Since October 6th, 2010, the studio has been under the new ownership of Christine Boyer and Isaac Christopher with renovations to the Hot Yoga room in the Sanderlin Center competed in October 2012.

Our school is 3,000 square feet with modern and recently renovated men’s and women’s locker rooms, both with gorgeous tile showers and lockers for your belongings. Our yoga classroom is 1,400 square feet with cutting-​edge industrial heating and ventilation, is well lit with beautiful windows along the north wall and amplified with state-​of-​the-​art sound equipment. We are located in the heart of East Memphis just off of Poplar Avenue, across the parking lot from Whole Foods and have ample parking.

I will start by saying that doing bikram for 6 months did improve my back pain and I do not doubt the health benefits of yoga. I also had a few visiting teachers that I really loved. However, I consistently had bad experiences at this studio. When I started, there were a few times when I actually felt like I might throw up and I was not allowed to leave the room or drink water because it was before water was «recommended». At one point the instructor snapped at me because I tried to drink. I understand the thought process behind wanting people to get used to the heat but I was beyond uncomfortable and actually sick. Additionally, I work as a doctor and have occasional times when I am running in between responsibilities. I cameIn right as class was starting (was not actually late) and the instructor made a snide comment about how «the bus must have been late». I was also charged for three extra months of classes because I did not email that I wanted to cancel my subscription and instead just asked them in person to cancel it. They would not refund my money. Ultimately I was interested in doing to gain some strength and flexibility and I just overall didn’t have a good experience.

If you’ve seen my review of the Overton Square location, you know I’m generally a fan of Bikram yoga and more specifically, of Bikram Yoga Memphis. What can I say? I like to sweat, and you won’t find nicer instructors or yogis anywhere.
This location has a couple assets that the Overton Square location doesn’t: nearly unlimited free parking in the large lot of Sanderlin Center, and a much more varied class schedule with 90 minute classes happening both in the early morning (5:30 am) and later evening (6:30 pm). Same great rates ($ 59 intro special, $ 99 unlimited auto-​pay) good for both locations.

I’ve practiced yoga before. But bikram is so so different. The heat is intense. I consider it moving meditation, you are so inside and in tune with your body during practice. If you are one who worries that people are watching, this would be a great exercise for you. You cannot handle the heat and contort your body while watching others. Follow the instructions about not eating before and hydrate. I found after practicing for a few months, I was no longer so sensitive to heat, which was a welcome change being I’d sweat if someone mentioned 90 degrees. The changes your body will undergo are amazing. Bikram is this former gym rats favorite workout.

What a workout!!! Great way to detox. Great way to increase flexibility and improve your health. Staff is very friendly. Been going here on and off for years. TIPS: bring water– lots of it!!, DO NOT BRING GATORADE or any other flavored beverage to bring in during the session (you will be called out lol,) bring a mat and towel, be on time or class will start and doors will be locked, if during a busy time– take ur shoes off and reserve a spot you want before changing if u haven’t already, under the fans or on the left side are the best spots!!!, don’t get discouraged– try it atleast a few times before saying you hate it, if ur tired– rest. Don’t leave. This is hard work but it feels great after!

After feeling like I was going to throw up the last 75 minutes of a 90 minutes class, I walked to the locker room thinking «These people are flippin’ crazy!» About 10 minutes into my 40 minute drive home, I was thinking «Maybe if I wear fewer clothes and drink more water it won’t be so bad tomorrow.»
I can’t explain it but Bikram Yoga is addictive. I am sweating buckets and feeling like I am going to puke at different times in the class but when it’s over I am trying to figure out when I can make it back again. I’ve only done regular yoga twice about 7 years ago and hated it and definitely never wanted to go back.
The studio, reception area and locker room are all nice and clean. The instructors (I’ve had someone different each time) are all great – very helpful, check on you when you look like you having issues, etc. While I am sure that Bikram is not for everyone, you should try it at this or the Overton Square location if you’ve ever thought about doing.
I am hoping that soon I won’t be the clumsy girl on the back row.

