Headlands Inn Bed & Breakfast

Nothing but positives to say about this adorable place. Right from the start our hosts, Denise and Mitch, were friendly, helpful and charming. Could it get any better? Well, sure, we got to stay there!
We had the Wilson room, which is spacious, yet cozy. Comfy bed, fireplace and a nice table by the front windows. There is a private deck, but this was the end of December, so we looked, but were not able to use it.
The highlight were the breakfasts. Each day it was different and fabulous. We had mentioned our dietary preferences in advance, and Denise had notes and made arrangements to accommodate. So, we had a variety of egg dishes with varying seasonings and accompaniments. Tasty, hot and simply delicious.
As for the property– the parlor was darling. We spent several hours there on this trip reading, having tea and snacks.
We will definitely visit the Headlands Inn again, And so should you…

We just came back from the loveliest stay at the Headlands Inn. It was our first B&B experience but definitely not our last God willing. The place is homey, comforting, and relaxing. We loved the food (wow!) some of the freshest and tastiest fruit and ingredients. Everything that is put out is done so with care. From robes, bath salts, makeup remover wipes, they think of everything. We enjoyed the tea and cookies in the upstairs parlor from 4−7pm. Only downfall was our room, the Stofle, was right next to the front door, so, from time to time you could hear the door opening and closing as well as some talking from the bathroom lol! but it wouldn’t dare stop us from coming back. This was a relaxing get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday stress. We enjoyed walking around Mendocino and the eateries around were great too. The place is charming and the staff is superb, very helpful and nice. Wish we were there right now. Highly recommend! Already planning to come back!

Adorable bed and breakfast in the heart of downtown Mendocino!
My fiancé and I booked the Casper Cottage, which is the detached guesthouse on the property. This cottage has its own fireplace and bathroom and was a wonderful, relaxing retreat for the weekend. We still had access to the main house, but didn’t take advantage of the 4−7pm tea time in the upstairs den. Maybe next time!
The cottage itself was very very cozy. It must have recently gotten an upgrade because in old photos, the cottage has carpet, but we had new laminate floors instead. The bathroom is also really nice and pretty much brand new. If not for the California drought, I would have totally used the jacuzzi tub. There was also an extra space heater which was great because it’s been chilly and we parked it in the bathroom during the weekend. The bed was also very very cushy and I can see how it might be «too soft» for firm sleepers, but for me, it was heavenly!
Breakfast came to us every morning at 9:00am with a very pleasant «Good morning to you!». Our breakfast came on a tray in a little mailbox outside our door and the food was delicious! It always came piping hot on the cutest China!
Super duper friendly service! Jeffrey welcomed us on Friday evening and gave great suggestions on where to eat. I didn’t get the name of the lovely gal who helped us check out on Sunday, but she was super cheery and even gave us a little tag to get a free tasting at Husch winery on our way back to the Bay.
I only wish we got nice large logs for burning in the fireplace because we had to keep replenishing the fire with what I’d normally use as kindling/​starter pieces. But that’s because I like me a big roaring fire: p

Wife and I decided to do a road trip up the coast to see the redwoods for my birthday and it was my bright idea to not make reservations and just find a place to stay. We struck out four times in the area until one B&B told us that he knew there was a room or two available at the Headlands. We rushed over and met Denise who was very friendly and helpful and they had a room open and it was probably the best room in the house. The room has a bay windows looking out to the ocean and a king bed and fireplace we could not have asked for a better room. Denise told us that breakfast would be served in our room at 9:00 and when I cringed at one of the ingredients she asked what I would like and made a special breakfast scramble for me and the breakfast was incredible. I would come back here anytime they are great people the rooms are very clean and comfortable and make you feel like you are stepping back in time, in a good way. When we said it was my birthday Denise even gave us a birthday discount, could not have found a better place if we had spent hours looking and made a reservation, highly recommend the Highlands and there staff.

My husband & I just got back from a 3 day stay in the Headland Hideaway cottage. We were celebrating my 50^th birthday & I had been researching hotels, inns, restaurants & shopping for the past 3 months and I had quite a detailed itinerary in store for us. We arrived at the cottage Friday afternoon & were both delighted with our choice of lodging right away. It’s tucked away on a secret garden deck that you get to through a quaint path after passing through the heart gate, just a block & a half from Lansing. We decided to get some early dinner to go from Patterson’s, eat in & relax after the long drive. I had intended on trying one of the other restaurants in town for a special birthday dinner, on another night, but our cottage was so peaceful, homey & relaxing, we ended up ordering to go from Patterson’s and eating in every night. I loved the deck for night & early morning viewing of the stars. The bed is definitely on the luxurious cushy kind. The bathroom was quaint & well-​stocked.
This was the quietest, most private and relaxing stay I’ve ever had outside of a vacation home. You can’t beat the combination of privacy and convenience to restaurants and shopping. The innkeeper also gave us a card for free ice cream at Frankie’s when she learned it was my birthday. I didn’t meet the innkeeper myself but my husband said she was extremely pleasant & helpful. We can’t wait to return!

