I take people here often as I can always count on a very satisfying meal and well executed cocktails. Hard to describe the atmosphere – somewhere between a pub and fine dining. The food certainly has some sophistication but they also have many pub standards like burgers and pizza that my daughter loves. And speaking of kids, this place is family and kid friendly without feeing like a «family restaurant» and I mean that in a good way. Outdoor seating when the weather is nice. Be sure to try the ahi tuna poke, burgers, fish tacos, and pizza that is a hit with my 5 yo. A Marblehead institution that serves sophisticated yet unpretentious food in a wonderful atmosphere.

My wife and I enjoyed another date night at this great little bistro. We went early and were delighted to see all the kids, especially very young ones, sharing some quality time with their parents. As grandparents it’s nice to see a happy face nearby. The food and service, as always, were excellent. The kids made it feel like home.

This is my go-​to spot for drinks and a bite, family dinners and take-​out. The owners nailed it when it comes down to the perfect melding of wonderful food, wine and cocktails; reasonable prices; excellent service; and just enough familiar faces to make it fun. I never want to go anywhere else!

Classic American tavern serving fresh seafood, burgers and ribs. Nice starters choices: Thai Chicken Wraps, Ahi Tuna Poke, BBQ Ribs, grilled mushrooms. The Spaghetti Bolognese is pretty darn good. All the pizza is delicious — especially the BBQ Chicken. The Jack Tar Burger ROCKS with Vermont Cheddar, smoked bacon and beer braised onions. Seafood specials are superb. Nice setting down below the Muffin Shop in the Crosby’s parking lot. Oh and they have $ 5.00 whole pizzas for every night from 5pm to 7pm! And kids eat free on Sundays!

Going to go back again tonight. The food was incredible! The price is also reasonable. I had the fish tacos that were so delicious and their special beer menu paired nicely with our meal. One of us had their pizza and that was yummy as I shared a bite. The waitress staff was so friendly and attentive. I highly recommend. And the best part is they take reservations so no waiting in line likes some of the other restaurants in that area. Ask for Becca for your server. She’s so polite and attentive.

I’ve come here in the past and had really good if slightly overpriced food. Atmosphere is nice. But recently they’ve removed almost every vegetarian option from their menu. The remaining ones, which I ordered, were so so bad… don’t order the black bean burger, it’s like chewing through a giant cotton ball.
The Jack Tar salad is pretty good though.

The food here was delicious. The $ 5 pizza between 5−7pm was excellent. cooked to perfection! The steak tips were amazing. Was a little upset there wasn’t a chicken dish besides wings but the service made up for it. Would definitely return to this little gem.

We really enjoyed our visit. Very comfortable/​laid back ambiance that would be equally great for a date night or night with the family. I love that the food quality is so varied/​delicious for somewhere that is also family friendly. The variety is great & there is surely something for everyone!

This restaurant has character. It is absolutely charming with its New England — Old World ambience. I love cavernous restaurants, they feel cozy to me. Perhaps that’s due to happy memories from my cavewoman days. Whatever the reason, places like this are my ‘comfort food’ of interior design.
The meal was over-​the-​top delicious. Our waitress was darling and attentive. It was a busy night but she managed to make sure we were set. We loved everything about this restaurant! Next time we’re in Marblehead we will visit them again.

It’s been 2 weeks since I had a horrible evening here. As we were leaving, I left a message for the owner to call, stating I wanted to talk about the sub-​standard service.
No one has bothered to contact me. That certainly says a lot about their customer-​service orientation.
Save yourself the time and trouble. Go someplace that values your business.

Easily the best restaurant in Marblehead. If your visiting or a townie, PLEASE stop by here. You will always be pleased with the Dayboat Scallops, goat cheese pizza, and «Chapin» style wings. Fun cozy atmosphere with extremely friendly staff. I always suggest Jack Tar to anyone who is looking for some DELICIOUS food at very reasonable prices.

This is a great place. The food is very good and the staff is extremely nice. The only reason I gave it four stars is because the bar area is a little like a basement, but I guess that’s the charm in it :)

I’ve never had a bad meal here, and yet again they’ve managed to impress me; one taste, and you can tell Jack-​Tar is using premium ingredients!
Service is great, and the atmosphere is unique among other restaurants I’ve visited.
Beer selection is phenomenal! Tonight I had a Kimmie, the Yink, and the Holy Goze, which was on special. I was in San Francisco last week and was sadly forced to skip over the Goze as a result of having overloaded myself a tad on some other beers– SO HAPPY I could finally have it, and it WAS quite good.
Tonight I had the grilled scallops, and WHAT a triumph– I simply cannot wait to have it again. The spinach was amazing by itself, and I would have eaten an entire plate of it, but they managed to put some great risotto and tasty grilled scallops on there too, which I proceeded to eat the hell out of.
Great job! A highlight to every Marblehead experience!

WOW! We were really impressed with this place. We stayed in Marblehead during a weekend getaway recently, and while walking around trying to determine where to eat, I turned to Unilocal and found Jack-​Tar. The ribs were so perfectly cooked that they literally melted off the bone and into your mouth. Literally the best ribs we’ve ever had — and in MA?! My boyfriend talked about the ribs our entire weekend. By far the best meal we had on our weekend. We were thankful that we were able to walk in and be seated too as the place was jam packed and we didn’t have a reservation. I highly recommend making a reservation if you go in on the weekend.

best local joint we could ask for. owners and staff are awesome. Alot of locals say they wont go back because of how the food was years ago with the previous owners, Im telling you, GO TRY IT.
Fav food items-​ribs, blue cheese pancetta pizza, spicy black bean burger, chicken veggie lettuce wraps, fish tacos.
Always have great beers on tap and wine list is nice. Not to mention the changing infused liquor options for drinks.
Some people miss the location because its a tad hidden. behind muffin shop.
