This is quietly one of my favorite parts about headin’ back to Mactown. On the East side of town, right off of Highway 5, on the other side of downtown, Baker’s Drive In makes some of the best comfort food that you can ask for on a hot Texas Summer day. Parking your truck on that small lot with your friends, ordering a couple burgers, a large frozen lemonade or tea, and then enjoying it all on the tailgate is about as hometown feel as I can get. And now, all these years later, nothing has really changed. The style and authenticity of the food and location remain as nostalgic as you want them to be. If you want a quick non-pretentious meal on the East side of town, Baker’s should probably be in your wheelhouse.

Love Bakers. Great staff and delicious food. The sweet tea is the best I have ever had! Love me some Bakers! Burgers, chicken strips, onion rings all amazing. Next on my list is the frito chili pie.

The other review that likened Baker’s to Whataburger type burgers was spot on. Not being a Whataburger fan, I tried the Frito pie, which was pretty good. The kids had burgers, they were greasy but they kids enjoyed them. Fries were just okay. Same for the service, which I’d describe as brusque more than friendly or welcoming.

Got a referral for this place. it’s in my neighborhood in my route home. I ordered the chili cheeseburger and fries. All around good burger. I wished the fries had a touch of salt. They were cooked fresh tho. It was kinda flat and the patty wasn’t thick at all. But it was good. Id go back. It was also good to see that the crowd they were catering to were ethnically diverse. Id go back.

Baker’s Drive In. What can I say. I can only describe is as what fast food probably tasted like in the 50’s/60’s before the industry started making beef patties out of wood fiber cellulose and beef tallow. Truly outstanding product, truly fast and appreciative service. I’m SO going to be going back, again and again…

All around great drive in! Make me feel at home when I come here! The service is awesome and they make you feel special. Now… The food is great drive in food. Burgers, tots, chili dogs, etc… I can’t wait to try the bologna sandwich.

Very good old fashioned drive-in burger. Buns are fresh buttered and griddle toasted with a chewy crunch, chopped onions, good tomatoes(no ends), bacon was fresh and flavorful in adequate chunks, a very thin tasty beef patty, my wife likes her’s thin so that was a huge plus. Crinkle cut fries were good and crispy on outdide and creamy inside. Service was great. Quick too, no less than 10 minutes from order to food. Too bad I was so stuffed though cause I really wanted to try a fried pie and soft serve ice cream. We’ll definitely be back.

If you blink while driving down highway 5 you will miss it. It is an old timey drive-in where you have to get out of your car and place your to go order at the window. This place screams Mckinney! It is loved and a back bone of this city. If you are craving an awesome burger, chili cheese tots, and a milk shake this place has it all and it is good! You can see right through the ordering window and you can tell it is old but super clean. The frito chili pie is the best in Mckinney. The entire time I was pregnant with my second kiddo I craved this place daily. It is that good. Get out of your comfort zone and try a Mckinney staple. You won’t regret it.

My husband and I come here when we want a good burger. We love the old school feel and the drive in. Makes for a good mini date night! Also, the fried brownie bites are a MUST!

We tried Bakers for the first time this week. I drive by this place almost daily and never gave it much consideration until reading positive reviews on Unilocal. We tried the Texas Double Cheeseburgers with Chili Cheese Fries. The burgers were excellent and very similar to Whataburger but with chopped, green lettuce which have it a more fresh crunch. The fries could have easily been split and was a lot of food. Will be back for sure to try some other menu items.

A-Okay. I phoned my order in, en route; he wasn’t the friendliest on the phone. We got disconnected, and I half thought he hung up on purpose lol. Maybe they were just busy. Fried pies: they were out Texas cheeseburger: not memorable Corny dog: not memorable Tots: good Fried mushrooms: I’d get again I must return to try other things… especially the fried pies.

I love this place! You feel like you’re stepping back in time and visiting a piece of McKinney history. Folks are friendly, and the food is just what you would hope for from a drive in. You order from the window and can then take the food to go… or eat in your car like we do. They make a great burger, but my favorite so far are the chicken fried steak fingers with gravy for dipping. Can’t wait to try more items on the menu!

The fries were nothing special, but the sandwiches and tea we had were AMAZING. Thanks for Unilocalers recommending this Mckinney treasure!

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Great service, good(unhealthy) food. Only downside is no place to eat other than your car and they serve RC cola. Which is the most disgusting soda ever. Tots, chili cheese fries, burger and hot dogs are yummy. I love a nice thin patty(think whataburger/in and out) with lots of topping options. I’ve had one of the chicken sandwich’s and it was great too!

A friend told me about this place, or I would have never found it or stopped had I actually noticed it. Noting fancy to draw you in, but the burgers are A+! I asked the owner how long they have been around, I believe he said since the 50’s.(They are the 3rd owner if I recall.) I’ve since told many people about it, and I’m happy to give them a 5 star review now that I’m on Unilocal.I have only eaten their burgers, because that’s all I can order when I go there. Get the double cheeseburger.(Large French fry is probably enough for 3 people to share, so get the small.) It’s a white drive in with a sketchy metal rain shield… don’t miss it!

Nice place for the most part but the last 2 – 3 times I’ve been there the employees are different and I noticed for the first time in a very LONG time Bakers got less than a perfect score from the health dept inspectors. I hope this isn’t a trend. The menu is great, typical drive in food you expect. In the past it has been pretty much well executed. I don’t get some of the reviews posted about this being a fantastic hamburger, it is average to maybe a little better than average. It certainly doesn’t merit the rabid comments about being the best ever — don’t get your hopes up. It’s decent, but you won’t get a craving for one. The patties are thin, real thin as in ¼ lb at most, likely less after cooking. Other stuff is good and for the most part everything comes out hot. The shakes are about as lame as they come as is the soft serve. If there is ANY cream in the ice-cream at all it would surprise me big time. If you want a good shake or ice cream go to Dairy Queen. This place is about on par with Pride Burger around the corner. Everything tastes like it came from a bag, pre-made, frozen, all commissary which is typical for drive in junk food. In all, I think the quality of what is served has declined a bit over the last few months and the food doesn’t seem to be prepared with the same care. Now it seems like the only focus is get the food out the window and take the next order as fast as possible. It sucks getting a chili dog that is room temperature and fries that taste like they sat out for 20 minutes and were bagged up cold. This would have never happened in the past. I understand the owners wanting to take some time off but if things fall off any more I’m just going to take my family somewhere else to eat.

Thanks Unilocal.I was looking for a good place for lunch when I pulled off the road and Unilocaled up a spot. It turns out I was right across the street from Baker’s. I am new to the area but I have driven by here several times. From the road it did not look like a place that would interest me. However when I saw the Unilocal reviews I had to give it a try. I am happy I chose to try this place out. I believe it is take out only. I took out the tastiest Texas Cheeseburger you can imagine. I have to watch my diet so I can’t eat a burger everyday. But now when I drive by my mouth kind of waters up. I have to get another one of those real soon! The guys behind the counter are super friendly and appreciate your business. If you are a McKinney local you probably know about Baker’s. If you are new to town or a traveler and are looking for a great burger, check this place out!

Park, walk up and order at the window. Owners were very nice, and lots of different people coming and going. No tables so we ate out of the back of our SUV. The burgers are like others say, «like a memory of childhood times.» These are like the way that burgers use to be made on Route 66. They fry the patty so that it has a good crusty caramelization on both sides of it. Tons of fries that were really tasty, and slightly greasy, lol, forget the calories. I thought both the burgers and fries could have used a wee bit more salt, but I was too lazy to walk the 20 feet to ask for some. Couldn’t have been that big of a deal…
