Jefferson at Marina Del Rey

We just moved in and Kristen and Gordon have been amazing. They really try to accommodate. They have been super helpful. I am impressed with how they try to be helpful. I’ve rented in the marina for over 20 years and they are first to actually care about their job and the tenants. Everyone working here is pleasant and great at their jobs. We are right next to the dog park and it definitely gets noisy when the dogs are excited but if we close the windows it’s no big deal. They make it really easy here and I truly appreciate it.

Miguel is so promt and efficient! He always does an amazing job with any maintenance work that needs to be done. Everything always comes out so professional! Love him! Thanks Miguel. Keep up the great work!

Worst living conditions I’ve ever experienced and incompetent management. Construction is horrible, you can hear every phone call and conversation from your neighbors. No courtesy patrol and management doesn’t do anything about noise complaints or neighbors smoking and smoke filling apartment. Neighbors are lovely, woke up one night to domestic disturbance by a police helicopter overhead. Guy broke out all the windows and patio glass door until cops broke in and arrested him. Worst of all, residents regularly set off fire alarms in the middle of the night. Not smoke detector, fire alarm. Piercing buzzer and strobe lights go on for 20 minutes until fire department arrives to turn it off. Happened twice this past Sunday night at midnight and 1am. Maintenance is equally incompetent. Regularly have to make repeated requests until they get it right. They can’t figure out which sink is clogged, bang up the walls when working on washer/​dryer and leave paint on the floor and gouged walls, or recently replaced the hose on the sink and it sprayed everywhere when we got home. Management takes NO responsibility for issues, doesn’t care about you’re safety or well being. Avoid Jefferson at all costs! Notice all the empty units on your tour, there’s a reason so many are empty.

I have lived at Jefferson for a few years now and love it! My neighbors are very nice, the office staff is helpful and friendly, and the experience overall has been great! The office staff has changed since I have been here, and I have seen a tremendous improvement in the quality of the building, as well as the response from maintenance/​staff. The clubhouse was just renovated and is now much more useful — they have a conference room that I can use instead of working from my apartment, and a resident lounge and game room where I can get coffee or use when I have friends over. They also just renovated the gym by adding new equipment. I have a dog, so the dog run at the back of the property is great for those who own an animal. I would definitely recommend Jefferson to anyone! Also Juan Carlos and Kristen and Corey are the best of the best in the management office… they are ALWAYS willing to help at any time with anything. :)

I am very family with EVERY apartment complex in Marina Del Rey and Jefferson is one of the top ones for the price.
You get what you pay for: it is cheaper than most places around, conveniently located, pool, hot tub, gym, and entertainment room on site, laundry in apartment (which is rare in this area), maintenance is quick and efficient, and leasing consultants are very nice and pleasant.
There are always going to be negative tenant with one small bad experience who over exaggerate the whole situation and most apartment complexes do not have good reviews for that reason.
You need to see what is important to you and if any of those things are as mentioned above, you will be very happy there!
I would not move there if:
— you are looking for a very quiet place to live: it is true that the apartments near stairways will have their walls shake when people open/​close those stairway doors and it does slam pretty loud, as well as fire alarms (depending on which unit you are in, you will hear the fire alarms which do ring very very loudly and pretty often)
— natural light is important to you: make sure you are not on the first or second floors and ideally, try to rent a unit that’s located in the back facing west, other units will be fairly dark but if you are not home often then it should not be a problem!
–if you plan on going to the pool often, it does get very crowded during weekends and there are limited chairs and sitting spaces but hey it’s better than not having a pool at all!
**Note the staff is very accommodating and will do their best to help fix any issues you may come across! you just have to have the right approach, like anything else in life!
Overall, good luck finding an apartment with washer and dryer in unit for the prices that Jefferson offers!

