Yesterday was my first visit to James Joseph in Medford. I asked Erica for«bright blonde highlights, but natural looking.» She totally pulled off my potentially contradictory request. I got an amazing scalp massage, was offered tea and coffee, and generally had a relaxing, wonderful experience. And my hair looks great!

I was offered a drink upon registering with the receptionist, my stylist was on time, the scalp massage during my shampoo was phenomenal, and my stylist, Rachael, did a perfect job on my hair. It was exactly what I asked for! I usually go to the location on Newbury, but I think I may be switching to this location!

Absolutely the best stylist I have ever had the pleasure of being a client. Emily is by far the BEST. She listens to what you say and really gets what you want. She is very talented. I’m so happy and excited for everyone to see my new look!!!

James Joseph Salon is fortunate to have Dori. She is the best stylist that I’ve ever been to. She is terrific and I always leave feeling terrific and looking my absolute best. In fact, she is so good that even though I’ve moved to Wolfeboro, NH, she is still my stylist and I gladly travel to Medford for her to do my hair every 6 or 7 weeks.

I went in for a haircut and blow dry yesterday with Manuela. She was wonderful and my hair looks great. I am grateful to have found a salon and a stylist who give me the quality I look for in a haircut while also the convenience of free parking and fair pricing. I usually go get my hair done in boston on newbury street. Well, not anymore. This salon has a great ambiance, is conveniently located and it’s trendy. Manuela was extremely nice and made my experience one to remember. Everyone else including the lovely girl at the front desk was wonderful. A must try.

Okay — It seems hopelessly overpriced, but I am willing to pay it. James Joseph Studio is clean efficient and competent. After getting my cuts messed up at some other local places, I feel that Jordan(an advanced stylist who charges more than the standard fare) finally got my hair under control so that I can start to transition to a real haircut in the next few months. Yup the damage from buzz cut diletantes takes a while to grow out.

I saw Emily a week ago and was so pleased with my highlights and cut. I have big curly hair and she did a great job shaping it up. She was super attentive and thoughtful. Definitely will be back.

So disappointed with the service at this salon. I went for the first time a couple months ago and my color was done wrong. I had to return the following day for it to be corrected … I decided to give it one more shot and went back two months later for a root touch up and gloss($ 100 treatment). As my hair was being colored the stylist informed me blow drys are not included in a color treatment and he «didn’t have time to stick around to dry it because he needed to leave at 6». I was left under the processor for too long and finally an assistant came out to wash my hair. When she finished she pointed me in the direction of some brushes and told me to hep myself. The stylist never even came back to even check the color or to brush my hair out! If I could have gotten money back for the color I would have … so disgusted with the service and I would NEVER recommend someone to go here.

I’ve been to this salon a few times this year after relocating to the Boston area. I’ve never had a reaction to hair dye or hair stripping before(not my first rodeo). However after a $ 140 cut & color plus $ 30 tip(before I knew what was coming my way), I discovered that I’ve been treated to a pretty unexpected and uncomfortable chemical burn on my left ear. I called the salon this morning to convey my issue. She stated the manager was off today but she would pass along my complaint and I would hear from her. Also that it was the same mix they’ve used before and not sure why there would be a problem. The assistant who rinsed and washed out my color spent an unusual amount of time cleaning my ears, particularly the left one. I remember because this was pretty unusual. No, my ears are not normally red or crusted with puss-like scabs. I’m very upset and disappointed.

I am 31 years old and have spent my entire life trying to find a salon that I settle into and grow with. I want a salon that I can have the type of bond with, that no matter the phase, mid-life crisis or transitions of gray, I can be myself. Honestly, I’ve been disappointed for so long, on so many different occasions that I am emotionally and physically(not to mention financially) drained. I’m tired. Until last night! I signed up for the class with the assistants that are in training. I mean at this point, why not take the risk! And for the money it was definitely worth taking a chance on someone willing to learn. No one could possibly be worse than the«hairdresser» that ruined my hair recently, but I will save that for another review. Nicole is the sweetest, most personable hair stylist, I have had the pleasure of having do my hair. She listens to what you want and drumroll please… gives you what you want! She took her time with me every step of the way. She was attentive and focused on delivering perfection. And she absolutely nailed it!!! She amazes me. How can it be that someone who is learning can be better than everyone I have gone to with years and years of «experience»!!! I am honored to of had the privilege of helping Nicole grow and I can’t wait to book an appointment when she is done training!!! And Kim Calouro… the Senior Stylist Trainer… yep she’s a hair God! She was so attentive and helped whenever the assistants had a question or if they were overwhelmed. She was willing to get her hands dirty. She cared about teaching the assistants and making them feel comfortable. It is a wonderful program with an excellent teacher, producing the best hair stylists around!

