Great service! Great with kids too! Dr Chen was genuinely concerned with our vision and eye health besides being totally kind and friendly. We’ll DEFINITELY be back!!!

I have been going to Dr. Chen for over 4 years now. Great person and eye specialist. There have been some bad reviews about phone calls — You can always schedule appointment online. Take a chill and get your eyes checked by Dr. Chen! And munch on a hot dog afterwards in Costco.

Can I just start by saying my rating is only based on the simple fact that no one ever seems to answer the phone there. I have been calling for days to try and get my prescription to order new glasses and nothing.
I love going there because Dr. Chen has always gotten my prescription right and he’s a great doctor but the girls who work there can sometimes be rude and make you feel unwanted.
Not really sure why they never answer but it sure would be nice if they did. :/

Had no issues in getting my prescription (Rx) and glasses here (inside the Merced Costco) a year ago. But now, just a year later while trying to purchase a new pair of glasses I was told that Dr. Chen’s office wouldn’t release my information because my Rx had already expired.
I’ve worn glasses and contacts for a long time now and I’ve always been under the impression that an Rx for contacts expires after a year, while an Rx for glasses expires after two years. I called up their office (to try to figure out why this wasn’t the case this time around) and was told that Dr. Chen wrote me a one year Rx because it was my first time seeing him. I tried explaining that it was my first time there because I WAS a student living there temporarily, but the receptionist responded with, «Oh, you’re a student at the UC? We have an opening this afternoon if you would like to come in for an exam…»
For UC students with the UC insurance plan: Dr. Chen is considered out of network and you can save $ 30 on your exam if you go somewhere else, there are many options around town.

I highly recommend dr Chen (inside Costco) he’s friendly and so is his staff. Will take the time to explain and answer any questions. I went to him in January and barely got around to writing a review but he deserves a good review!

Dr. Chen is extremely precise. He is courteous and knowledgable. His recommendations have been spot on. He has helped me understand the changes with my vision and how to adapt quickly to those changes. Best thing is that he is extremely affordable.

A smart doctor
I wear Ortho-​K lenses, but I needed a new pair of glasses. Problem is, when I’m not wearing my lenses, my vision degenerates by the hour, due to my myopia and astigmatism, which means my vision is not very stable.
However, Dr. Chen, even though he is not the original doctor to prescribe my lenses, was able to «estimate» a workable prescription for me, and they work great! I greatly appreciate my eyeglasses and use them often.
He also recommended changes to my eye-​health (switching to soft) which has been hard for me, but at least I’ve listened. I’m pretty stubborn, but if you get me to change my mind, that’s saying something.
I’ve since moved back to the Bay Area, and have gotten eye-​care at Palo Alto Medical Foundation, but that experience was sub-​par.

I would highly recommend Dr. Chen! He is literally the nicest doctor I know. He is very knowledgeable and was very patient with the many questions I had. He has gone to the top schools too!
Dr. Chen was able to see me the same day as a walk in without an appointment. His staff was very accommodating and nice to deal with too.
It’s so convenient that his office is right inside Costco. Their glasses and contacts are a great price and they also have a great selection.