If you’re thinking of moving here, don’t. After a year here, I can’t wait to move out.
There’s a long list of problems with this place. At the moment, the worst are the fees they’re charging me and my roommates to move out. Now we have to pay a $ 250 cleaning fee… isn’t that what a security deposit is for? It’s not our fault they ran a promotion of only $ 99 security deposit when we moved in. Now they regret it and they’re trying to bleed us for every dollar they can.
Now they’re telling us we owe them another $ 250. Why? Because they didn’t charge us their «apartment fee» (which apparently covers water use so they can water their grass during a drought? Who knows…) for the first couple months we were here. Which they conveniently forgot to tell us about. Until now. And they’re scrambling to get us to pay it before we leave.
Speaking of, when we notified them we wouldn’t be signing a new lease or continuing on, they questioned us and pressured us into staying – at a huge rent increase of over $ 500 more per month! It’s laughable.
The complex is noisy – if your bedroom has a window to one of the courtyards, be prepared to hear every conversation every person has in any unit near you at all times of the day. If anyone in a neighboring unit so much as raises their voice a little – never mind gets into a screaming match at 1am – you’ll hear every word of it.
Upstairs neighbors walking around normally creates loud thumping noises – it sounds like they’re jumping around playing a Wii game. Pray a dog doesn’t start barking. If your bedroom is near a stairwell, you’ll be woken up by slamming doors at all hours of the day. It’s not just loud, your walls shake.
I’ve been woken up by false fire alarms at least once a month since I moved in. Loud (I cannot emphasize loud enough) fire alarms often go off for twenty or thirty minutes at all times of the day as well.
I can’t even count the amount of times I’ve had to step around dog poop in the halls, dog pee puddles in the elevator, or trash all over the floor near the garbage chutes. Maybe that’s on the community of people who live here, but in over a year, the management team running this place have taken no reasonable measures to help reduce the occurrence of this stuff other than send a few finger-​wagging e-​mails.
The front office group is generally made up of nice, polite people, but the management company that runs this place is the worst. They frequently change available amenities in the middle of your lease (such as reducing the number of parking spots available to each unit), add a system for handling incoming packages that requires you to *pay* them to hold a box for you, they’re slow to respond to service requests, and they will suddenly come up with charges in addition to your rent with little or no explanation as to what you’re paying for or why.
I would not recommend this place to anyone.

My husband and I had a really nice experience living at Jefferson Apartments. What a fabulous area. It’s only a short jog to the beach and just across the park and bike path to the marina. There’s so much to do, without even having to use your car. The parking garage is a nice bonus — and there’s room for guests. The Jefferson has the best outdoor space — lots of grassy fenced areas, it was perfect for our little terriers. Our apartment was spacious with lots of storage area. We decided to move downtown once the area started going up in price. If you want beach living, Jefferson is one of the most reasonable options in a great location.

Good accommodation, most expectations are met.
Pros
— Staffs do their jobs fine
— Complex is generally clean
— Apartment maintenance/​services is prompt
— Easy online payment system
— ParcelPending is great
— Parking is alright, though chances are you will need to park at the 6^th-​7^th floor if u come back after 8pm, or you can get dedicated lot for a acceptable monthly fee
Cons
— Rent is a little pricey
— Fire alarm did falsely went off a few times in my 1.5 year stay, which can cause some annoyance

So when my dad told me he was moving here, I immediately looked it up one Unilocal and read the horrible reviews. I told him to look it up on Unilocal which he did. He then called the office and spoke with someone who answered all of his concerns regarding the reviews. So far none of them have been true. It’s always clean, I’ve never seen any dog messes in the hallways or garbage anywhere. He says that the fire alarm has never gone off in the middle of the night either. Everyone is friendly and if anything needs to be fixed it’s taken care of immediately. The pool area is always clean and filled with people of all ages. He loves living here!

Ive been living at the Jefferson for a year now and I have no plans of leaving any time soon. The office staff is always on top of it! I had an issue with my garbage disposal and the maintenance staff had it fixed the next afternoon. The property is always in great condition, especially considering the ammount of units that are in the complex. The trash area is always tidy, less a few @$$ holes who leave boxes and furniture in the garage occasionally.
As for amenities, the gym has its own key FOB to keep kids and riff raf out. They have this nifty parcel receiving service that allows you to safely pick up packages from a coded lockbox at any time of day. The pool area almost always has people in it, and the BBQ must get cleaned daily.
Not to mention the great general location, I walk to the grocery store, the beach is a 10 min bike ride away and the 90 fwy is right around the corner for when I need to go into LA.

