I’ve been going to Toby’s(Toby Johnson) Barbershop here in Mesa for about a year and a half. Each time I drop in for a haircut, AND, if there aren’t too many customers waiting in line, I’ll have Toby work on me. Every time without fail, she does a great job! I enjoy trying new things, but when it comes to my haircuts, I prefer to have the hair on the back tapered and not boxed. I’ve found that many non traditional barbers(no disrespect intended, many do a descent job overall) aren’t very experienced tapering and will charge a few dollars more. After cutting my hair, upon request, Toby will also shave the back of my neck and sideburns. Again, more and more barbers or stylists are moving away from this service, but I’m glad that she still offers this. It leaves me with a good, cleaned up appearance. For the times that Toby isn’t available, she has several other barber colleagues in her shop that are very experienced and I’ve been very satisfied with their work as well. Toby’s Barbershop is located in a small strip mall(a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu studio in that mall can be seen from the road along with a golf cart store right across the parking lot.) right off McKellips Rd, just East of the Alta Mesa Dr./N. 56thST Intersection. The cost of a haircut at Toby’s is $ 14. Inside the barbershop there are 4 adult benches and one or two small benches for those customers that bring in the occasional tyke. Also, for those who don’t bring their books, Kindles, or use their smart phones, there are the usual sports and outdoor mags, along with a paper or two to read while waiting. During the Fall and Winter when our snowbird friends are here, the barbershop is always crowded and you’ll have a short to medium wait(count on a longer wait if you’re going to visit Toby). However, Toby and her two barbers move their customers through at a good pace, but don’t make their customers feel rushed which takes skill and is appreciated. As I’ve never called Toby’s before, I’m not sure if they take appointments. For those interested in appointments, you may want to call and check to see if they offer them. During the late Spring and all Summer, the wait is usually not very long at all and you can grab a haircut pronto. Their normal year round hours are from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday and from 8 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. All in all, an enjoyable barbershop experience awaits those who still prefer their hair cut by a traditional barber. Hook ‘Em!