I am so not coming back to this salon where they charge $ 160 for just $ 60 service. On phone while booking appointment it was $ 75 however when ended up actually paying it was just double to what discussed before. On top of that $ 40 for blow dry which was never discussed ever. Very unprofessional and literally don’t see any change in my hair color even after paying such hefty amount. I will never recommend this place to anyone who actually loves their hair.

So my experience is with Emily only. And I think I just got the best haircut I’ve ever gotten. I’m not even kidding. So good I just felt compelled to show some love on Unilocal. I’ve been here three times and each time it gets better. Everyone here is incredibly kind, fun and all about the customer service. We have a TON of fun. DEFINITELY don’t miss Wine Wednesday. If you can’t make it Wednesdays, they’ll be quick with the tea(green, etc) or water. Emily cuts my hair each time and she’s a lot of fun to chat with and does an amazing job. Clearly cares about making you look MONEY when you walk out. Can’t say enough great things about her. I did the barber shop thing for a while and it was fun and I totally bro’d out there — but man… you get pampered at these places and I’ll take it. If I do one thing once a month that’s about pampering — this is it. Wash — head and neck massage… another wash after the cut… no bros at the barber shop are doing that. Which you may or may not want — depending on your preference — which is cool with me. Definitely recommend JJ Studio if you’re a dude who likes a little high class with your hair cut — with a side of fun conversation. Thanks!

I am obsessed with my hairstylists from James Joseph Studio in Medford. Dorotea Baio does my color and Marcela Melguizo cuts my hair.(I use two because the first time I made an appointment, they were the only ones available for the services I needed. Now I can’t stop!!) They are some of the most personable, talented, and kind hairdressers I’ve ever experienced. I’m not someone who gets their hair done very often, so we always clearly discuss color possibilities and cuts that will last for a while. I’m getting married in October, and we have already discussed color possibilities that will go with my up-do. They are never judgmental and always helpful — they clarify exactly what you would like, exactly how it will look, and never have you guessing. It is always an enjoyable experience when I go there — I will continue to go back to see Dorotea and Marcela!

Next to Wellington station, this salon is convenient whether taking the T or driving(there is complementary parking for clients). Today I had Michelle, a new stylist here do a blow out for me($ 40.00) and she did an excellent job. It is sure to last a few days. Thanks, Michelle! See you next time.

The place was way too overpriced for a men’s haircut. $ 60! Also I had to wait for another stylist to cut my hair because the first one did not know how to use clippers. That should be something every stylist should know. The person that I did do my haircut was great though and had a very welcoming personality.

Kayla is absolutely awesome –gives great haircuts, longlasting blowouts, and most importantly understands and delivers the exact white blonde highlights that I am looking for. In addition, she doesn’t overly push products but is informative and helpful with any questions I have regarding the health/color/cut of my hair. I have referred numerous friends to her and plan on sticking with her as long as I can!

Dori is a life saver! After receiving a horrible haircut at a salon in North Chelmsford, I drove all the way down from Westford to see Dori. She not only re-shaped my haircut, she was an absolute pleasure to have cut my hair. She clearly has the training and experience to keep her clients coming back time after time and has earned the title of «Senior Stylist». I will not make the mistake of going anywhere but James Joseph Salon again. They are true experts in hair!

Stopped coming here because I can’t afford to spend $ 300 on my hair and not be WOW’ed by it. They need to realize that they’re NOT on Newbury Street, so they shouldn’t be charging Newbury Street prices.

Katie is great stylist. She first, took a closer look to my hair texture, fullness and quality gave me some pointers on what she would like to do with it, and after 20 – 30 minutes of her magic touch, cut and wash I was transformed;) Thanks a lot, will be seeing you shortly! Staff couldn’t be more friendlier too! Five Star Service!

I’ve never been one of those people who have a serious committed relationship with my hair stylist. If anything, I’m a one and done kinda chick when it comes to haircuts. I always had a ‘grass is always greener’ mentality, thinking someone just around the proverbial stylist corner would give me a sexier side bang, better highlights, choppier layers. That is until I came to James Joseph and decided, maybe I can be a one salon woman. I’ve done highlights, lowlights, ombré, side bang, layered cuts, angled cuts. I’ve always walked out feeling amazing. My go to is Jordan and he does an amazing job. He also talks you through each process so you’re both clear on exactly what’s going on and there are no tear inducing«that’s not what I wanted!» moments. This is Medford so, as you’d expect — you’re getting a much better deal than nearby options in Cambridge, Somerville and Boston. Another bonus of being in the burbs? Convenient free parking. All that and online appointment scheduling? Monogamy’s not that hard after all.
