Meet the Business Owner

Rob C.

Business Owner

Rob Cosgrove is a serial entrepreneur and inventor working in data communications and robotics. In 1985 he began experimenting with data compression and backups over telephone modems. In 1987 he released the first commercial online backup software designed to back up and restore microcomputers using modems and telephone lines. Over the years he continued to develop the technology, and performed the first online backups from an airplane, a sailboat, a cell phone, an erupting volcano, and (still) the longest remote backup ever using multiple satellites, for a total of 88,000 miles. Going retro, he modified a pair of old modems and did a remote backup over tin cans and a string. Rob is the author of several books, the latest of which is The Online Backup Guide for Service Providers: How to Start and Operate an Online Backup Service. He is President of Remote Backup Systems, providing Online Backup software powering Online Backup Services for more than 8,500 Partners in 64 countries.