Update: We had to move out earlier than our lease due to Job Relocation: They said there was no way that we would be able to break our lease for this reason and the only way out was to buy out of the lease with 1.5 months rent or choose «Rent Responsible» which they would charge us the prorated days until the apartment is filled again. It was early August which they said is prime moving time so it would be a good bet.
They increased the rent of our old place $ 400 from the last year ($ 2200 to $ 2600) and therefore have NO applications on it. Who the hell is going to pay that much for a 760sq ft 1 bedroom?
I received a bill from the finance people saying we owed the whole remainder of the rent regardless. I called the Jefferson office and they told me I didn’t have to pay it and to wait until they filled our old apartment. I now receive a note that says we will be penalized if we don’t pay it ASAP. No one communicates with each other, no one really knows whats going on, and they’ll do anything to get another dollar (did I mention that even at $ 2,600 rent you have to pay ALL UTILITIES? electric, gas, water, sewer, trash, etc) .
This place is ridiculous. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

I’ve lived here for over 5 years now. There’s honestly no better apartment building in the area for the price. The apartments have top of the line appliances, they’re nice and spacious, pet friendly, and the grounds are gorgeous. Not to mention that they just did a ton of upgrades including the ability to receive packages ²⁴⁄₇ which is great for someone like me who works hours longer than the leasing office is open. Another huge perk is where the building is located. If you like strong cheap drinks Brennan’s Pub is literally 30 yards away. The marina is right in our backyard and there’s a quick and easy cut through to the water and the bike path. The new mall on Maxella is right across the street, Ralphs is a block away, and it’s only a short hike to Abbot Kinney!

I’ve lived at the complex for a year now, and honestly it was an OK experience overall.
The good:
–facilities are relatively nice and maintained, but they are currently all being remodeled except for the pool and gym… So it’s only based on a few months of experience.
–The double pane windows and backstreet Princeton make the overall noise level very low, except for the occasional crazies wandering the street or screaming neighbors.
–Apartment itself was very nice and relatively well made.
–Garage usually had plenty of parking for guests on the top few floors
–maintenance guys usually show up very quickly and are usually good at what they do.
The bad:
–Staff and management are basically useless and and aren’t helpful. Have had to beg and plead for basic things and at one point had to actually get a lawyer involved when they avoided paying for damage done to my car by their painters.
–There were lots of false promises, like full maintenance service for every apartment, changing the gate code and guest access code for the garage, not being punctual on basic services being done around the building and not notifying anyone.
–The fire alarm system is dreadful, constantly going off and lots of false alarms.
–The floors and walls in the complex aren’t always very clean, same with the garage, cosmetic things usually.
–Neighbors on a few occasions were obnoxious and crazy. Screaming in the hallways, luggage and things being thrown out into the hallways, banging and literally banging things.
–To stay in the same apartment they demanded a raise of our rent of 20%, which wasn’t at all reasonable or justifiable so we moved.
Overall, fair experience and if you generally keep to yourself and aren’t huge on community activities or outside things, this complex is good.

Pros: Staff are awesome! Office staff are top notch, always going above and beyond! Maintenance staff are incredibly talented (especially the cleaners, more on them guys below). Location is superb, right next to the 90, always handy to avoid Lincoln haha! Amenities are great, should have used them more often.
Cons: We just received our notice to increase our rent for the next 13 months — a $ 750 a month increase! WTF? Not cool! We’ll be moving elsewhere…
A minority of fellow residents don’t even have an ounce of common courtesy for anyone else. Dog urine in the stairwells is a daily occurrence, sometimes there’s poop in the corridors! Dog owners seldom pick up after their dog in the gated grass areas, literally standing in crap every time I take my dog out at night. You guys suck!
Also a little info on the trash rooms: HUGE shoutout to the cleaning staff for doing their best to keep the rooms tidy. I feel really bad that they have to deal with dirty diapers and an incredible amount of trash themselves. GUESS WHAT PEOPLE? THEY’RE NOT YOUR MAIDS, AND YOU ARE AN ADULT! Put your own trash down the shoot, it’s literally 3 feet from the door! LAZY F#%KERS!
Watch out for the lady who walks her 120lbs Rottweiler along Princeton, OFF LEASH! That’s an accident just waiting to happen!
So TWO STARS it is. Would have been four… Minus 1 for the rent increase, and minus 1 for the minority of filthy residents!

