MAN. .. homeownership can be hard some times.
Don’t get me wrong…
Home ownership has its rewards — but it can be soooo difficult finding reputable, reliable competent people for renovations and repairs.
I had a guy — NOT Emerson Home Services — put a roof on my existing deck nearly six months ago and it leaked from day one. I iniitially interviewed several contractors and Emerson is one of the people I interviewed. While Emerson’s guy (Blake Baggett) was personable, charming and most importantly, knowledgeable. He seemed like a good, honest guy — and the company had a good BBB rating and good ratings on Kudzu — but the cost was just outside my budget.
Also — FYI — the company I chose to use was NOT the cheapest — but they gave me a detailed estimate, references, contractor license # — at a pretty affordable price. They allowed me to pay Home Depot directly for materials, the balance (labor) upon completion of job. Also — they actually showed up on the day promised to start the job — unlike the two other contractors that had scheduled previously!!!
But I digress — this is a review for Emerson — not that other guy. (I’ll post a separate review for them later.)
Recently — I spoke to Emerson’s salesman again (the aforementioned Blake Baggett) and he came out and gave me a pretty reasonable estimate to repair /​replace the horrible job the initial contractor did. I was super impressed — said he would be able to salvage some of the materials used and he even went so far as to say I wouldn’t have to pay a dime until both 1) AFTER the work had been done — 2) AFTER we’d experienced some rainstorms to verify that the structure was leak-​free. He emailed the estimate — and I emailed him back asking that he include the details he’d given verbally and also include the payment terms. He said he would — and yet its been over 2 months and each time i call him to request the amended estimate — he either flat out ignores me or has an excuse as to why he hasn’t sent over the new estimate. (Yes — two months — apparently I’m a glutton for punishment.)
I don’t know if he’s uncomfortable putting the promised information in writing or if he’s ‘punishing’ me for not using his company the first time around — but I found the whole experience frustrating and somewhat disturbing. Yes — I made a mistake by choosing a horrible contractor the first time around — but if he had an issue — he should have just refused to come out to give me the estimate the second time. Or maybe — I’m a jaded butthole and he’s really just super, super busy. I’m done stalking him, though. Lol.
Argh.
Oh well. .. the search is back on for a competent roofer.
