Business Owner

Dr. Rome is a licensed Physical Therapist with a Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from George Washington University where he received his BS in Exercise and Sport Science. He went on to attend Duke University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and was awarded his Doctorate of Physical Therapy.

Dr. Rome is a board certified orthopedic specialist, a certified vestibular specialist, and a Maitland trained orthopedic manual therapist. Dr. Rome also specializes in the treatment of orthopedic and spinal injuries, lower extremity evaluation and orthotic fabrication, post operative rehab, as well as postural conditions contributing to chronic headaches.

I broke my ankle in November 2016 and, after many weeks of immobilization, I needed physical therapy. Just by luck I found Equilibrium, and I am so glad I did! My regular weekly appointments with Samantha Savit were extremely helpful and rewarding; when I arrived in January I could barely walk, but by the time of my last visit in May I was literally «back on my feet.»
The facility is clean, bright, and state-​of-​the-​art equipped. Visits are luxuriously long at 45 minutes, compared to some places that hustle you out in a half-​hour. Everyone who works there is friendly and helpful. They all worked very hard at getting me the maximum number of visits from my insurance company to make sure that I would recover and regain my mobility.
Samantha is a true professional; she is thoughtful, diligent, charming, kind, and just really good at what she does. She is the real deal! I am convinced that I would still be hobbling through the streets of Manhattan without her attentive and expert care.
In summary, I send my sincere gratitude to the management and the entire staff of Equilibrium for their competence and excellent service.

Everyone at Equilibrium PT has done a great job in helping me overcome my sprained ankle quickly and effectively.
Matt Rome did a wonderful job doing hands on work on my ankle and giving me exercises to work on a home. His PT tech, Matt Cornell, would lead me through exercises after my time with Matt Rome and he was great to work with as well.
This is a great studio, with a courteous and professional staff, that works to get you active again quickly. I cant recommend it highly enough.

I have been to a lot of physical therapists over the years and Equilibrium is certainly outstanding. In addition to sheer competence, I’m especially appreciative of the personal attention I get there. I’ve been to too many places where the service is strictly transactional — I’m treated pretty much like a number and I have often been one of three or four people the therapist is treating at the same time. In addition, they are flexible in scheduling and, in general, considerate of my needs. A terrific place!

I visited Equilibrium PT on the recommendation of my husband. He has used Matt Rome’s services over the years for should and back injuries, and I visited for a running-​related knee injury.
Matt was very helpful, personable, and knowledgable. The rest of the staff were friendly and flexible. I love that I can book and change appointments via email. It makes scheduling a breeze especially during the work day.
My pain was gone after just a few visits and I’m able to follow up at home with a specific set of specialized strengthening exercises. Over all, 4 visits was all it took keep me cruising down the road. I’m running a half marathon this coming weekend and I’ve been able to successfully train without a hitch.

I’ve been going to Equilibrium since it opened several years ago, had been going to another Physical Therapist before then. The physical therapists there give more focused and individualized therapy to patients, more than any other PT facility I’ve been to before. They are extremely accommodating to fit patients schedules and have state of the art training equipment.
My favorite piece of equipment is the Anti Gravity treadmill. It helped get back to running at a gradual pace by using state of the art technology to reduce body weight while learning how to run again.
Recommend for anyone needing PT on Shoulders, Knees or Ankles!

I do not normally write on-​line reviews but I joined Unilocal specifically so that I could recommend Equilibrium. Having hurt my knee badly resulting in acute patellar tendinitis. I was left with a list of maybe fifty physical therapy choices from my orthopedist – how in the world to choose? But a friend highly recommended Equilibrium and so I signed on with them. I have now been going for several weeks, and I can only say that in my experience – and from what I see there around me – the care is excellent. I have been lucky enough to work with Matt Rome – he is professional, knowledgeable, and caring – and, most important, my knee is greatly improved.
I would add that it distressed me to read a very negative review from a former client that mainly had to do with insurance issues. She should take that up with her insurance company and not let her anger spill over onto Equilibrium.

I’ve never felt compelled to write a negative review for a healthcare-​related business, but I’ve never had as awful of an experience as I did at Equilibrium Physical Therapy.
For a business that ostensibly exists to help heal people who are in pain, I have to say that I did not feel well cared for either with the administration of my account or with the physical therapist.
As far as my account, they overcharged my credit card on file and did not get my insurance pre-​approved in time for my appointment, although they said that they would handle it.
For whatever it’s worth, I rarely saw any other patients at Equilibrium, even though I was there at what should have been peak times. They have a long list of therapists listed on their website, two large studios and multiple treatment rooms, but the place was almost always empty. It never seemed like the thriving business that the handful of positive reviews here would have you believe it is, and that should have been a red flag to me from the beginning. Lesson learned.
When my treatment ended here, I was still in physical pain. I wish I had not wasted my money and time here. In the future, I’ll ask friends for personal recommendations for any healthcare-​related providers.