My husband and I stayed here 4^th of July weekend. I highly recommend, we stayed in the Stofie room. It was clean, the beds were extremely comfortable and the staff was friendly and accommodating.
The rooms were furnished with fireplaces, toiletries, and soft shower robes.
The gourmet breakfasts are delicious and delivered at 9am. My favorite was the French toast!
One morning we had a fishing trip and would miss the morning breakfast, they were so nice to pack us a breakfast Bag to go!
If you’re in Mendocino, stay here! You will not be disappointed.

This place is fantastic! The breakfast was tasty. The view of the ocean and garden from the room with the king bed was great. It’s clean. It’s a little pricey, but it was worth it. We went when the music festival was down the street. I definitely recommend visiting the Mendocino Headlands State Park nearby for a great sunset.

This was the best hotel experience I’ve had in a long time– (and I travel a lot!)
The location is absolutely central, the staff is warm and inviting, but not intruding, the room was clean and cozy and the breakfast was totally delicious.
On my third night in town, I checked out of the Headlands and moved into the Stanford Inn (a luxury property in town, with many more amenities, larger rooms and a larger price tag). (Note: I only left the Headlands because my dog was joining me mid-​trip and the Headlands doesn’t accept pets.) My point in bringing this up is that in the new hotel, I actually found myself missing The Headlands, truly appreciating their attention to detail and personal touch they added to my days in Mendocino. There was conversation, an open door, they remembered my name, had fresh flowers in the room everyday, personalized the breakfast for my food allergies, made me feel so comfortable and at home in this town. There were even hugs at check out. I will not forget this place, and hope that if you have the chance, you take it and go because it is part of the magic in the world!

We had a two night stay in early April 2015. It was our first trip to Mendocino so we decided to splurge and pay the big money.
The «inn keeper» Denise was friendly and helpful regarding things to do and places to eat.
We had the «Hideway» which was nice because it’s physically detached and away from the main B&B property. Unfortunately, staying in this room excludes you from breakfast.
Each evening was a social gathering which allowed you to visit with other guest; this was a nice treat. It would have been nicer with homemade treats versus store brought but it was still a pleasant part of the stay.
We were there during a cold, wet period and the heater in our room didn’t work. They supplied a space heater until the service tech fixed the room heater, which was not until the next day. I did expect them to give us a break a the room rate due to that inconvenience but no such luck.
The best part of this place was its location: walking distance to everything.

My partner and I would highly recommend Headlands for your Mendocino stay! We booked three nights in the Switzer room (top floor), the bed was unbelievably comfortable and we enjoyed our fireplace each night. We never heard other guests from our room… the house was very quiet. Breakfast was truly phenomenal (so warming and nutritious, but still a treat!) and they were very accommodating to my partner’s diet at the time (vegan). Kellie, the innkeeper, was friendly and helpful — offering us great advice on what to do and how to get there. Check it out for yourself!

There was a storm that hit Mendocino and it was causing a lot of electricity outage all over town. The whole village was out of electricity. Mitch and Denise had the generator going so we still have the comfort within the Inn. They also moved us to Barry room so that we were not disturbed by the noise of the generator from our original room. The room was bright, clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. Breakfast was delivered to our room in the morning and they were delicious. The bed was super comfortable. And btw, from Barry room, you can see the ocean. It was a great place to stay.

Great place, location perfect. Breakfast is fantastic and accommodations are great. Only complaint is the shower. Poor pressure and shower head low. Bathrooms could use a redo.

We got the Barry room on the top floor and it was so comfortable! Also we loved the fireplace in the room.
Breakfast is brought to the room at 9 AM! And it was so tasty.
There wasn’t much of a view, but we will definitely consider coming back again.

