Duperval Melissa, DO

It has taken me a long time to write a review for Dr. Duperval, my son is now 14 months old. I had a terrible experience and really should have changed doctors part way through. I learned a hard lesson. My son is a perfectly healthy 14 month old which I am thankful for (though he has peanut, tree nut and egg allergies — higher chance in babies born by c-​section). Throughout my pregnancy we had many many scares and I never felt like Dr. Duperval was great about breaking the news or talking me through them. I won’t go into detail but the worst was when she called me at 6pm on a Friday about test results and told me that the results could mean a few different things but that I should call the genetic counselor on Monday morning. Guess if I spent the weekend Googling? Guess if that entire weekend was ruined?!? She could have waited until Monday seeing as though there was nothing I could have done in the meantime. The constant stress of incidence like this (there were many!) was really really terrible and uncalled for.
My labor was complicated. I made it very clear that I wanted to have a natural birth throughout my pregnancy (after Dr. Duperval offered me a c-​section because my son had a big head). In the end I was induced (on a Monday evening) because my son had a cord around his neck and he was not moving in the same way he previously had. I got to the hospital and Dr. Wu was there (I had a good experience with her). She started the induction. Over the course of the next 34 hours, I was passed off to every other doctor in the practice and never once did I see Dr. Duperval. I ended up having a c-​section (by Dr. Shahim) because my son was in distress.
So while labor didn’t go as planned, I have a healthy baby and I am thankful for the other doctors for taking care of me. Only once during the 5 days that I was in the hospital in labor and recovering, did Dr. Duperval stop by, for a whole 2 minutes. Not a great ending from a doctor I spent 9 months getting to know.

This review is in regards to the administrative staff. For an office that deals with very sensitive matters (cancer, difficult pregnancies and so on), you would think the receptionists would receive some kind of training in how to answer phones, speak with paying customers, and end a phone conversation. Sounding impatient before the patient has even asked a question, giving incomplete information, and then hanging up without saying goodbye is beyond rude, it is unnecessary. A doctor’s office is only as good as her staff, and if this is the effort that goes into the staff, I won’t be wasting any more time and money with the doctor, either.

Dr. Duperval is the most amazing, personable OBGYN I’ve ever had since moving to the city. She CARES, LISTENS and ANSWERS questions I have. I have only ever felt welcomed by Dr. Duperval and am so glad to have her as my Doctor. She is professional and her love of medicine is seen with each visit. She’s the best!

These people never renew my prescription on time

Dr. Duperval is just amazing. She is kind, thorough, accessible, calming; just an amazing woman, in addition to being a phenomenal doctor. She has made me feel like a patient, and not a chart. She does not get frustrated by Dr. Google questions and has the conversation with you. Hands down the first gyn I do not dread a return to. The office itself is clean, relaxing, and not clinical, the receptionist Lisa is saint, extremely diligent and helpful. The nurses are also lovely!

I’ve visited many ob-​gyns over the years but never stayed with any of them. I’ll be staying with Dr. Duperval because I appreciate her matter-​of-​fact manner and her efficient office. I went to her Murray St office downtown, which is within walking distance of my job. Very convenient! She gave me excellent advice and answered all of my questions in a pleasant and considerate fashion. Offices are new and clean.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Duperval for a year now, and after my second annual visit with her, I’m prepared to recommend her as a GYN. Her office is clean, accessible from public transit, and reception is easy to communicate with.
Exam rooms are small, about average for a Manhattan doctor’s office. Had my vitals taken by a nice nurse, and was only kept waiting for a few minutes before Dr. Duperval was in to see me. On our first visit, we first met in her office to get acquainted, and for us to discuss my specific needs/​questions regarding my visit. This second visit for my annual, there was less small talk and Dr. duperval got straight to business– not a problem for me, though some patients may feel more at ease if this process was a bit slowed down. The exam took all of five minutes, a new Rx was called in by reception for me, and I was on my way.
I definitely plan to keep her as my GYN for however long I stay in this city. It’s just too much trouble to be picky and find someone absolutely outstanding. She’s a nice doctor, competent, and I’ve yet to have any issues with her or her office, so that’s good enough for me.

Extremely disorganized office

I really do not like to write reviews like this. I give everyone the benefit of the doubt. However, with all five of the following things occurring during my first visit, I feel responsible for educating other potential patients.
I have received such excellent health care in this city in other doctor’s offices and with so many choices, it is hard to imagine how any of the following could happen, especially in one visit.
1. Dr. Duperval never took a moment to get to know me or introduce herself upon our first meeting. I expect some sort of new patient special care. Sorry, but its incredibly unprofessional to skip that part of our meeting. You are about to get very intimate with me and every other GYN I have had for 30 years has bedside manner that at least has some level of professionalism where we get to know each other.
2. I had some very private information to discuss and Dr. Duperval never lowered her voice — she spoke very loudly throughout our meeting. I could hear the nurses in the hallway and I could hear the patients in other rooms. And I was whispering so that no one else could hear, but Dr. Duperval remained in her regular voice. I was clearly uncomfortable talking about something very private and she could not mirror me or understand my desire to be private.
3. They heat their instruments!!! And no one tested the temperature. Let’s just say that I jumped up out of my stirrups it was so hot when it was placed in a very sensitive area. And the apology that followed was incredibly insincere. She almost blew it off except that I was in so much pain she had to acknowledge me.
4. The staff kept coming in while I was undressed getting instruments from the room which were kept in a place where I had to lift my legs to give them access. After the third one in 3 minutes, I asked them to wait until my appointment was over.
5. The front desk is very unorganized. They didn’t give me the referrals, I had to call for them. And Dr. Duperval said she had a female urologist, but when I called, they only had a male urologist on the books as a referral. Also, I called to confirm the prescriptions had been called in. They assured me that they were and surprise… when I went to pick them up, they had not been called in. My pharmacy had to call for the prescriptions.
I cannot figure out if my new health insurance does not pay this office appropriately, or if Dr. Duperval doesn’t want new patients. But either way, this level of care in NYC — or anywhere in the world — is totally unacceptable. Woman to woman, I wanted her to succeed and I kept thinking the experience would get better. But it just kept getting worse.