I started going to Equilibrium after being referred by my doctor to Steve Lavender. I have Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Steve is one of the few PT’s that have an expertise in addressing the challenges specific to my condition.
I’m very happy with the level of care that I’ve been receiving. Initially, Steve was in constant contact with my doctor so he can coordinate my treatment and needs. Before we even started treatment he spent a great deal of time inquiring about my needs and expectations. To my surprise, he then told me what his expectations were and they far exceeded mine!
I have been seeing him for a couple of months now and I am thus far quite satisfied. No miracles here (MS is an incurable disease) but my level of care is superb. I’ve already been pushed and received benefits I haven’t experienced in years. Steve is a caring professional with outstanding «bedside manner». I strongly recommend him.

I got a very positive referral to Matt Rome by two people who went with him to Duke Med School, where he graduated summa cum laude. I figured he must be pretty capable if his fellow students admired and recommended him. I was not disappointed.
I went to Matt to strengthen my ankle after I had torn a ligament there, and I’ve been seeing him for the past 2 months. I always felt that I was getting advice from someone who cared deeply about his patients and his work. Matt is very patient and takes the time to explain your condition and how the exercises he recommends will help. At every visit, Matt modified the session based on how my ankle was doing. Whether I was working with Matt or with his trainer (also Matt), I always received their exclusive attention — I was never crowded into a room with several other clients, as happens at other PT offices.
Matt is someone who is truly excited about his profession. He started Physical Therapy Nation to provide training on advanced PT concepts to his colleagues. In addition, his enthusiasm for helping his patients just shines through in his personality.

Matt Rome is one of the smartest people I know. His knowledge exceeds most doctors I’ve been to, and he’s also willing to take the time to explain my shoulder injury in a way that I could never get from a doctor. This information helps me understand why I’m doing my exercises, which makes it easier to get into a routine and speed up my recovery. He’s also helped me understand what aggravates my injury and what doesn’t, so I know what type of exercise is good, and what’s too much.
Equilibrium’s facitlities are clean and spacious, and they schedule appointments in such a way that nothing’s ever rushed, and I’m never being left on my own wondering why I left the house (which I’ve experienced at other facilities). Everyone’s extremely friendly, from the therapists to the reception desk. Highly recommend.

I came into to see Anna Padilla yesterday and she and the office were amazing. I am recovering from a meniscus repair and even though I am six month out from surgery I am still having issues, partly because I was seeing a therapist who was being overly forceful with her therapy and making things worse. Anna heard me out, assessed the situation with my knee, and very quickly figured out some places where my therapy and own practices were lacking. Within about 10 minutes she had shown me a number of exercises that clearly showed where I was weak and where I needed to strengthen to aid in the healing process. She knew exactly what she was talking about, and gave me lots to work on. I highly recommend seeing Anna if you are having physical problems, especially if you are an athlete because she understands exactly what you’re looking for in terms of recovery. Can’t recommend enough.

Hi Deborah here, I’m a personal trainer, yoga teacher and rehab nurse and last winter I had a terrible fall on a non-​treaded manhole. My knee healed fine, but b/​c I used a cane my shoulder froze up to the point where I had 15% range of motion. Then I met Anna Padilla who in one session turned my shoulder around to 90% range of motion. I’ve since been back for one more session and voila! 98%. I am thrilled.
Anna is not only a resource for information, she is sweet, compassionate, lovely on the eyes and inspiring. Can’t ask for more than that! Thanks Anna!

I was recommended to Equilibrium and Matt Rome for vestibular therapy. Going in to the appointment, I had very little understanding of my condition and how the therapy would help. Matt went above and beyond to explain the therapy, its benefits, and how I could best apply it to my situation. As the sessions progressed, Matt continued to work with me to tailor the exercises to my particular needs. He has gone out of his way to work with my other doctors and help me understand my condition. He is quite simply a gifted healer and an extraordinarily compassionate human being. All of the staff at Equilibrium are friendly and treat me like family. I can’t imagine going anywhere else.

Steven Lavender is a miracle worker. He has tremendous knowledge about the functions and dysfunctions of the body, and he was able to totally relieve complex back and hip pain that three previous PTs were unable to adequately address. I found Steven’s skills to be FAR superior to any other physical therapist I’ve been to (and I’ve been to a lot), but none of that even compares to Steven’s wonderful personality. He is hilarious and goes above and beyond to create a friendly environment where people enjoy themselves as their pain melts away. After a visit, you are guaranteed to feel better both physically and spiritually.

I’ve had knee pain for several years as a result of some injuries combined with a less than optimal fitness level and lack of motivation to put in serious effort to improve. When I decided I wanted to get better, I thought physical therapy would be a good way to get started. I met Steve Lavender at a different practice and when he left to join Equilibrium Physical Therapy, there was no doubt in my mind that I’d follow him there even though it was more inconvenient to get to from my work or home.
I’ve worked with a couple of other physical therapists in the past, and Steve went far beyond the routine diagnosis and prescribed exercises. He took the time to understand me — what my concerns were, what I valued, what my motivations were. He didn’t tell me «You HAVE to do XYZ» and then leave it at that — which I’ve had other physical therapists do. Instead, he made every step I took feel manageable, without judging me for what I did not do while at the same time pushing me to do more. As a result, instead of feeling like a lost cause I ended up feeling better about myself and doing more to help myself. He was also able to prioritize what I need to work on the most — which is to get stronger — and helped me focus on that. He’s been nothing but encouraging, fun to work with, and someone who really does care about my overall well being. So needless to say, I highly recommend working with him.
EPT has been a positive experience in other ways — there is big focus on vibration therapy (which I warmed up to after a few trys and think its an excellent tool to magnify any effort you put in) and there are plenty of vibration machines. Everyone has been friendly and positive, and its a good atmosphere to get better in.

