History

Established in 1924.

Herbert & Norman Woolley, immigrated to New Jersey from New York. They found a spacious site on Burnett Avenue where the Woolley Coal Company opened its doors, providing coal, ice and wood to local homeowners. Their father Nephi Woolley-​although busy with his own buiness — sometimes came out to help. When the Depression hit, local businesses pulled together. Herb and Norman used their horses to help dig out cellars for homes being built. They extended credit to families who needed it and in return their customers responded with an unfailing consumer loyalty. By the end of World War II, the company had more than doubled in size, and the name was changed to the Woolley Fuel Company. Norm’s son, Norm Jr. joined his Dad and uncle in 1954; and in the 1990’s, Norm E. Woolley entered the family business. In 2008 Woolley Fuel became the first Diesel Station in New Jersey to carry Biodiesel. The oldest business in Maplewood, Woolley Fuel continues to offer personal service to its customers.

Ed P and Joe F came out to the house to help fix our air conditioner. After a hot weekend, Ed arrived at the scheduled time, asked sufficient questions to pinpoint the problem and began implementing a solution. When he realized he didn’t have a unique, specific part, he called in help. Joe arrived quickly and helped repair a PVC pipe which had to be cut to allow us access to the filter. They coupled the PVC pipe together so we can now replace the filter regularly with ease saving time and money. They provided an efficient solution in a timely fashion. Great job.

There aren’t enough good things to say about Woolley. Their people are the best! They are skilled, they are competent and most of all HONEST! My basement almost had a major disaster, having the already ancient hot water heater leak. Art D called his team, Dave showed up a short time later & 3 hours later it is fixed. The basement is clean of any residual debris after their work & everything was explained to me in a way I could understand. I am CONFIDENT the job was done right.
What’s nice is, the people who show up are people you know you will see in your home the next time you need routine service, so when they show up should you have an issue, it’s not some guy you don’t know trying to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge.

New to the area and homeownership, we took our time reviewing the service, pricing, and contracts of five companies. The difference came down to this: The others who did not get our service were either: A) 3x the price for the same scope, B) An hour late with no call, C) 3 weeks for a quote that was difficult to read and 2 weeks to review the quote. With Woolley, we discovered a company infrastructure with a human voice. When the weather is sub-​zero and many people are without heat, it may be difficult to schedule a routine call, and that’s because they are giving those in need their undivided attention. Take a close look at their pricing, and a close look at their service contract, then witness their handy work; it is thoughtful and smart. We’ve had routine maintenance, installations, upgrades, complex quotes, and emergencies; all handled professionally in a timely manner, with a fair amount of «above and beyond the call of duty» thrown in for good measure. With whomever you end up going with, you deserve quality work. They’ve set the bar for what I now expect from a service vendor. JW

To the rescue again, I had no heat this morning, and Art P. was here in under 2 hours. He is very friendly, and knowledgable. Woolley is always there, when you need them. The weekend of the blizzard of 2016, I had no heat, and they came out to the house, in 29″ of snow.

I cannot say enough great things about Craig! He came out just two days after a massive blizzard and was incredibly helpful, took the time to explain what was going on with our very old furnace, and went above and beyond to make sure everything was in working order before leaving. He arrived right on time and even called to let me know he was on his way, which sounds like a small thing but really makes a difference when you are planning your morning. I also have nothing but wonderful things to say about the entire Woolley team! We are new homeowners and have loads of questions and everyone we have talked to (Frank especially!) has been patient and responsive.

Excellent service from initial call to Stephanie to Ed P who came on time troubleshooter the issue with our gas furnace. Ultimately it needed a new motherboard. Heat is back on. We are warm and happy. Thanks Ed. Would highly recommend Woolley Home.

Price was high for the amount of work, but this is not a David issue. I would suggest getting additional quotes from other companies in addition to Woolley as $ 450 for a pipe fitting that took 30 minutes seems excessive.

Ed arrived early and went right to work on our oil-​fired boiler, which had stopped working sometime during the night. Apparently, the fuel line that feeds the oil into the combustion chamber had clogged. Ed was thorough, checking that each part of the boiler was working before putting everything back together and even vacuuming the bit of dust and rust that came off our crusty boiler. Best of all, it was included in our Gold Plan, as part of the annual boiler maintenance we had done. Thanks!

My family has been using Woolley Fuel for over 20 years. They are the most reliable and friendly company around. Ed P has been our tech since the beginning and always makes sure our system is running correctly. We just had him out to do a scheduled cleaning when he found an important part was not working. He right away checked to see if he had the part in stock, ran back to the office to pick it up and changed the broken part in no time. I highly recommend Woolley Fuel and Ed P!

My daughter just bought a new home and I was asked to wait for Woolley to come for a service call. I can’t say enough about Ed from Woollley! He was so helpful with every question asked.
He explained everything that needed to be done and assured me that he was only a call away.

I called on Monday morning for furnace service, I didn’t get a call back until Wednesday 4:30. I missed Todd’s call so I called right back (1min.)
and went to his voicemail. I left message Wed., Thurs and Friday but no return call. What horrible service. Don’t bother here! I called Korn Plumbing today, Friday and they will be here tomorrow morning.
90 years? Of what, crappy customer service? Go elsewhere people.

So I dont usually leave reviews but Art D came to my house after being visited by the «Service Professionals» from Union NJ. The other companies told me i needed 1000 dollars in repairs, when I refused to do that and told them i wanted more estimates, I was charged 100 dollars for his «time».
Art came in and spent literally 2 hours to diagonose the problem. He tested all elements of the system, and even laser measured the temp coming from the outlets. At the end of the day it seemed to just be that the condenser needed to be cleaned, a simple wash with the hose did it!!!

Chuck W from Woolley is amazing! He’s the hero of our family right now. He came and fixed out boiler after two days without heat.
A technician from PSG&E had misdiagnosed the problem as a cracked boiler; but Chuck did a very diligent process of elimination to identify the true root cause (a broken sensor and damper). He solved the problem at a fraction of the cost of a new boiler.
Chuck was helpful, pleasant, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend him and Woolley for heating repairs.
