other copies. I was a bit confused, and they promised they would hold the book for me, and I didn’t take very long to get there. When I asked if she was absolutely sure there wasn’t at least one book left somewhere(as she hadn’t even bothered to check in any way), she immediately berated me for being an «unprepared, irresponsible, self-entitled brat». I immediately located the manager, who wasn’t standing far away at all and MUST have heard what his employee just said, and was promptly banned from the store for«starting a fight and threatening his employees». Needless to say I will NEVER return there again.

Always went here for my unusually off-the-wall required readings for high school. Prices were good and I couldn’t wait until the moment I went and sold everything back as I would never touch it again. Store is organized, staff are helpful and friendly. If you bring in an offer they do a decent job of giving you a quote in a reasonable amount of time.

Very helpful staff! When I couldn’t find what I was looking for, they did a search and ordered what I wanted from a location in Houston.

I was visiting the mesquite, tx store as I parking my car to bring books I saw two employees pitching books not a few they had a dumpster full of books. I went in the store and ask the manger why they were pitching the books. I was told they did not have room for them. I said you could give them to churches, homeless shelters, schools that need books, ect. His response was head office rules not his. The head office would not make money if they did that. or or rEcycle Group by yahoo to fine it just type in your city rEcycle in you search box.

Half Price Books is a place to recycle your books and get a little cash in the process — not a place to earn any serious money. The main problem with most of the locations, this one included, is that they are too small. I still go the main location near Central and Northwest Highway to do any serious shopping. But for a small branch location there is still a decent selection and it is kept tidy. I enjoy looking through the stacks of my favorite topics and being surprised by finding a great book. The buy area is completely overrun with stacks of incoming books, but it only took about 20 minutes to get an offer the last time I brought in about 60 books or so.

Went in this week after not going for years and it is much more organized than I remember. I was searching for one specific book that has been out quite a while, but is still pretty popular– so I figured they may have it. I quickly found my way to the«Sociology» section where I figured it be, and nope. I found the psychology section, the transportation, and finally the clearance section… and nope. No book :( I heard the customer service(?) desk turn people away due to lack of inventory… so I didn’t want to embarass myself by asking for help. This brings me to my main problem with HPB– the lack of inventory. I know it would be a major bitch to implement one, but I just hate browsing. I go in for one specific item, and I end up buying stuff just because it is cheap, and then never read it. While I was browsing and picking up books to buy simply because I like their cover and they’re dirt cheap, I spotted a couple of odd employees. One was blocking a pathway and breathing heavily and doing a great job at ignoring my exsistence… others were behind the counter ignoring people until they got close enough to prove they were paying customers. I don’t know… The store is easy to navigate, the employees were friendly when they saw me pull out money, and it’s in a prime location for me. I don’t know though… HPB just gives me a weird, we-don’t-give-a-damn vibe.

Ok-got to give credit where credit is due. Staff today was much nicer and more helpful than on previous visits. They took the time to try to help my sons find the books they were looking for and even suggested some other titles they might like. Store still seems more disorganized than other locations and it can be downright scary the leaning towers of books over at the purchase table when the place gets busy. Props also for putting some real music on the 1.00 markdown cart-I even found a pristine copy of Achtung Baby to replace my lost one. Score! After this visit I will definitely be back.

Had some time to kill before heading to DFW, so I stopped in here yesterday to get something to read on my flight. This is a pretty decent used bookstore with a fairly average selection. I got a good book, and a great old John Lee Hooker album for around $ 15. Hard to complain about that.

This was my 2nd trip to HPB. My first was the HPB located near Firewheel. I actually came here the day after my first trip. I had other items I needed to sell. I was told prices vary based on location, need, and what the store had, so I decided to see if this location could offer more for what I had. I walked in the store and had a hard time getting completely inside. As soon as I entered, I was blocked by carts of books, stacked to my height of 5’8. I saw the counter to sell books, so I began walking that way. An employee asked me if I needed to sell some books. I told him I did, but it didn’t look like he needed anymore. He said he would take a look anyway and see what he could offer. He took my name and phone number and told me to set my box on the counter. He said he will page me once he has finished my offer. I had my infant son with me on this day and had a hard time getting through the store. The isles were cramped and overcrowded. The store seemed very tiny and the signs were displayed in a way where you had to tilt your head and lean back to try to view them. No more then one person could fit down an isle at a time. So far, I was not impressed. I heard my name over the speaker and returned to the front. The gentleman working asked me where I purchased my books. He said most of them look new and many are from the same publishing company. I advised him that some had been purchased from garage sales, others from eBay and some from my parents. He looked at me in a funny way and paused. He told me to go look around and he would page me in a few minutes. I heard my name again and returned. He told me I had to provide a proof of purchase. I told him that I didn’t have one because who gives receipts at garage sales or from their parents. He told me that my transaction was suspicious and proceeded to accuse me of being a thief. I have never been so insulted or embarrassed in my life. Had I known I would be accused of being a criminal, I could have printed my eBay receipt or better yet, skipped this store all together. I was so embarrassed, I left without asking his name. I plan on writing a letter to HPB corporate office to describe my experience. I’m fortunate this was not my first trip to HPB, or else I wouldn’t be returning. However, not all stores are this awful and I will return to the Firewheel/Garland Store with all of my future business.

I came here for two reasons. 1) Get gas money. 2)Purchase Scott McClellan’s: «What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington’s Culture of Deception» To make a long story short, neither one of these things took place. After 10 years of off and on college, I decided that the overpriced text books from the prior years did me no good being transported from storage room to storage room. Then a light came on, I could sell these books to Half Price Books. After three trips to the car, carrying about 20 textbooks and probably 15 other unwanted books into the store, I was told to put my name on the list and I’d be called when she was ready. Somehow I got sucked into reading«Hillary Rodham Clinton: What Every American Should Know.», an anti-Hillary Clinton book. As soon as I was about to get into the whole Monica Lewinsky affair, my name was blurted out over the loud speaker. Reluctantly I approached the counter, and was quoted with a sell price of a whopping $ 10. Ten dollars for 35 some odd books! Years of accumulation, textbooks that cost over $ 80 or $ 90 each. The girl told me that they have no use for outdated textbooks. Which makes sense, I guess. In the end I packed all the items back into my trunk. Went to the front counter and was told that Scott McClellan’s book doesn’t come out for another week. Great. I’m giving this store four stars, because they do have great discounts on fairly new books. They have a small but comfortable sitting area to read, and the majority of their books are gently used. If you’re living on a budget like me, then come here first before Barnes and Noble.