Don’t let the location and beautiful apartments fool you into thinking you should live here… that’s what happened to me.
I have lived here since end of July 2014, my lease isn’t up until the end of September because I signed a 14 month lease… boy do i regret that! I cannot wait to move out of here.
Here are a few of the reasons I hate living here:
–My boyfriend’s bike has been stolen (we had a good U-​lock)
–Our car was broken into (it was locked and has an alarm setup)
–We once accidentally locked ourselves out of our apartment at night. I called the after hours office line, for them to tell me that they do not offer lock-​out services.
–I read Unilocal reviews about the fire alarms always going off, I asked them about this before moving in, they said it was fixed, LIES. They have gone off 3 times since living there and it is very unpleasant.
–The stairwells are SO FILTHY — its embarrassing.
–They took weeks to paint the exterior of the building when they said it would only take a weekend.
–Their package receiving system SUCKS. You can only pick up a package during office hours, which are the hours of work. So i can only get my mail on the weekends… And when I do go in to get my package its like they are trying to find a needle in a haystack
–The entry gate for parking is often broken
This place is so incredibly expensive — you might as well be paying a mortgage. How on earth do I pay so much to live here and not get lock out services? How do I pay so much to live here to not have proper security in the parking garage? REALY!?! I have seen MANY bikes stolen or parts stolen. How do I pay so much to live here, and the stairwells are so dirty and smell awful — do they ever clean them!?!
It is definitely NOT worth the amount of money they take from you each month for rent. RIDICULOUS.

I moved into the Jefferson about a year ago and I’m so happy to call this my home. The building is located in a great area, walking distance to shops, stores, bars, etc. From what I understand, the building is under new management and I finally see small changes being made. In the single year I have been here, there has been a serious turn around of leasing agents. I am happy to say that Kristen, one of the new leasing agents, was extremely helpful in reviewing my UDR bill with me last week. Although there were people waiting to also be helped, she was patient, thorough, and extremely informative to need. Kristin is a definite keeper to the UDR family.
This update is based on the management. Juan Carlos the manager takes week to reply to an email… An EMAIL!!! It took him 3 weeks to once respond to my email, and then still, the problem doesn’t get resolved. Resident has been parking illegally for 6 months, 7 emails later, and this car has yet to be towed. Oh wait, they put a sign that says «no parking» which has done NOTHING! I’m out of here as soon as my lease is up.

I would give Jefferson 4 stars for the slight inconvenience the ongoing building renovations have caused (talk about a first-​world complaint right??), but I have to give 5 for the resident services. Beyond beautiful units and a great, well-​kept facility & grounds in general, my expectations were so far exceeded by the kind and knowledgable staff. There’s a lovely young woman in particular (Kristin Shafer) who is just very accommodating and makes every interaction pleasant. She is always smiling, friendly and warm. If I didn’t feel like a creep asking, I’d take her out for drinks and become her best friend… she totally gives the place an even more homey feel and makes everyone comfortable!
Aside from our personal experience here, the location is fantastic and within walking & biking distance of so many bars /​restaurants and the beach! It’s tucked away off of busy Lincoln Blvd., so it feels private and secluded, but still has super close access to the major avenues & arteries, 90, 10 and 405. Tough to beat!
I am a young lady who sometimes works late and I have never felt unsafe here. We live in LA, it’s a densely populated city and it’s impossible to find a place that doesn’t have the occasional mishap. It’s certainly no penitentiary, so if you prefer maximum security, I suggest building an underground shelter in the middle of the desert or hiring a body guard.
Rent goes up with the market, if you want to live in a prime neighborhood, you’d be hard-​pressed to find a rent stabilized building with around-​the-​clock management in one of the most desired areas in all of Los Angeles. If you find it, please let me know and I’ll consider leaving…
Simply the best!

