Sorelle Tailor Shop

I had two pairs of slacks tailored and had gone in for measurements for a coat and sports jacket. Good work on the slacks, but I do not use this tailor anymore because my time had been wasted on multiple occassions where I had gone to pick up my coat and jacket at the agreed dates but the items were not prepared. After two failed pick ups, I took my unfinished garments and went to another tailor. It’s a disorganized operation, but the sisters are both very friendly and the work that was actually completed was good.

Just picked up blazer that needs the sleeves shortened. Not very happy, at all!
I work in the area and walked by this place one day, I was ecstatic to see a tailor in midtown, close by my office. This was a dingy looking place, but again, we’re in the garment district and I wasn’t expecting much. Everything here is either Flashy and expensive or dingy and old enough to know it can stand the test of time.
I was greeted by an older woman who had me try on jacket and insisted the length of sleeves needed to be longer than I would have liked. Either way, we came to an agreement to do it my way and she marked the cuffs where I thought was appropriate.
Well I picked it up today and the line she marked was still there, about three quarters of an inch above the end of sleeve. WTF?!
Then she asked for fifty bucks in cash! I was expecting maybe $ 30.
Not happy. Thanks Unilocal for not allowing zero stars. I’d rather have given a single Chinese throwing star!

The place is dirty, unorganized, and very unprofessional.
I have never had worse experience with any other business.
The place is run by very disonest peolple. The worst eerience ever.

One time customer, never returning. I had the back and sides taken in on a suit jacket and a sports jacket. $ 85 per jacket is too much, in my opinion, although the sewing work was good. There was a small mark on the lapel of one of the jackets when I picked it up – looked like the brush of a blue ballpoint pen. It’s extremely unlikely I dropped the jacket off that way; it was brand new from the store. I would have been satisfied if they offered to pay for the dry cleaning, but they didn’t.

Unthrilled. I’ve now had to take two shirts back to them twice– and today will mark a THIRD visit for one shirt– because they rush their work. (simple shoulder strap fix, which I paid $ 15 for, which didn’t work and then I had to pay ANOTHER $ 10 for their mistake, and now I have to take one shirt back again because their last-​ditch effort, a hook-​and-​eye, fell apart immediately.)
It’s too bad, they are located really close to me, and they did an okay job with other items I’ve brought in. But I don’t understand why I keep having to pony up cash for re-​dos and fixes — I should pay once, and it should be done right, that’s the way every other tailor I’ve used works…
Edited to add: after bringing a shirt that should have been an INCREDIBLY easy fix (just add a snap! this was the third time they hadn’t done the work right!) they offered to make it right– and then weren’t ready on time. I took my shirt and left– life’s too short for bad service!

So here’s the backstory on this one: When I ordered a bridesmaid dress online, I realized I must either be very disproportionate or not a great fit for the dress because I was supposed to order a size 4 according to the bust, a size 2 according to the hips, and a size 8 according to the waist. I figured I didn’t want to end up with something too small, so I ended up ordering a size 8. When the dress came, it was a COMPLETE disaster. The thing was basically 4 sizes too big for me and slid off of me when I tried to put it on. It looked absolutely ridiculous

So anyway, that’s what brought me here. There wasn’t enough time before the wedding to return the dress and get another one custom made. I obviously had to get the dress altered but didn’t want to spend a fortune doing so. However, it was a complicated job because the entire dress basically had to be restructured and resewn. I called up between 5 – 10 places to get a quote on how much the job would be and ended up bringing the dress to several different places in the Midtown area to get quotes. The prices I was quoted by other businesses was astonishingly high — most places wanted me to pay ~$ 150 to get the bridesmaid dress altered.
Then I went to Sorelle. The ladies at Sorelle were super sweet, friendly and kind. After I told them my story, they clucked their toungues and laughed along with me, then gave me the best prices I had heard both in person and over the phone. They had a very quick turn around time and did a great job altering the dress. Thank you Sorelle — you are a complete life saver!

