Gold’s Gym

I see all these negative reviews and I’m surprised as I’ve been having a great experience with this facility and its staff for the past 4 weeks. When I first got here, Chris welcomed me and showed me around, he explained all the fess and terms and conditions, so there would be no surprises. I went with the month by month subscription which was $ 10 more as I wanted to check this gym out first and I’m not disappointed. I was also interested in getting a personal trainer and Chris recommended Clayton, which again is great and really helps me out.
In which regards the exercise machines, I’ve never had to wait to use them as there are plenty and the locker room is always pretty clean. The only downsize would be the parking, which is full almost everytime I go there as it’s shared with a church I believe and sometimes I have to park on the street, but it’s not such a big deal.
So if you are looking for a nice facility, which is decent in price and not over populated, this would be the right place.

The people that run this place do not treat people with any respect.

Very nice facility. There is a great variety of machines and the gym was clean and well kept. More importantly, great customer service! I was visiting family as I live in NY. I needed a place to keep my routine going and I called this place. The receptionist was friendly and told me I could pay a one time guest fee for $ 15. When I arrived, the FD girl called the manager (or owner) as it appeared she was not sure how to charge $ 15 on the cc… probably since most guests more then likely paid cash… which I did not have. The Manager told her I could use the facility for free as long as I write a review on Unilocal.I am in finance and deal with high net worth clients on a daily business… I know customer service… not to mention I ran a few fitness clubs in my day including an Equinox and a NYSC. This manager obviously has an acumen for business understanding a review would have a longer lasting, greater impact on his business than a $ 15 guest fee; unlike many local gyms that are greedy for every single penny that goes into their clubs and yet you don’t see your dollars invested into the clubs with broken down machines and filthy conditions. I am not writing this review because I felt obligated to, but because this placed EARNED it by understanding the basic principles behind good customer service. Well done. Keep up the good work! Needless to say I will take my time walking home as I have jelly legs from all the leg machines I had at my disposal! Many thanks :-)

HORRIBLE STAFF. Do not even consider it. I mean, outside of the scam-​my membership fees, the staff just takes the cake.
Juliana, I see her commenting on the negative reviews here, could take a Customer Service 101 class. LOL, how does a person like her be assigned on the front desk? Even the ‘manager’ Sean admitted that there was miscommunication on Juliana’s part, he did nothing to help resolve the issue. Even better, Sean kept telling me to back off and just take it as it is because Juliana might get fired if I complained and it is on me if that happens because she just makes 12 bucks an hour and she really needs the job. Tell you what. I would have cared if she was nice.
You will regret getting yourself involved with Gold’s gym– especially the Medford branch.

Sean is the man. Clean facilities, no wait time and very minimal if any. Came home for some leave sin the USMC and he treated me right. Bathroom is nice. Sauna could be hotter though. Still best gym around.

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST! Way to shove memberships down people’s throats. False advertisement on their website. The 7 day pass is actually a 1 day pass. Who decides if they want to join in one single workout? Most gyms give more than 1 day. Than when you ask for your license back they ask if you like to join and of course they give the «price is only good for today». No thanks with your BS. For the same price, upgrade weights and friendly front desk personnel, I rather join Boston Sports Club minutes away! It’s to bad because one of my favorite instructors moved to this gym, but I’ll wait for him to pick-​up classes else where! Thanks but no thanks Gold’s Medford…

The gym overall gets the job done. However they make it so easy to join but a pain to leave. The «abc financial» company that handle the billing ask you for a written notice for cancellation and then you have to pay one additional month to cancel. It sucks.

$ 39.95 per month is not to much to be around people who really care about their health and wellness! Not super expensive but not so cheap that non gym people come around to pretend workout for FREE bagels and pizza. (PLANET FITNESS) Staff is always friendly and GM John goes out of his way to make sure things are always right or to assist members with any issues. Great place for the person serious about their health and training.
If you need a membership ask for Sean! He set mine up fast and easy no hidden BS!

I signed a contract for one year on this gym, but for personal reasons I had to cancel on the next day, I spoke to /​Shaun/​Monday, the law of massachussets when signing a contract in a gym, you have 3 business days to cancel the contract, but was not so with the gold gym Medford, and refused to cancel my contract refused to return my money I had paid the first and last month, i had to call the Attorney General, I ask For a copy of my signed contract and they refuse to give me a copy, I ask for the receipt of the money I paid and they refused to give me, then the next day again before the 3 business day expired, I handed a letter saying that I wanted my money back and the cancellation of the contract in accordance with the law, and given into the hands of (Shaun), not knowing that I was recording all the talk on my phone, his offended me calling me miserable and I was a broken, his said I need my money back because I needed new clothes and new shoes, very disappointed with this place and people work there, I feel very discriminated, and I still have the record INSULTS Shaun made to my person, all happen at week ago,

WORST GYM EVER!
I wish I could give negative stars. The people that work there are just meat heads, so rude you walk in and say «Hi» and they look at you like your bothering them.
Parking lot is a joke shared with 2 other businesses and people just park wherever they want… NEVER any parking
Trying to cancel your membership is a 12 step process that includes a hand written letter and THEN having to send a check to some company.
STAY FAR AWAY!!!

It’s too bad when you go to a gym and they inform you that they have two different kind of membership — a contract one and another one that they call «monthly», so the second one you pay extra, but you can cancel it at any time and you don’t go thru any headache. This is BS and I have gone thru hell in order to cancel my membership with the Golds Gym in Medford.

I walked in today to speak with Shaun/​Sean or however he spells it
Asked about classes and was trying to do some research… he RUDELY called me out and said it was «bs» and I’ll never come back. then he turned his back and walked away.
WHO DOES THAT ??? This guy is a piece of shit and perfectly reflective of the gym business model.
Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else or save your new years resolution for next year.

