Established in 1954, Buster s Liquors & Wines is a family-​owned and operated company that offers a variety of wines and liquors. The company has been recognized as one of the top 10 wine shops in America by the Wine Spectator’s Market Watch Magazine and has been voted #1 Liquor Store in Memphis by the Memphis Flyer’s Readers Poll. Buster s Liquors & Wines also publishes the Drinks magazine, which is a quarterly lifestyle publication designed for lovers of fine wine and premium spirits. Buster s Liquors & Wines is located in Memphis, Tenn.

History

Established in 1954.

Buster’s has been owned and operated through three generations. What started as a modest little store on Bellevue In south Memphis has become a beacon for customers from all over the region who travel miles to come shop with us as Busters is TN’s largest volume retailer servicing over 350,000 customers annually!

The founder RM «Buster» Hammond passed in 2008 at 97, but left an incredible legacy to his family. A more detailed description of our interesting history with photos can be found on our website. It is a true tale of determination, brawn, and luck.

Business Owner

Josh Hammond is President of Operations. He joined the family business after graduating from The University of Alabama Business School in ’93 and has since brought Buster’s into the 21st century with his fresh perspective and attention to detail. His affinity for technology helped Josh spearhead our transition into a modern web era with the launch of our new e-​commerce website just last year featuring every product we carry in the store. In addition, his philanthropy is well known throughout the community; and his commitment to quality control and customer service has bean integral part of the store’s success. Josh has traveled to Italy, France, Australia, and Chile, as well as throughout California and Washington State learning more about wine.

They have a huge selection of all kinds of booze. Everything you might want, they’ve got. Its always super clean and well organized. No one has ever offered me any kind of help here, but they’re always super friendly at checkout. It’s definitely worth the drive to go here instead of The Bottle Shop on Park (which I have forbidden anyone in my household to ever return to).

I am glad I waited so long to do this review. Buster’s Liquors & Wines recently went through a major (and much needed) expansion of their retail area. This is a rough estimate but it looks about twice as large and they added some really cool new features. They already had probably the largest selection of wine and liquor in Memphis and now even more so. They added a walk in beer cave, one of those frosty rooms filled with glorious carbonated refreshment. They have a meat and cheese selection with different hors d’oeuvres for pairing with your choice of libation, how convenient! Their wine prices are competitive and there are always plenty of friendly staff members to help you find that particular bottle or suggest an alternative. Best part? Checking in here on Unilocal will usually give you a 20% discount on your next wine purchase. Yes…20%. There are a few other liquor stores I go to when scouting for something rare and special, but Buster’s gets the vast majority of my business.

Huge Huge Huge selection. It seemed like they had everything, everything that is Woodford Reserve Rye. As it turns out, no one in the entire town has it. The staff was super helpful.

Busters is amazing! It’s very large and their selection is incredible. The last time I went there they were pretty busy and no one really helped me, but the time before that I was helped quite quickly. Their selection of wine, beer, and liquor is just superb. Honestly, even if an employee treated me badly (which has never happened) I would still go because it’s like the Disney world of wine and liquor stores. They’ve remodeled the inside and it’s just so beautiful now, too. I love this place.

Huge selections!!! Cheap prices. Great accommodating staff. I checked in here and got 20% off my wine purchase! AWESOMENESS!!! This place is big and they sell wine and liquor that I’ve never seen before and at reasonable rates. Other stores in Memphis are way more expensive than here. I’ll always go to them when I’m in town. It’s hectic on Fridays and Saturdays too (parking can be crazy).

Best selection and competitive pricing on liquor and wine. Knowledgeable staff is always able to help me locate the random varietal I need for wine club. Looking forward to the expansion being finished to enjoy their take on a growler station. Love that they can now carry mixers and snacks. They have some old standbys and are also curating a nice selection of local and artisanal goods.

Huge fan of this place. They have everything you can think of, super organized, and always fully stocked. The people that work there are very friendly and always ask if you need help. In the event that you do need help, you will be surprised to see that the employees are actually pretty knowledgeable and will give you plenty of input on whatever bottle/​brand/​liquor you’re looking to buy. I also always feel pretty safe when I go there because they always have a security guard posted at the door. Checking out is pretty fast because they have at least 4 cashiers at any given time. I don’t think I would go anywhere else to buy my booze.

This place is huge. And VERY convenient for U of M students and anyone in the surrounding area for that matter. They could do a little better when it comes to organizing and presentation, but you cannot beat that 20% check-​in offer for wine. That baby keeps me coming back every time :)!!

