I just moved to Memphis and set up my studio(I am an art quilter) and was looking for a few items for a piece I am working on. Since I was already nearby I thought I would stop in Hancocks and see if they had what I needed. I walked in and approached the sales desk and the salesperson stood there having a personal conversation with another employee for at least three minutes. Finally I said, «Excuse me.» She turned around and said«Hold on» and then finished her conversation. Then she turned around and said«What?», as if I was taking up her precious time. I asked if they carried Pellon products and where I might find them, to which she replied«Probably over there, I don’t you know, you’ll have to look» And then she turned around and ignored me. I was rather taken aback. I managed to find the interfacing section and it locked like someone had literally thrown them on the shelves… not finding what I needed I started looking around. It was the worst organized, and dirty, fabric store I had ever been to. Some fabric had fallen from shelves and had foot prints on them. Another employee came down the aisle as I was noticing this and stepped over the fabric on the floor and walked right on by, no can I help you, nothing. Needless to say I won’t ever go back to this store. Guess I will be shopping at Joanns from now on.

I really love this store, but unfortunately the service is slow. I feel like every time I try to get some fabric, I wait in line for cutting-fabric-line for atleast like 20 minutes, then i have to wait in another line just to get rung up. If you come here, make sure you have time because this isn’t a quick in — and — out. I do love their deals on their fabrics and how cheap everything is though!

I had an incredible first experience at this store. The sales staff was knowledgable about the location of all the materials I needed. They gave me great suggestions about what I should do to get an item custom made. I will definitely go back.

I prefer Joann. It’s unfortunate but the Hancock’s brand seems to be leaning more and more toward Crafts and less toward actual sewing needs. The last time I was in here, I asked for a certain kind of binding and they pointed me in the general direction of a whole big wrack of stuff and I ended up with the wrong thing because I didn’t know the difference. I asked for something specific and if they’d gone to the trouble of showing me exactly where it was this would not have happened. I also feel like this place is always understaffed. It’s taken me upwards of 20 minutes just to get a bolt of fabric cut before.

What a great place. A throwback to simpler times. I went in to buy buttons and wound up wandering around for an hour. They were having a great sale on home décor fabrics(53% off anniversary sale) so I got lots of samples. It’s no Broom Corn or Calico Corner, but there’s still a nice selection at reasonable prices, especially at less than half price. I’m no seamstress, but I can manage a pillow or table runner. I thought of using strips of elegant fabric like ribbon to dress up some simple, plain curtains I have. Or squares of fun printed fabrics for table toppers. Hancock’s has branched out into home décor items and craft things(beads, yarn, etc.), and I happened on some great simple square ottomans that were 75% off($ 7.50 each) — great for storage and not bad looking. It’s nice to visit when you have time to explore. I got lots of great ideas.
