Rainbow Sweets

Stopped in after a weekend of skiing, on a relaxing drive home. We ordered 2 savory pastries for lunch and some of the famous profiteroles for dessert. The food is on the expensive side, but well worth it. I have never had anything similar to the profiteroles before, they’re a really unique offering!
Bill, the owner/​waiter/​chef was full of energy, excited and proud of his product, and fun and friendly to talk to.
Definitely worth a visit!

We came upon this bakery while on vacation exploring VT. From the outside it doesn’t seem like anything special but believe me it is. The owner is hilarious, he has a whole schtick that he does with customers that’s pretty entertaining. The great thing about this bakery is that they also offer lunch, which is all baked. You have a choice of spanakopita, b’stilla (with chicken), empanadas or a savory brioche muffin thing filled with cheese & spinach. We chose the brioche, empanada & the b’stilla all of which come with a Greek salad. Everything was delicious, although if I had to choose I would say the b’stilla was the best. For dessert we got the Johnny Depp’s, which are basically cream puffs coated in a cream brûlée sugar shell, amazing is all I have to say! A definite stop if you are in area.

I had been on a diet for a while and if I were going to blow it I wanted it to be great. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I walked in and when I first saw the pastry display thought maybe I’d be disappointed. Maybe I hadn’t chosen the right place to throw caution to the wind? However from the moment our CPC («Certified Pastry Consultant») spoke I was hooked. Very funny with a dry wit and clearly passionate about what he made. We ended up leaving with two boxes and a treat for the road — a bear paw cookie. Ordinarily, I turn my nose up at things that cost me calories without chocolate but from the first bite I was hooked — cinnamon, sugar, butter, creamy yet crunchy — yum. Chocolate almond bark was melt in your mouth and I didn’t want to stop eating. Only bummer is that I left my prescription sunglasses on the counter but after trying the sweets on the ride to Hardwick (where we are staying for the weekend), I realized that it must have been my subconscious secretly planning to get me back there! I have to agree with the rest of the reviewers– this place is really something else. I have passed it countless times over the past three years on my trips to Montpelier but only stopped for the first time this past weekend. Bill was so friendly and funny and helpful. I grew up spoiled with italian pastries in NYC and rarely can find places outside of that state that are even close to comparable. This little pastry shop is definitely top notch. The pastries are true to form. I was so impressed with Bill’s enthusiasm for these sweets– he is a real professional. They also serve coffee and other delectables. I think they have pizza some nights too. Anyway, stop in this cute little pastry shops for some tasty treats you won’t forget!

Everything here is absolutely awesome! The B’stilla is amazing, and the St. Honore is off the charts! If you’re anywhere near here, you’ll be glad you stopped!

Ate there on the spur of the moment passing through on Sept 17, 2014. Walked in and immediately told to come to the front to be shown what was on the menu, we knew then we were in for a treat. The food was absolutely amazing, best we had our trip through New England, nothing else even came close. The waiter/​chef/​owner, Bill, was entertaining, informative, and witty. You have to be on your toes to find it, no traffic light, stop sign or anything else of the like, and parking is limited. But well worth it. We live in GA, but if we are ever back in the area, we will make sure this is on our itinerary. Do not pass this by.

My mom had passed this place by two times prior when she was camping with my brother and she really wanted to visit because of the name of the shop. Little did she know what we were walking into.
It was a big surprise! The owner was friendly and hilarious, I watched and listened to everything he said and it’s easy to say: this is the best service I have experienced in my life. Funny, lighthearted and it’s like everyone is an old friend! The food was good, I didn’t really know what to get off their small menu and ended up getting something I didn’t like that much. A bite from my mom’s meal was excellent tho.
The Johnny Depp was deliciously, my favorite thing I tried in the shop. I’ll definitely stop here again on future camping trips!

Such a fun experience! Lunch, pre-​pastry (Johnny Depp), and Post-​pastry (a cannoli-​cream filled pound cake with chocolate ganache frosting) as well as the box we took to go were all delicious! Love a flaky pastry that isn’t too sweet so I was in heaven. Bill, the owner, was TOO mic fun! If you’re anywhere in the area, go! You won’t regret it! Wine and beer served.