Really great instructors, facility, environment. I went for one class to see how I would like adding Bikram yoga to break up my weightlifting.
Everyone was so nice. From instructors to participants, I really felt like I was right at home while I was there.
The class was very challenging but I enjoyed every second! I felt like I was going to pass out a few times and earned a whole new respect for Bikram Yogis. The instructor was very attentive and made sure I was okay.
It was a very different and new experience! I would definitely go back but probably on a monthly basis. Just too much to include this into my weekly weightlifting routine.

My body loves Bikram Yoga. Welcoming staff, encouraging teachers, Over past year, I am physically and mentally stronger, **my spine, hips are healthier-​no pain** when I lay flat on my back on the floor. Zero injuries with this exercise, not the same with others I’ve done. Absolutely try it at least for 1 mo and see if it’s for you.

Got a groupon and did my first class this morning at 0530! Woo! The 90 minutes was ridiculous and i thought that i was in shape. The owner was an amazing woman and really paid attention to us. Totally worth it and in a great neighborhood, one of the hottest yoga studios i’ve been at!

Bikram Yoga Memphis is the 2nd Bikram studio I have been to, the other being in Tempe, AZ. I have attended 2 classes so far and I have found the staff to be pleasant, helpful and encouraging to everyone. Yes, both instructors I have had ask that you limit when you drink water. However neither were rude, maybe that has changed from last year. There are people of all shapes, sizes and abilities in class.
I do wish there was more than 1 shower in the men’s lockeroom, but that’s not a huge issue. The room in as hot and humid as it is supposed to be, the studio does not smell and it’s not overcrowded.
I honestly don’t know what anyone is complaining about. $ 40 for your first month, give it a try.

As an avid travel/​bikram junkie, I really do love this studio. Its clean, the smell is very minimal, the room is hot but not horrific and the staff are very friendly. More than one toilet and shower also make it a pretty phenominal bikram studio. Every instructor I’ve had has been very thorough with their class as well as encouraging and positive. A very enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

I have been practicing at Bikram Yoga Memphis for almost 5 years. I was so apprehensive the first day I walked in. I had read up on how to prepare for the hot yoga… and I followed some suggestions, but really the only way to find out is just to try it. I fell in love with Bikram Yoga… and had never previously practiced yoga. I love that anyone can feel encouraged or welcome here regardless of health, weight, etc. No one is looking at you while you practice. We are all trying to focus on ourselves.
I have practiced Bikram yoga in many other locations, and I love that it is pretty much the same everywhere you visit. The Memphis studio is on the more disciplined side, which I love… yet all the while friendly, helpful… and accommodating. There is nothing to fear. Instructors are helpful and encouraging and always willing to give you advice.
Schedules are great… and they have a 5:30 AM M-​F!

I’m a little conflicted as I write this review. Growing up in Chicago my favorite newspaper columnist was Mike Royko. Mike would often write about great little restaurants he came across but would never reveal the name or location. He was worried the publicity would make the place more popular and difficult to frequent. I feel the same about this place, it’s small but very clean with a great group of teachers and a certain camaraderie among the students.
I have excercised/​worked out my entire life, running, lifting etc. and can assure you that this is as complete a workout as you can get. 26 poses, 90 minutes, 106 degrees with humidity, you will sweat a ton. I would also say that this is a program for all ages and fitness levels. You will find experienced people who can bend themselves into unnatural positions with apparent ease (after years of practice) as well as newbies whose sole goal is to «stay in the room» for the entire 90 minutes. The teachers are great, they push and encourage you in a positive way.
Let me be clear, there is nothing easy about the program, but if you are patient and willing to put in the time and effort you will see the results they promise. The program literally works every muscle, joint, tendon, organ, and system in your body. It’s a combination workout/​physical rehab routine. Your joints, (knees, shoulders etc) will have improved strength and range of motion, you’ll lose weight, build muscle, improve flexibility and more.
I highly recommend it, give it 30 days and see what you think. Mark

I just moved to Memphis 2 weeks ago. It was a new year and I was looking to challenge myself. I have tried Bikram Yoga a few times in other places but never stuck with it. Found this place on here and I love it! The staff are super nice and some are tougher than others but they all want you to grow and get better as you continue your practice. They always greet me when I come in and leave, and make a comment about how much better I’m getting at my practice. They are also relatively cheap compared to some other Bikram Studios I have tried.
This place is popular so you do need to get there at least 15 – 20 minutes early if you want a certain spot in the room, but they have added 3 new class times this coming week to accommodate the spike in participation. The locker rooms are small and become a mad house between classes so I just shower at home. I have joined the 60 day challenge and will be doing day 8 today. They even have a cool little chart up front with my name on it, and cute stickers so that I can track my progress.
I highly recommend you try this place. It’s in a great shopping center with plenty of parking, and everyone is super friendly. All of the staff members even make it a goal to learn everyone’s name. They also have a ton of info on their website. 5 stars!