Incredibly dishonest and rude. Would NOT recommend. They make up prices to tell you based on what they feel like when you walk in. If you don’t ask them upfront, they’ll tack on random charges and make up reasons why you should be shelling out extra cash. They quoted me $ 120 to tailor a dress. What I didn’t understand was when I asked the lady to break down the charges for me, she proceeded to then get mad at me for «asking too many questions» and «wasting her time» ??? I’m not sure how they think businesses should be run, but I wasn’t aware customers were just supposed to blindly be ripped off and accept it without question. Will not be going back to them ever.

They are an excellent tailor. They have altered all of my Barneys and J-​Crew suits. I have had consistently great results here.

) alas, word has gotten out and when I called in November I was told they weren’t accepting any garments until January. January?! I was boxed out of my tried and true spot.
Since Sorelle was relatively walking distance from my office (albeit not a pretty walk or area) I decided to drop a handful of my belongings into their trusted hands. Pants to be hemmed, zippers to be fixed, elastic waist band and a coat lining all in need of repair.
I picked up my items 3 weeks later and while most of the items were repaired in good condition (minus a cuff that was supposed to be tacked) my overall experience was tainted by their customer service. Unfortunately there was a major break down of communication and several of my items were separated from my pile. I returned to my office to find two pairs of pants missing and when I called to explain, there was confusion and a bit of a language barrier. They wanted me to come in to identify the pants because they didn’t know which one. Weeks later, to my own fault for not taking full inventory of my belongings, I realized a vintage dress was missing. When I called to explain this the response was «oh yes».
I appreciate their handiwork (why I considered 2 stars over 1 star) but I don’t know if I’d go back again in the future after all the confusion. Similar to Joel R’s review I believe they’re very disorganized.
They also normally expect a deposit on their work which I understand for their business but after my experience I don’t believe in paying for the work until you’ve seen all the results (and ALL of your items are returned to you)

Don’t let the shop’s décor scare you off. I’ve had pants hemmed, suit jackets pulled in, jacket liners repaired and torn pants repaired. Everything was done with quality workmanship and was ready when promised.

I went here to get my suit and blazer altered. The prices were definitely on the average to expensive side. My suit needed the sleeves lengthened and my pants needed to be shortened– nothing too complicated. My blazer just did not fit properly. I showed the ladies in the shop how it did not fit me properly and how this issue was my main concern regarding the blazer.
When I came back for the two items, my suit was fine, but the issue with my blazer had not been addressed. Instead, the ladies made minor alterations to the silhouette. When I raised this issue to the ladies in the shop, they said there was nothing to be done and the reason it did not fit was due to a flaw in the construction of the blazer.
Well that’s great! Why wasn’t I told about this when I first came in. Instead, I was told after they worked on it and charged me 60 dollars for their work. Now I basically have a blazer that fits just as badly as the one I first brought into the shop. Beware when visiting.

Super duper expensive. I went twice and was overcharged both times. Shorten straps on a dress cost almost $ 100. At a regular dry cleaner it would cost no more than $ 20. There are plenty of other better alteration shops. Do not go here.

I decided to check this place out because of it «reasonable» prices stated by other reviewers. I went in looking for a simple 4-​stich taper on some cheap dockers and the lady quoted me at $ 90!
I know it’s NYFW and I’m sure they’re busy but that is an insane price. And she even tried to justify it.
I’m sure the quality of their work is good but for that price I might as well dust of my grandmothers sowing machine and do the work myself.

I’ve had several items altered here, now, and am always very satisfied. I had significant modifications done to a men’s suit, and they nailed it on the first time around. I’ve also had men’s jeans and dress shirts altered here, and these turned out good, as well.
The ladies at the shop are very nice and easy to work with, and the prices also seem very reasonable. The only drawback can be turn-​around time for certain types of items, but I don’t know that this is out of the ordinary.

I had such a lovely experience working with Mary at Sorelle on my wedding gown! I brought in a very complicated, pouffy, multi-​layered but fitted organza number, and she worked within a very short timeline to ensure that the final product met my satisfaction. When it didn’t fit quite as expected the first time I went back, she went right back to work and had it fixed to perfection within two days. I really enjoyed my interactions with them and in the end, while it wasn’t cheap (due to the complexity of the fabric layers, I was told), when I picked it up on a Sunday afternoon, I was thrilled. Mary did a beautiful job and they were both so nice — I would absolutely go back for whatever tailoring I need!

