More than acceptable, this is one of those joints that you roll up to thinking, «Hey, I’m gonna get something to snack on…» Yet the portions are good, the flavors are deep(if not a touch salty) and the atmosphere is a dive in a respectable way. Gyros rock with a good tzatziki and the onions rings were a real treat

I stopped in at Foxy’s yesterday for lunch on a hot dog whim. I ordered a Foxy Dog — the typical Chicago dog, and the Kathey dog, which comes with cheese sauce, bacon, mustard, and pickle. Both were bizarrely flavorless. The bacon on the Kathey dog was so crispy(burnt) it had no flavor and an unpleasant texture. Possibly deep fried? And the cheese sauce was unremarkable. While the Chicago dog had all the expected toppings, it could have used more mustard, preferably of a better quality. The sport peppers were also really hot for sport peppers. Burn-your-lips hot. They overwhelmed all the other flavors. The dogs themselves were quality. The service was also sub-par. There was one person working, and she was pretty scattered with taking orders and payments and making the food, which I could understand, but she was also down-right rude to my coworker who accompanied me. So, curiosity satisfied. I may return once more to try one more menu item that looked interesting — Charley dog: kraut, pickle, mustard…- but it’s certainly not going to become a regular thing.

Good change of pace for when I eat out for lunch. Pretty good Cheese-steak on a good roll, and crinkle cut fries always will have a special place in my heart. Not a huge hot dog fan, but this place had a good variety of things I look forward to trying.

Aunt Annie flew in a couple of weeks ago and we decided to grab a dog on our way back from the airport. We choose Foxy’s over Woofy’s due to some other reviews for the gyros and I’m always looking for a great chile dog. Ms T had the gyro and thought it was very good. It was loaded with meat that was very well seasoned and flavorful. She ordered no onion, so enjoyed it with tomato only. The bread was very nice and soft. The tzatziki sauce was very good. She likes lettuce on hers and will ask for it next time. Aunt Annie had the Italian beef and said it was also good. Plenty of meat, very tasty. I am skeptical of Italian beef since all I have had is Portillo’s in the Chicago area. I have found it pretty boring and unremarkable. Anne said this was better than that. I had two chile dogs. Again, being a «no-raw onion» guy simply had chile and yellow mustard. Sorry but these did not make it. The dog(Vienna beef) was devoid of salt. I find the places that feature Vienna dogs to be pretty formulaic. It is just a guarantee of commercial mediocrity. They are much like the takeover of the Schnuck’s Delis by Boar’s Head products. They make about a thousand different products, none of them much good. It just makes it that much harder to find good, old fashioned cold cuts and sausages with real character. So I thought perhaps they may have some good chile. Again, I was disappointed. The chile lacked depth and flavor. It was pretty boring and again, lacking salt. The beans were a mealy texture. They don’t make a coney dog sauce, they just put their chile that you would get in a bowl, on the dog. Coney dog sauces should have their own character. So if you go here, stick with the gyro. I’ll keep looking for a good chile dog. The rating is for my chile dogs.

Awesome Chicago-style hot dog place! Cool little venue in the middle of bleak Maryland Heights. I got the Foxy’s Red Hots with the works and it was great.