We had the time of our lives at this splendid B&B. The staff was unbeliebably helpful, pointing us to areas (restaurants, locations) we might want to visit on our trip, as well as offering to move luggage, giving us directions to our next stop, etc.
Getting the room booked was simple. You get to talk to a live and personable innkeeper, are not placed on hold, nor do you feel like a number. Mendocino itself is beautiful, but the inn was perhaps the biggest and best part of what made this weekend a special trip.
The Switzer room, on the top floor of the main house, was very elegantly cozy. The fireplace lit easily and was a delightful place to play one of the board games they had in a curio. While sipping tea that the innkeeper offered, we nibbled on their home-​baked cookies and other goodies (including candies).
The bed was very sweet, with a quilt and perfect pillows and bedside chocolates. Hypoallergenic soap was in the bathroom. Robes were available. We took advantage of lavender/​orange spa treatment salts for a nice long and hot luxurious bath.
The big house is very quiet. We felt completely alone in the place, with the exception of the innkeeper. The house is close to absolutely everything the quaint little town offers (which is a lot for a small town) — high quality galleries, superb restaurants, ocean viewing, the best kind of bookstore, craft shops, higher end and unique retail clothing, a chocolate shop, music store, and much more — every kind of shopping and petite luxury that makes time away from home better.
The best part of the visit though was the unbelievably fine breakfast at the B&B, brought to our door, with the morning’s copy of the SF Chronicle and fresh cut flowers. This was the most fantastic breakfast I have EVER had. I am not a quiche lover, but what was mostly like a quiche was served, with Mexican veggies and flavors in a crispy filo-​edged bowl. I can no longer say real men (at least this one) don’t eat quiche.
The roasted veggies were divine. A wide selection of teas (my fiancé had coffee instead), juices, home-​baked breads (pumpkin with chocolate) and yummy corn muffins were on our tray, in the bay style window that has a look at the village and the sea. But, this isn’t the end of this love story. Absolutely delicious baked cinnamon apples mixed with granola, yogurt, and fresh blueberries and strawberries delighted our senses. A fuschia blossom adorned the dish. The chef must be a pro, and a good one at that, because I’ve rarely had as fine quality for breakfast at fine restaurants. The whole meal was unbelievably delicious.
Long story short, I can’t say enough good about this place. There’s more, but not enough time to relate it all. The place is a remarkable bargain at close to $ 150 a night in the off season, including the remarkable breakfast and service. Other rooms at the inn are more expensive and fancier I presume, but we felt like royalty in this lovely space.

Once again Unilocal has filtered my review. Why am I not surprised?
I stand by my original review– this place is highly overrated.

This was our second stay at the Headlands. Last was 8 years ago and we were happy to be back and plan to return.
Why 5 stars? Denise and Mitch are wonderful hosts, the rooms are clean, comfortable and nicely located in Mendocino. It’s neat to stay in an old historic building and enjoy the beauty and quiet of the coast without a lot of distractions. The breakfasts are so good, my husband and I ate it all even though we were stuffed.

We booked a two night stay in the Barry room, and had such a lovely and relaxing time. It was such a relaxing experience to get a fresh and delicious breakfast delivered every morning at 9. Every breakfast was obviously made with care and attention, and it wasn’t your run of the mill eggs and bacon.
I shopped around at a few different B&Bs in the area before deciding on Headlands. Everywhere else I had seen were either much more expensive, or reviews had mentioned needing repairs. Headlands is the perfect cozy B&B with great amenities and not too modern that you lose the rustic feel. As everyone else has mentioned, there are no TVs in the room, but who wants to waste time watching TV while you can enjoy all the beautiful sights that Mendocino has to offer?
Denise was a great host, and even mapped out the entire town and nearby Fort Braggs to show us how we could spend our day. She even offered to make a reservation for us at 955 Ukiah, which was another nice gesture on her part. We didn’t get into town until almost 10pm and there was a personalized note on the front door greeting us with instructions for late check in.
We had such a great time during our stay that we’ll definitely come back to enjoy Mendocino at Headlands again!

This was my second time visiting Mendocino and boy was it worth coming back! My husband and I came for a nice getaway for our one year anniversary. We had such an incredible experience at headlands inn! Denise, the owner, is absolutely fantastic! She made us feel completely at home. Our room was very cozy and even had a fireplace! Each morning we had a fresh, hot breakfast delivered to our room and man were they incredible! Every morning was something new and everything was absolutely delicious! The afternoon with tea and cookies was perfect after being out in the foggy weather. We felt very comfortable there and thoroughly loved our stay. We HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone visiting Mendocino and looking for a grey bed and breakfast.

Very helpful, patient and stayed out of our way. What I mean is, they didn’t intrude or go out of there way to be bothersome or annoying… Are you Ok?
The breakfast– 5 Star! I’m so sorry that I didn’t take photos of the breakfast tray. Breakfast was at your door between 8 – 9, and they would knock gently on your door to let you know that breakfast was ready. To acknowledge staff was a «Good Morning» to them.
We stayed in the Stofle Room. It is a large room located in the front of the house. With a super clean bathroom and shower!!! The room was a table and chairs to eat at and also there was a fireplace, which we didn’t use. Being next to the door, I didn’t notice the traffic from others residing going in and out of the house.
We didn’t use any of the other rooms, but from 4 – 6 they hosted Tea time up stair in a lounge area.
I will stay here again the next time I visit Mendacino!
