History

Established in 1985.

Established in 1985 Mendocino Chocolate Company started as a mail-​order business with just two Truffles: Mendocino Mama and Mendocino Macho. With growing demand and success, a retail shop was openend first in the Mendocino Village and later in Fort Bragg.

Flash forward 25 years and Mendocino Chocolate Company still has two retail shops and a mail-​order business, but now you can select up to 27 different Truffle flavors, 30+ kinds of Originals (Nuts/​Chews), 10 – 12 Fudge flavors, 2 – 6 Bundt Cake Flavors and an array of solid white, milk and dark solid chocolates. .. all still hand-​made and hand-​decorated.

Business Owner

Living on the Mendocino Coast was just a dream for us for so long, but it became home in 1996. Mendocino Chocolate Company came on the market in 2003 and it took but a few minutes to make the decision to buy the business and carry on the tradition.

Having been entrepreneurs our entire adult lives, the business aspect was easy enough to learn. However, working with the chocolate was part art, part science. As we learned more, we improved the quality of ingredients. Thanks to a great staff, we were able to maintain the beauty captured in each confection while keeping the small-​batch, hand-​made quality.

It’s been a fun and challenging business and we look forward to improving and growing Mendocino Chocolate Company for years to come!

Big store with lots of things to look at and not all are chocolate. I bought a large slab of dark chocolate almonds and it was pretty good. I still prefer the chocolate almond slab from Godiva. The salesclerk was very nice. Their chocolates are also available in Fort Bragg.

Their Turtles are amazing. Get the ones with sea salt and dark chocolate. You won’t regret it. My husband has some praline thing that he was in love with too. Highly recommend for a treat for yourself or for souvenirs.

3 days in Mendocino. 3 visits to this store. I wish I could have this place on my block in NY so I could go there every day. Probably a good job it is on the other side of he county because my waistline would take a significant beating!

Very glad to see the Mendocino Chocolate Company actually having an outlet in Mendocino now, who woulda thunk?
I had missed the opportunity to buy some gifts for my mom, sister and niece early on during my visit so I thought I’d duck in here to see if there was something I’d missed at the other store in Fort Bragg. Sure enough I did! Sitting there on the very top shelf of their impressive chocolate selections beamed a lunch box for a little girl.
This was not just any lunch box, it was an old school throwback tin lunch box with a traditional clasp but had more to it. The shape was almost kidney-​like or dog bone with shiny beads fashioned into purse handles (the clerk said it could double as both a purse and lunch box for a little girl). What sold me on it was none other than images of one of my niece’s favorite characters from one of her favorite movies, Frozen.
I couldn’t believe this find and a few other chocolate goodies I procured that I didn’t see at the other store. In all, I think I’ll stick with this store when visiting the area because I usually stay in the village anyway.

I stopped in here with my friend who wanted to buy some of their rocky road. I loved their animal-​shaped chocolates and candies but actually purchased a custom box of 8 truffles and a piece of pecan brittle. The woman working behind the counter was friendly and super helpful and arranged my truffle box beautifully, including red tissue paper sealed with a company sticker in gold emboss. It would have made a good gift!
It was just for my husband and myself though and we polished off the truffles pretty quickly. Individually I think she said they cost $ 2.75 or something, and my total for 8 plus the brittle piece came to around $ 24. Of the 8 truffles (all different) 7 had the same texture on the inside, smooth and light, almost like a flavored whipped nougat center. The caramel was traditional and was (as expected) chewy. The pecan brittle was also great. I would definitely come here again. I liked their assortment of treats that looked ready for gift-​giving.
The majority of the store was chocolates, truffles and Jelly Belly products, but they also had artisan rice krispie treats, sour candies, chocolate covered marshmallows and things like t-​shirts and hats for sale.

I like their chocolates and adore the store in Fort Bragg, but the Mendocino store location has the most unpleasant worker attending (or not) to the customers. He seemed irritated that we walked in, interrupting his silence, even more irritated when we asked to add a truffle to our order, and downright rude when we checked out. I will not be returning to this location, not worth it.

I’ve been a faithful customer of Mendocino Chocolate Company from the beginning, circa the late 70s or early 80s, as a resident of the area. I moved to Sacramento in the 90s and have visited Mendocino every year since then on vacation trips. Their confections are superb, and I just don’t understand the negative reviews in this Unilocal listing. There’s another Mendocino Chocolate Company Unilocal review section that contains reviews comparable to mine… in the superb category. I suggest visiting both sites, and then decide which one you wish to accept.
I spent 10 days in Mendocino this month, and purchased my usual fudge delicacies on my way home. Quality is consistent with my experience over the years.