If I could give zero stars I would. I gave a 1 week pass to my friend to try out the gym because the classes are really good. I have been a member for approximately 8 months.
After my friend and I went to a class the associate sat down with her and stated that if she joined today she could get my pricing of $ 40 per month. If she didn’t sign today she would have to pay $ 200 to start and either $ 60 or $ 70 a month I don’t remember the exact amount. I asked if my friend could try the gym a few more days in accordance with her 1 week pass (which didn’t expire for another 5 days) and get the discounted rate he stated (almost verbatim quote) no she had to sign up today or pay higher price or she would not be working out there, don’t blame him he was doing what his manager told him. He stated if you don’t want to sign up today then go to Arlington. The associate then proceeded to stand up from the desk and walk to the front desk.
I am extremely vexed over the poor customer service. I would think the purpose of the 1 week friend pass would be to experience the gym and recruit other members. My friend was interested in joining the gym but after the poor used car salesman tactics it makes me question why I belong to this gym at all if that is how a potential new customer is going to be treated. I will consider terminating contract. The staff at Arlington are much friendlier and provide better customer service.

I signed up for this gym. The staff member who signed me up was named Shawn. He convinced me on all the classes they offer as well as the unique machines they have. I’m pretty excited to start working out here.

Avoid this gym at all costs.
Employees who sign members up can be incredibly deceitful and lack any business ethics. You can anticipate employees lying to your face just to get you to sign a contract.
When I signed up, I was informed by the employee facilitating my initial contract, that my specific insurance company participated in a membership reimbursement program with Gold’s Gym and that after 2 months of membership, I could contact my insurance company and make a reimbursement claim. 2 months into my membership, I called my insurance company to make the claim and they informed me that no such agreement exists or has ever existed with Gold’s Gym or any of their affiliates.
Do not sign up for this gym.

I joined the golds gym in medford with Sean. He was great. Showed me around and has helped me whenever I’ve needed it. We talk everyday when I come in and he keeps me focused on accomplishing my goals. I would definetely recommend this gym if your looking for a good price and a great place to workout. All the equipment is new and they actually will take the time to show it to you.

I joined a while ago and I will say that the sales team was informative and up front. I have been a member at other gyms that the sales team basically were crooks and liars.
Great energy. Cool staff and wicked clean. One of cleanest I’ve been in the state.

DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS GYM…
They have signs around the gym that say « Unilocal us out.» This is because they want there current members to bump up their Unilocal score but… customer service sucks. If you have ever been in customer services you know what untrained/​careless customer services looks like, right? Well, at golds gym they set a new low. Now let me cut to the chase…
1. If your going to spew misleading things from your mouth… Make sure that the rest of the customer service reps are on the same page so it sounds legit.
2. Don’t say that the gym is clean and then give me a tour of that dumpster you call a gym
3. Third party billing is a bytch to deal with and should be discussed prior to signing up because I personally was told i could cancel at the gym and on the phone. That’s false!
4. Customer service a big joke and thier liars that continously give people the run-​around. I literally lost my appitite dealing with the person who i signed up with… LITERALLY.
Now if you are still thinking of signing up for this gym please, grab the contract and say you want to look it over in private. If you still want to sign it make sure that you grab the copy. PLEASE GRAB A COPY AND CONTINUE TO LOOK IT OVER AT HOME!
Since I know that management is looking at this review let me say this. You have a way better Unilocal score than you deserve.

Great gym, needs more of a professional staff but other than that it’s a great gym!

Inspired by a western themed Unilocal event from last night I think the appropriate way to describe this Gold’s is the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Good…
Finally, there is a non-​yuppie gym with dumbbells that only go over 50lb. If you are looking to actually get results, this is your place. They have dumbbells to 105. Tons of elliptical machines, treadmills, bikes, ab equipment, machines, free weights, and a sprinting track. They also have yoga, spin, and other aerobic classes. When it comes to choosing this place there is a ton of clean equipment and an abundance of classes and that is what the decision really comes down to.
But…for those who want to evaluate all aspects before choosing a place, keep reading (just like you should probably do with your contract).
1) Access to other member gyms (Southie, Fenway, Arlington, Others…)
2) Tanning for $ 5
3) Some awesome & motivating instructors for spin
4) MMA gym and baseball/​softball instruction gym
5) Variety of other classes (yoga, zumba, other aerobics)
6) Women’s only zone for you self conscious chicklets (Not sure what they have in there because I don’t want my face torn off by some crazy Medfahd chick)
7) Child care (haven’t knocked anyone up yet, at least as far as I know, so not sure about this one either)
8) Sauna… so relaxing after crushing some iron!!!
The Bad…
1) When something breaks they take forever to fix it (tanning was out of commission for months)
2) They do not notify their patrons if the electricity is off or the hot water is broken (yes I have encountered both).
3) The bikes could be way better. I have seen a few break. (Sometimes I go to the Southie gym and those are way better)
4) Some of the staff I encountered have just seemed miserable and hate life/​working here (not the best vibe to get from a gym). And in all fairness I have met some really nice employees here as well.
5) They have a juice bar with with so much potential but it is always abandoned. Just let someone come in and set up shop and take commissions off the sales, dude. Free money is so much better than wasted space, bro.
6) Gross ass carpeting in the stretching area. Why not just put down rubber flooring that is easy to clean and doesn’t absorb sweat?
The Ugly…
One last thing that I want to speak to in other reviews. Gold’s has a sketchy financial partnership with ABC Financial in which you much really be careful when signing your contracts. Breaking your contract could get really cumbersome and cause you to spend even more money. But the same exact thing goes for pretty much any place you will join. I have heard horror stories about cancelling and such. Don’t quit and you can help avoid this ugly situation… at least from the neck down :)
