Specialties
Spring Hill is a historic home recognized by the National Parks Service as a stop on the Underground Railroad. We provide tours for visitors to understand the Underground Railroad, the Rotch-Wales families who lived in this residence since 1821, and their Quaker background.
History
Established in 1973.
Home to the Rotch-Wales families since 1821, Spring Hill was designated to become a Historic Site in 1973 at the death of Irene McLain Wales, last resident of the house. Since then, Spring Hill has worked on a mostly with volunteers to maintain the collection, oversee the daily operations, and continue to educate the community on the oldest house in Massillon, but also the importance of the Underground Railroad in Ohio’s history.
Meet the Manager
Sammy Kay S.
Manager
Sammy Kay has been with Spring Hill as the director since August of 2014. However, her passion for the home started at age 10 when volunteering. Like many volunteers and the founder, Irene McLain Wales, the house is much loved as is its amazing and inspirational history. Spring Hill was the home to station masters on the Underground Railroad, abolitionists, women’s rights activists, education reformers, farmers, politicians, soldiers, travelers, and people with the vision to see into the future and bridge social divides. The house holds a history unlike any other in Ohio and the nation.