The drive between Atlantic Canada and Ontario can take one of two routes — Ottawa-​Montréal-​Quebec-​Rivière-​du-​loup-​New Brunswick and beyond, or Ottawa-​Cornwall-​upstate New York-​Vermont-​New Hampshire-​Bangor-​Calais-​New Brunswick and beyond.
Rainbow Sweets is reason enough to take the US route. This is a restaurant that is an expression of its owners. Simple décor that might lull you into thinking this is just one more roadside diner. But the food. Holy Hannah the food! Most things have pastry involved — bastilla, spanakopita, empanadas, tarts, and even a savoury brioche. And what pastry!
My partner and I each had the bastilla (shredded chicken with almonds, saffron, cinnamon in layers of amazingly delicate phyllo pastry) with a greek salad on the side that was delicate, rather than blustery with macho chunks of feta.
Then the dessert choices. The cherry cheesecake and a Caffe Americano for my partner. I couldn’t decide between a giant chocolate cake and the linzertorte, so owner Bill had a word with himself and recommended a half-​slice of each. The cake’s buttercream was SO rich and delicious, with little chunks of chocolate on top — a miracle of smoothness and unctuousness on the tongue. Then the linzertorte, with buttery pastry latticed over the dark raspberry flavours of the filling. So different, but both amazing.
Two lunches, two «desert cocktails» (water), two desserts, two coffees, and a half-​dozen «linzer boats» — tiny kayak-​shaped linzertorten to go: $ 52 US. The best meal of the trip, and one of the best meals you’re going to have anywhere.
39 years in business, and deserving of 39 more.

My family and I just happened to stumble upon this place on our vacation. What a great find. Every item we tried was just amazing. We shared a B’stilla and an empanadas. WOW! The flavor and texture of the food was fantastic. The owner, Bill, was entertainingly witty through out the meal. We couldn’t pass up dessert after the delicious entrees. Again, amazing. If you are with in an hour of Vermont I would suggest making the drive to visit. The food is well worth it!

Fantastic! Worth the drive for both the food and experience. The owner is a treat in and of himself with his knowledge, salesmanship and obvious love of the craft; combine that with the magical food and this place is a special gem. You won’t be able to help picking up more than you planned as the fresh treats come piping from the oven and the owner entices you with a description of just what you’d be missing if you passed up the one last confection.

What can we say that hasnt been said. The guy is a pastry savant when it comes to dough. His lunches are great, just go with the flow and enjoy whatever he has made, it will be good.
The desserts are to die for as well and i am not a dessert guy.

Wonderful food and funny quirky owner. We were driving in an RV and trying to find a place to park and get lunch as we drove through Vermont from New York to Maine. We were starving when we spotted Rainbow Sweets and fortunately there was room on the side of the road to pull the RV over. We would have been happy with some sandwiches. We walked in and were pleasantly greeted by the owner and the aroma of amazing baked goods. We ordered the empanada, morrocan chicken and brioche and the Johnny Depp for desert. It was all marvelous. We will definitely be stopping in on our next trip through Vermont. What a treasure.

Starving after hours on the road, I finally found a nice-​looking local place for lunch. The owner is quirky and fun to talk to, and has a range of fresh pastries to choose from. My advice: Only select from what was baked today. I believe that’s always true for meals, but desserts should be fresh. Cakes and pies that are a day or two old get stale — and that’s because he likely doesn’t use preservatives. Also, bring some money, it’s not cheap (but the quality is worth it).

Ahh, eccentric Vermonters are the spice of life. Excellent food and over-​the-​top baked goods. The owner Bill is as funny and knowledgeable as every other reviewer says. He’s been here 36 years and how he apparently manages to great each customer with the same enthusiasm for his creations is quite amazing. I promise, though, you’ll buy more then you expected to as Bill makes you salivate with his amazing descriptions and you keep eating until your cry Uncle.
Somebody should write a book of his food descriptions. For example his balked lunches– Empenadas, B’Stilla, and Spanakopita — bake in the oven «so the flavors marry each other, instead of just holding hands on the stovetop.»

I will drive hours to come here when the craving hits. The deserts, especially the cream puffs, will melt your soul. While the food portions are café size at entrée prices, you won’t be sorry and you’ll still leave full. The owner is a hoot and you won’t even mind the weird hours or the parking once you put some spanakopita in your mouth.

Thank god for places like Rainbow Sweets. The food is exceptional but the desserts are really extraordinary. The owner makes it an experience and really takes the time to educate you on what he’s made. I have to say it’s an unusual and welcome experience — and I thank him for offering this. We enjoyed a wonderful evening of gluttonous pleasure.
There isn’t a lot of variety but that’s good — if you’re a foodie you’ll know why. He puts everything into the dishes that’s he’s creating and serving so it’s not the variety you’re going to a place like this for. You’re going to see what he’s created.
I highly recommend Rainbow Sweets — it’s really charming and on par with experiences I’ve had in tiny eateries and wineries in Italy and France. The food and drink has a story behind it and the owner wants to take the time to tell you the story. Not everyone will go for this experience — like if you’re in a hurry for example, you should probably pick another spot — but we were a party of six and thought it was great.