In April I was diagnosed with vertigo. Dr. Sylvia Hesse M.D. at Manhattan Spine & Sports Non-​Surgical Orthopedics (my go-​to doctor) recommended I should see Dr. Rome who is a licensed Physical Therapist with a Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy, telling me he’s the best in the industry.
Dr. Rome examined me and prescribed vestibular exercises to be done at home in addition to the vestibular exercises done in his clinic
Dr. Rome always kept my spirit up by telling me it’s a temporarily condition and by July I’ll be able to drive. When I visited him on July/​18 he told me at the end of the session that my vertigo is gone and I should be able to drive.
His office staff is courteous and always welcomed me with a smile when I came to my appointments. As time passed I felt I we became friends. I would highly recommend using Equilibrium Physical therapy services to anybody who suffers from vertigo or needs physical therapy.

I had knee surgery and have been seeing Matt for about six weeks now. I originally went in for a meniscus tear but ended up having work done to address right knee plica syndrome, chondromalacia of the patella and patella femoral maltracking syndrome. Matt helped me catch an early onset case of cellulitis. It was my first time having surgery so I wouldn’t have known how to recognize an oncoming infection.
The surgery addressed a few issues and Matt has done a great job at addressing all the areas that need work. From stretching to improving mobility to plyometrics work, Matt always knows how far to push. Amir is also great and has been very knowledgeable with the Alter-​G machine to help me get back to running.
Equilibrium’s therapists are all incredibly intelligent and are always sharing the reasoning of what they are doing and why they are doing it. They know the right questions to ask which is great for newer patients who might not know what information to volunteer. The facilities themselves are clean, very modern and I genuinely enjoy my time there. An hour literally flies by in the blink of an eye.
I have recommended Matt’s practice to a few people and would be happy to continue doing so.

There is no way that I can find enough good things to say about Matt Rome and the Equilibrium practice as a whole. I had an injury about 5 months ago that has caused me to need to go to therapy about 3 times a week, which I am still attending. I was confused on how to find a good therapist in the area, but then I came across Matt Rome’s info. From the very first moment I called, they were extremely receptive and flexible in finding the times for me to come in. Matt has made me feel totally comfortable and confident in my healing process. He is always completely focused on me the entire time we have set aside, and goes way beyond the normal treatments with the help of the therapist assistant, Corey (who is awesome as well!). They seem to forward thinking and have equipment such as the Anti gravity treadmill, which allowed me to start to walk earlier than I would have been able to on a normal treadmill. I also love that they use the help of technology by emailing me videos of all of my weekly exercises that I need to do! He is always available via email, and responds quickly to any questions that I have when I am not able to see him! They are always flexible in times if I need to shift things around due to work and I have been able to see the other physical therapist in the office when Matt is away (who are also absolutely wonderful!)
All in all… I don’t think I could have found a better physical therapist or practice than Matt Rome and Equilibrium. They have truly been there every step of my recovery and I feel that they really are passionate in what they do for a living. You can tell that every single person there truly cares about their patients and their recovery! I would 100% recommend them to any one I know for their therapy needs!

I have seen Matt Rome for a couple different knee injuries over the years. He has been incredibly adept at both guiding me through a full ACL rehabilitation and also utilizing various treatment methods depending on my condition at a particular time. He is very knowledgeable about identifying the causes of certain types of pain, discomfort, stiffness, etc. and treating it appropriately. Matt is very focused and caring in his approach and considers the whole picture when treating a condition. Highly recommend.

I have found the fountain of youth! I have been seeing Physical Therapist, Gabriel Ettenson, for over a year for lower back pain and rheumatoid arthritis. I found him to be a knowledgable therapist with up to date information and innovative techniques. This September, he opened Amplitude Vibration Studio in conjuction with Equilibrium Physical Therapy. Whole body vibration is an amazing way to get a core work out, no matter what your level of conditioning, and it provides other positive health effects such as increased bone density. He also offers services such as the Alter G anti gravity tread mill, that allows those of us with bad knees or feet or backs to run like gazelles. Getting all the benefits of running with out the pounding, jarring impact.
Check out the web site for all of the innovative, alternative forms of exercise and body work. Suspension apparatus, active stretching, massage, accupunture, yoga, pilates, they have it all. Meditation classes are offered in the evenings.
Some of the work I do here is covered by my insurance because of the my medical needs, but if you just want a fabulous work out and have no medical problems, you can purchase packages, sign up for classes or go a la carte.
This is for all ages, all levels of fitness and every state of health. It will make you feel amazing.