Great workout and I like the updated room. My reason for giving them two stars is I understand it is a strict and very guided practice but I have taken hot yoga in Los Angeles and the instructors are nothing but nice and encouraging and the instructors here are rude from the moment you walk in the door as soon as I walked In all I saw were scowling faces. They are very bossy and act if as they are the only people in the world who are accustomed to yoga which is not the case I have had way better service and instructors elsewhere. I wish there were better facilities and a bigger space. A review below mentions the terrible smell and the cluster of people. It’s all true.
I’ve been to other Bikram locations in Tennessee that don’t have the smell and have enough classes/​space to feel comfortable.
I really hope that another Bikram studio opens in Memphis. Maybe it will help with crowd control.

I love this place — and apparently so do a lot of other people — so there’s always a crowd.
In order to be working out, I fully believe you have to be sweating. Plus, it seems to me that working out in a ridiculously hot room makes you burn more calories as well as rid yourself of toxins. Total bonus in addition to just the yoga.
I wish they had more classes or maybe just a bigger space. No matter when I go, it seems that there are more people in the class than I prefer. I’m hot already, I don’t want someone near me — ick.
But as far as the actual classes and facilities go — amazing… absolutely amazing. I don’t think I’ll ever try another yoga studio again. They’re pretty near perfect. The instructors are helpful and the studio is immaculate. It’s just that pesky crowd…

Great place for newbies and the experienced. The teachers are attentive and will call you out on your weakness so that you can continue to improve in the following classes.
I joined during one of their beginner specials and glad that I have 2 trips to Memphis this month to fully take advantage. They have classes as early as 5:30a or as late as 6:30p. Pricing is mediocre as I’ve seen higher and lower classes in NY but with the limited places bikram is located, it’s worth it.
Bring a towel and mat or they are available to rent for $ 2 each.
Refrigerated water will easily get warm within 30 minutes. Freeze your water for cool sips during «party time» — I also heard and agree that coconut water does wonders.
warning: if you haven’t been to a carpeted bikram class, it smells like rotting gym socks mixed with eggs and old milk. however, you get use to it and it doesn’t bother you as much after you find yourself trying to keep up with the class.

One of my good friends raved about the benefits of Bikram Yoga – inner calmness, increased energy and flexibility, better physical endurance – so I gave it a go.
Having me write about yoga of any sort is like having the Pope rate a local mosque, but I have lived in Memphis my whole life, and the A/​C went out in my vehicle last summer, so I know hot. Or at least I thought I did before I tried this yoga. Now, I know I do.
The moment I walked into the actual studio, I knew I was in trouble. I lay my mat down before the class started and just tried to breathe. In. Out. It was hard. Then our instructor (see photo) introduced the first posture to us: breathing. Good, I thought, I’m having trouble with that very thing.
The basic format of the class from then on was assume a position, do another few, then, every so often, lie on your back («Savasana” – it’s an actual position.) This was repeated for 90 minutes.
For me, the class consisted of holding a couple of positions, sweating the equivalent of my birth weight, then, after about 20 minutes, holdng down the fort with Savasana for the next hour. Breathing was still my main objective. As a previous reviewer stated, students are asked not to leave the room during the entire 90 minutes. We were to consider ourselves winners if we were able to stay in the room. I am proud to say that I was a winner. Go Dave!
Afterward, my friend asked me how I felt. Then he asked me if I was OK. I’m not quite sure I answered him either time. I went home and dreamed about air conditioning. But a funny thing happened that night – I felt OK. Pretty good, in fact. So I returned to Bikram the next day. I was able to actually hold more of the poses than the previous day. I thought, «I can see why people do this.» Before the class ended, I considered purchasing a month-​long package. Maybe even a three-​month.
Then I went home and never came back to Bikram ever again. The end.