Stopped by Mendocino Chocolate Company while on a long weekend up north & discovered the following:
Almond version of the Rocher Balls & it was pretty nasty. The light, airy chocolate filling was not to my taste
Their Dark Chocolate Caramel was downright tasty — lots of chewy caramel surrounded by a dark chocolate — niiiiice
Chili Truffle — another we did not care for at all. Hoping for a sweet chocolate w/​an after-​kick from the pepper — alas, this was a dark chocolate truffle filled w/​a whipped light chocolate mousse that had a weird meaty flavor to it. Can’t really put my finger on what was causing the chili flavor except to say it did not ring good w/​us
Toffee — light, tender yet crunchy & buttery, this toffee was nicely complimented by the milk chocolate coating & pecans. Might have been even better w/​a dark chocolate but the milk was good enough for me to say we’d get it again
So for 2 hits & 2 misses, have to say this place ranks an overall 3 stars. Not really a fan & not aching to come back but it was A-​OK

Great place to get yummy gifts when in Mendocino.
They have a wide selection of treats for those with a sweet tooth — chocolates, fudge, chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate lollipops shaped as various animals. Prices were reasonable (lots of the treats ranging between $ 1.50 — $ 5.00). They also accept credit/​debit with no minimum. The saleswoman was friendly.
TIP: Be sure to check out the samples on the counter. YUM :)

I wish I could give less than one star, because this place certainly didn’t even earn one.
My husband and I walked in and the worker there seemed to be annoyed that we interrupted his quiet time. I walked around a bit and waited for him to say something, anything. When I told him we were ready to order, his short and disinterested responses made me want to walk out the door, which i wish we had.
I settled on two pieces and left. The truffles looked nice. Pretty big, although the decorations on top looked a bit cheesy and outdated.
We got back to our hotel and I handed my husband his. As he took a bite he looked disgusted and he described his chocolate as tasting like cheese, definitely not what one looks for in a truffle.
I still wanted to try mine, in case his piece was a fluke. I bit in and the inside consistency looked as if the chocolate was made a month ago. I’m almost certain that chocolate was WAY past it’s expiration date. Otherwise, something went terribly wrong and the filling came out chalky. So I packed both half eaten pieces back into it’s bag and into the trash.
A waste of $ 6 and a terrible overall experience. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else, anywhere else but here.

Just take a step through their door and you’ll realize this is a quality chocolate shop. There wasn’t a single thing bought that wasn’t delicious (and we ordered 5 – 6 different pieces, from white chocolate raspberry bars to bite-​size milk chocolate circles). When back in Mendocino, I’ll be sure to stop by to give myself another treat!

This is a very small little charming little chocolate shop. There are display shelves to the left when you come in. Nothing really to look at there… have candies like jelly bellys there.
While the chocolate is good the service here is so-​so. The lady helping seemed annoyed both with the bf and I walking in and with the questions we were asking about the flavors. Her less than friendly demeanor not withstanding I was going to try the chocolate because I am a chocoholic.
We ordered raspberry bark, 1 cayenne truffle, 1 blueberry truffle, and 1 coconut truffle. The bark has an excellent dark chocolate taste, not too sweet, with small bits of raspberry bits. The truffles have great smooth filliings… the cayenne a great peppery bite at the back of your throat, the blueberry tastes like blueberries and a great purply color. And the coconut, great taste but not too sweet.
I would come back for the chocolate and just deal with the not so great service.

Not bad! Being a total confections snob, where I turn my nose up at Godiva, I didn’t expect a whole lot from Mendocino Chocolate Co. BUT, I love being pleasantly surprised! It was inexpensive, (well, remember for me, I usually pay $ 2.50-$ 3 for a tiny piece at Christopher Elbow) nice sized, and had a GREAT selection of stuff I wanted to try!
The dark chocolate turtles were pretty good and the mint truffles are yum yum. I also enjoyed the Angela, dark with orange; the Buena Vista, dark with irish cream coffee; and the Mendocino Macho, dark with dark. Sense a theme here? Now if I can only get my boyfriend to get me chocolates regularly…
The shop itself is a cute little place on one of the main streets. Super nice lady behind the counter. I’ll definitely be back

The chocolate here was decent, as a lot of other reviewers mentioned, service is unfortunately lacking. We got a white chocolate covered caramel (sand dollar) and a pepper truffle (dark chocolate with cayenne pepper) for about $ 4.00. Both were very good.
I would recommend going to Papa Bear’s Chocolate House.

From the outside this chocolate shop appeared to be charming but inside was another story. Inside the chocolate shop it seemed as if the shelves were half stocked with product. Perhaps, the one redeeming factor at the time was the glass case that contained the various types of chocolates and truffles.

willie nelson– white fudge with vanilla flavoring enrobed in a white chocolate coating with a yellow rose which tasted dense, overly sweet and artificial.
key lime candy– filling similar to marshmallow fluff with an intense splash of lime flavor enrobed in a white chocolate coating.
coconut– filing similar to marshmallow fluff with a muted coconut flavoring enrobed in white chocolate and topped with toasted coconut.
chocolate caramel– sweet caramel enrobed in dark chocolate sprinkled with sea salt.

Decent customer service. Most of the chocolates I purchased behind the glass case tasted in one word: artificial. Its a shame that the Seafoam candy was old and horrible tasting — being someone that’s lived in Seattle and on Whidbey Island I was definitely looking forward to having some good old Seafoam from the PacNW. I don’t mind spending good money on quality chocolates but unfortunately these were not good quality.

The cashier was so rude, I wish I walked out. Sorry to interrupt your reading to patronage your store. Tip of the day: If you didn’t hear what a customer says, don’t shout, «UGH, WHICH ONE OF WHAT?!» As I was pulling out coins to give exact change, she actually tapped her finger on the counter like I am a little old lady paying all in pennies.
P. S. The over-​priced chocolates weren’t worth it.