A friend suggested i go here, the place was like a typical tailor shop. The ladies were nice. sorta. I havent really had that many work-​slacks hemmed before and i normally wear flats so she said she’d hem accordingly, i asked for a little longer but she was a little scary so i just agreed to what she said… i went to pick up my slacks a few days later and she tried giving me the wrong pairs… odd. (her accent makes it hard for me to understand what she’s saying.) i got my pants back, they seemed ok but the shop was closing so i just tried them on and left. the next day when i wore them to work i noticed they were tooooooooo short. it rides above my ankles when i sit down, very unseemly. I called to ask if she kept some of the fabric and if she could make ti longer. perhaps it was just the way she talks but she started b-​cing at me. i did not appreciate it… i explained that i wasnt upset and that she shouldnt be either… but she kept being a b– so. im never going here again… miscommunication and scary scary lady. not ok.

This place was great in all the ways that matter — fast service, good quality work, and reasonable prices.
I got several pairs of pants hemmed. I was nervous at first, because she lady who helped me to two seconds to mark the length. But I picked up my pants 3 hours after dropping them off and they looked great — the hems are neat and were done exactly as I asked. They charge $ 13 per pair of pants, which is much cheaper than the other places I’ve tried in Hell’s Kitchen. I will definitely be bringing my business back.

I usually expect tailors, cobblers, etc., to be a *little* rude and surly. I mean, people are telling you what to do all day, you’re working with smelly old shoes and coats, yeah, it can suck. So I don’t usually mind a little curtness. But the service here was so beyond rude it actually kind of veered into the hilarious.
I had called to ask about altering a winter parka but was specifically told I had to bring the garment into the store before they could quote me a price, etc. Fine, no problem.
But when I got to the store and decided not to use their services (I thought the woman was vague about whether or not she could actually do the alterations I wanted, yet she still rudely demanded the whole $ 50 upfront; also she wanted to charge $ 30 per pocket to repair the zippers, which I thought was steep) the woman I was speaking with literally started bitching me out for «wasting her time.» She went nuts, telling me that if I knew I didn’t want the work done I shouldn’t have come to her store.
I replied, «Um, you *told* me to come in. If anything you wasted *my* time — I brought this all the way from Brooklyn!» And then she said (and this is my favorite): «You should have thought of that before you left the house!»
Amazing. If you like to pretend you’re in a Seinfeld re-​run, the uproariously bad customer service here should be right up your alley. No coat for you!

i stumbled upon this tailor years ago through citysearch and have been frequenting them ever since. over the course of the years, they have hemmed numerous pants, kept the original hem on jeans and lowered the waist line on a skirt. basically anything i would need a good tailor to do…
it’s also walking distance from soiffer haskin… so after the hugo boss sale, they completely redid the suit jacket for the hubby.
if i could have given a half star, the only downside would be that they are SO good that they can be quite busy…
but as the hubby so aptly put it…
«they did a really good job with my suit. why would i take the risk and go somewhere else?»

Didja ever have a favorite coat? Well, I have one and the liner was ripped into shreds. I knew not to put anything into my left pocket or made sure my arm didn’t go into my right sleeve too fast or I would hear awful ripping sounds.
Well I was walking down 8^th ave and I saw the Sorelle Tailor Shop sign off 36^th st. (The only tailor sign I’ve seen in the garment district?)
I walk in and I see two of the sweetest bubbies doing their thing like sewing buttons, fixing sweater pulls and of course adding new linings to favorite jackets.
The lil bubbie takes my favorite coat and tells me to come back in two weeks.
Well, I let 10 days go past my two week deadline and sure enough the bubbies called my cell phone and said to me: pick up your coat mister!
I just got it back today, the workmanship on this lining is of high quality. This is an art that was lost long ago.
