I haven’t had Cap’n D’s in a very long time. The last time was a few years ago and it was from the one on Summer(that’s now the Super Submarine shop) and it was horrible. But I was craving some scrimps yesterday and didn’t want to leave the house so the husband was kind enough to brave the D’s on Union Ave for me. He said the overall experience was pretty pleasant — the restaurant was clean and the chick at the counter was friendly. We both ordered the current $ 4.99 butterfly shrimp meal special and it was pretty good. I got baked potato and fried okra for my sides. The okra was not very good but I didn’t expect much. The baked potato was good. The shrimp satisfied my craving. We were going to get Popeye’s and they probably would have been better but we checked out their website and found that everything on their menu has MSG. I can’t eat MSG because I get migraines. According to their website, Captain D’s shrimp doesn’t have MSG. So there.

My family had dinner at the Captain D’s in Midtown on 4÷8÷15. I ordered the Surf n Turf meal. The shrimp was bad because after consuming it, it made my 7 yr old daughter and I very ill. I had also gotten a side salad as one of my side choices. The lettuce was brown and tasted awful. I hadn’t eaten Captain D’s in years and now I remember why. Thanks for the food poisoning!!! Thank God we’re both still alive!!!

I don’t eat fish very often. I ordered fish and chips with a side of corn and some of those banana cheesecake thingies. I must say I was extremely impressed with the customer service. The lady who took my order was awesome. I love how they present your order to you before bagging it up.(I had mine to go) I will say I enjoyed my meal. Food was fresh and cooked properly. Although… The banana cheesecake thingies were awful. I think they were either overcooked, burned, stale, or just plain nasty. I don’t suggest ordering them. And I’m glad they didn’t fill my plate full of the crunchy scraps.

Captain D’s freaks me out. Like in an «I don’t know if this place is clean as it kind of looks like an oversized outhouse and they serve fish in a fast food environment» freaks me out. To be fair, I’m equally as disturbed by Long John Silver’s– but more because I had a friend who worked there in high school and his skin and clothing secreted the stench of their awful batter for hours after leaving any shift. Such fond memories. I don’t claim to be a health nut. I won’t ever be the gal that corners you and lectures about saturated fats, cholesterol and the benefits of organic vs non. However, there’s something about fast food, fried, fish planks that just don’t jive with me. The fact that the batter is sometimes thicker than the actual fish meat is oh so icky. As far as their healthier, baked options– yeah, those freak me out too. Please don’t serve my seafood complete with fake grill marks through a drive-thru window. It just isn’t right… on so many levels. In any case, I’ll take a pass on Captain D’s and go across the street to Sekisui any day of the week.

I commend Captain D’s for offering healthy fast food. I loved the baked salmon and/or tilapia, along with the availability of broccoli and a baked potato. That’s some good eatin’!