I’ve lived here for a couple of years now, and i’m so glad to say that this place is finally being run the its suppose to be. In the past, all the issues you read about were due to lack of management. I have first experience with this at the Jefferson. All that has change now.(no bs) The new management here has turn this place around completely, from the security aspect threw the landscape, and I am very grateful for that. That being said if you are looking for great place to live in the marina, this is totally it.
Again I want to thank Jordan Gullo the property manager for the way he turned this place into great place to live.

We lived here for 3.5 years, so I feel very qualified to make the following observations about this community:
PROS:
–Unit itself was great. Loved the space, layout, storage, washer/​dryer.
–Lots of green space.
–The courtyard where our apartment was located was, for the most part, quiet.
–Great location next to the bike path and close to many restaurants, grocery stores, marina.
–Service requests were promptly taken care of, and the maintenance guys and cleaning crew were very nice.
CONS:
–TERRIBLE NEIGHBORS. There was no sense of community and no one cared if they inconvenienced other residents. Someone on our floor constantly left dirty diapers in the trash room. Not only did they not put their trash down the chute, they didn’t even put it in a bag. So the entire trash room smelled like poop! And so much dog poop all over the grounds even when there are pet waste stations every 20 feet that provided bags! I also think that our next door neighbor was a drug dealer because there were always sketchy dudes hanging out outside our apartment waiting for something.
–FIRE ALARMS. They went off the entire 3.5 years we were there, at all hours of the day. They went off at 5 am on the day we moved out, and that was our divine sign that it was definitely the right decision to leave.
–THEFTS. Our bike was stolen from the garage, and no one in the leasing office cared. They said they could only release the surveillance video if the police requested it. So I doubt there was any video. Also saw smashed car windows in the parking garage.
–NEW STAFF IN OFFICE EVERY 3 MONTHS. I can count on my 2 hands the number of times the manager changed in the time we were here. Which means that no one ever knew what was going on.
–RENT INCREASES. Our rent went up by $ 150 each year that we were there.
–UNASSIGNED PARKING. We would never leave the apartment after we got home from work for fear that we wouldn’t find a parking space when we came home.
–ONLY ONE WAY IN. All the surrounding streets are blocked off by gates, presumably so that us apartment dwellers can’t go through the streets where the million dollar houses are located. The light to turn onto Lincoln can take 3 – 5 minutes to turn green. Also, making a left back into the complex from Lincoln is a nightmare, and I think Macaulay Culkin’s sister was killed at that intersection a few years ago while walking. Dangerous.
All in all, though we loved our apartment itself, the cons definitely outweighed the pros, and we are so glad to be outta there.

CRIME IN THIS COMMUNITY: ALLOWED THROUGH THROUGH MANAGEMENT INACTION OR RESISTANCE TO TENANTS + LACK OF PROPER SECURITY.
1) The fire alarms going off at all hours including 12, 1, 3, 5 am is a true occurrence. It happens monthly. still not fixed.
2) According to neighbors a series of thefts and break-​ins in the area have been occurring, bikes taken etc. And management has not stepped up or done anything with the security on property. In fact not even a broad announcements has been made.
3) Despite all this buildings ‘security’ my CAR WAS STOLEN from inside the gated parking lot — Along with others in the area. Again, it was locked, in the parking garage. There are video camera’s that should be able to help in this case but the management refused to grant access until the police got involved. Conveniently enough 4 days later, the hard drive is corrupted and shows no video. — Coincidence? Hmm. Are people here in on it? Time is super critical, why don’t they want to help? All good questions.
Up until this critical point and to their credit there have been a couple individuals that have been very friendly and helpful in the office. But that pails in comparison to the overall attitude of management and how they treat their tenants.
Protect yourself if you have respect for your possessions.
