History

Established in 1987.

Since Geoge May sailed up the Great Egg Harbor River in the late 1700’s to set up a ship building business, Mays Landing history has been tied to the river and the sea. One of the first vessels he built was «license» for a local captain, John Pennington. Early papers tell of the «License» returning from the far east with a shipment of sugar which was stored on the high bank next to Babcocks Creek. That knoll, where the inn now sits, has been called Sugar Hill since that day. Later, during the Revolutionary War, privateer Captain Snell, nicknamed «The Hero of Sugar Hill» captured 19 enemy ships selling their cargo on the docks at Mays Landing. In 1846, William Moore built the Inn as his private residence. History books state that he was engaged in the «building and sailing of vessels». The Inn was the home for the Abbotts & Watsons before being sold to Larry Boylan in 1986, who, along with his brothers, restored the home & opened it to the public as the Inn at Sugar Hill.

Meet the Business Owner

Larry B.

Business Owner

Larry Boylan has owned and opperated the Inn since it’s inception in 1987. Larry, along with his two brothers, Andy & Dan, did not only restored the Inn back in 1986 – 87 but also continue to expand and upgrade the property over the years, most recently expanding the Sunset Lounge at the Inn. When Larry doesn’t have a tool belt on you can find him in the kitchen. «I’m at home in the kitchen» states Boylan. «I love researching then creating dishes for my guests to try» adds Boylan. If Larry is not in the Inn’s kitchen then there is a good chance he is working the pizza oven at the Dockside Grill at Sugar Hill. «I think I was italian in a former life» continues Boylan. Larry not only cooks at the Inn but is also the captain. He is a US Coast Guard licensed captain and offers sunset sails on the Inn’s classic sailboat «Grace» for overnight guests.