This place gets great reviews for a reason! I am very rarely moved to write a review on this site but this establishment goes above and beyond so I thought I would share my experience. They have an insane selection of wine, liquor and beer, the staff is extremely knowledgeable, and they have good, fair prices. The last time I was in there one of the managers, Mark, helped me with a wine purchase and some fancy beer for my husband (both were perfect choices). He was so helpful and friendly, plus I realized after trying to figure how I know him that he is my favorite singer-​songwriter in town and then I proceeded to get a little star-​struck.
From now on, I will definitely make the drive from Midtown to make my boozey purchases, no doubt about it.

I don’t have much bad to say about Buster’s. For 9 years (long before Unilocal was around), this was my neighborhood liquor store, and most of what I drank was the sweet stuff, or bourbon for my flavor-​of-​the-​week. The store is large enough for an urban area to get pretty much anything you could possibly want. They have hard-​to-​find items like sake, kosher wines (Passover), and every flavor of vodka you could think of. The only issue I have is that I stood there looking lost for 4 minutes waiting for one of the 5 employees with empty hands to offer to help me find something, and I truly had to ask to be helped.

They sell booze, wine and beer… cheap booze all the way to the ultra premium limited run booze you will not find in your average spirit shop. Probably the most extensive wine selection in town and generous selection of high gravity beer. The best part about Buster’s to me is the people who work in the store seem to genuinely know the products. Know that might seem like a simplistic statement, but when you are a whiskey drinker and you need a recommendation on a good wine or vice versa your not going to get bad advice and you can maintain a budget. Great selection, fair prices, helpful staff and free boxes… what else do you need?

I came back here again!
They still have same sale beers that they were sale last month. Actually they are pumpkin beers. The selection is not that big. Their mix-​match is a little bit pricier. Most 6packs are about $ 10 but individuals bottles start at $ 2.
They have tons of wine bottles. I picked up one bottle of organic white wine today. About $ 10. I checked in on Unilocal,so I got 20%off for this lovely wine.
The staffs are friendly and nice.
I wish they posted the original prices of sale wines just for information and had more kinds of beers!

I have been a loyal customer at Buster’s since I moved to the U of M area over a year ago. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars (maybe more) there in the past year. They just lost me for good though.
I bought a bottle of wine there last night (the wine I ALWAYS buy and love) right before they closed for the night. When I got home and opened it, the smell coming from the bottle was nauseating and not that of good wine. I tasted it to make sure my sense of smell wasn’t just off for some reason. It tasted worse than it smelled. I understand that wine can go bad sometimes because of faulty corks, etc. I don’t fault Buster’s for that at all as they have no way of knowing. I do, however, fault them for how they handled it when I went into the store today to try to exchange the wine or get my money back.
The manager was EXTREMELY rude and acted as if I had done him some great injustice for wanting to get a new bottle or get my money back. He actually laughed in my face when I told him that the wine was spoiled and he asked me if I knew the difference between good wine and spoiled wine. I told him that I’m not an idiot and he could smell the wine for himself and see that it’s clearly bad. He smelled it and then agreed with me that it was bad. Not once did he apologize for the inconvenience or for his lack of customer service skills. He gave me a new bottle and I walked out. What kind of manager says condescending comments like that to a customer? Especially a loyal one. They know me in there. It’s just sad. Time to find a new liquor store.
I’m only leaving 2 stars because aside from poor customer service, they do have a huge selection of wine and booze.

Great 1 stop shop for all your boozing needs. Extensive selection of wines, beer, champagnes and liquor. Prices are fair as well. If you buy a case (10 bottles, even if they are not the same items), you get 10% off, which is not much, but anything off is a plus. Staff is eager to help and even carry out your purchase to your car.
It’s Friday night and we’ve bought way too much stuff here… but hey, it’ll be a great weekend :)

And they have a tasty organic merlot for $ 10 and some change. And when I compare prices to other liquor stores, they are always the best priced (especially when it comes to Tito’s).
Oh and their staff is incredibly nice. I bought a whiskey set the other day when I was on my way to a party so they helped me wrap it. definitely went above and beyond.

I have to give this place all 5 stars. They have the largest selection in Memphis of wines and liquors. They also have a very knowledgable staff. The prices are typical.
This is the place to go to find new liquors and wines. They tend to have the newest stuff first.