Just showed up for my scheduled appointment at the Murray Street office and was told that no doctors were in and I was not in the computer. This is after waiting over 4 weeks for an appointment.

My appointment was canceled with no rhyme or reason. I rescheduled my original appointment that I made on ZocDoc a month ago, yesterday, and received a cancellation notification email from the website this morning. To my surprise, I called the dr.‘s office and the receptionist said the dr. does not accept my insurance, which is strange because I rechecked her profile on the website and it shows that she does in fact accept my plan and furthermore, why wasn’t my original appointment canceled?! This makes no sense!!! I told the receptionist this and she was just as bewildered as I was and begins to apologize profusely. Meanwhile, I hear a woman shouting in the background and the receptionist then abruptly puts me on hold. I’m not sure who the woman shouting was but based on the reviews I’m reading, I can definitely take a wild guess. Something is totally amiss here and now I’m so glad that it was canceled after this morning’s experience and perusing all of the reviews.
In the end, I am very disappointed as her office is literally 10 minutes from my job and easy to get to, but the lack of professionalism definitely leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I will be going elsewhere.

Stay Away! I saw Dr. Duperval for the first 10 weeks of my pregnancy before finally moving to a much better practice. Dr. Duperval is insincere and dismissive to the point of being borderline negligent. I suffered extreme morning sickness, and she not only refused to write me a note for work, she ignored my concerns and symptoms. I ended up in the ER, with a diagnosis of hyperemesis gravidarum. Even after this, she refused to support the hospital’s diagnosis, rushed through every appointment, and only asked if I had any questions as she was opening the door to leave. She always gave very short, non specific answers to questions I did manage to get in. I only fully realized how awful my experience with her was until I changed doctors. My new OB explained my symptoms to me, understood my concerns, helped me manage my symptoms, and even referred me to a specialist that turned out to be a godsend. My new OB also ran critical timely pregnancy tests that Duperval failed to do. Bottom line: stay away from Duperval.

I saw Dr. Duperval at the Warren St office for my well-​woman checks, as well as for my first pregnancy.
Dr. Duperval was compassionate, professional, and friendly. She answered all of my questions and was very patient. I never felt like she was in a rush– she had a great bedside manner.
I wanted my first pregnancy to go smoothly (doesn’t everyone?), and I really wanted to avoid a c-​section if at all possible (seems difficult in a city with a much higher c-​section rate than the national average). I made my wishes known to Dr. Duperval and she did everything to help me achieve that goal. I feel very fortunate to have had Dr. Duperval attend at my delivery. I am almost certain that had one of her partners been on call that day (especially the male provider), I might have ended up with a c-​section. Dr. Duperval was very patient with my (prolonged!) labor, was very encouraging, and coached me through all 2.5 hrs of my pushing. She was a champ and didn’t leave my side throughout the arduous process.
During my pregnancy, I was never kept waiting at her office throughout each of my pregnancy checks. (To make your appointments run on time, I would recommend showing up early to give your urine sample and get roomed which helps keep the doctor running on schedule.)
In addition, I called in a few times with questions (as it was my first pregnancy) and Dr. Duperval always called me back in a timely fashion with reassurance.
If I hadn’t moved out of state, I would most likely continue here for my next pregnancy (but would opt for the private room at Lenox Hill as the shared room was definitely suboptimal– my baby ended up having to go to the NICU after delivery for 7 days and it was so painful to share a room with a woman who had her baby rooming in with her, while mine was in the NICU hooked up to monitors).
I have since recommended Dr. Duperval to a couple of my friends who were also very happy with her services (Gyn only).
Just as an FYI, during your pregnancy, the office staff schedules your various check-​ups with the other partners so you can get to know them. I just didn’t connect with the two other partners. (Since my delivery, they have hired a new MD, who recently finished residency, whom I only saw for one post-​partum check and she seemed nice.)
Overall, Dr. Duperval is amazing, but her partners are less so. Also, I don’t think Lenox Hill is an optimal place to deliver if you are looking for a more natural birthing experience, (and looking to avoid residents – it’s a teaching hospital), but in the end I was glad to be there as they have a Level 3 NICU.

Found Dr. Duperval on zocdoc and think she is wonderful. Professional and nice.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Duperval for the past 2 ½ years and she is an excellent doctor. She delivered both of my children through via C-​Section. The other two Doctors Dr. Shahim and Dr. Wu are also wonderful. But I have to say I truly love having Dr. Duperval as my OBGYN, she not only makes you feel very comfortable but she’s never in a rush while seeing you, is very down to earth and truly is caring. The staff in her office are kind and courteous. I highly recommend Dr. Duperval.

Dr Duperval is great BUT I pity anyone who has to deal with HELEN in the park ave office. I’ve never had a «health care professional» make me feel so small, stupid and un-​cared for. She is in the wrong field if, in the course of their care, people are made to feel the way that I was. No patient deserves the treatment I received from her.

I am beyond shocked to see any less than stellar reviews for Dr. Duperval (and/​or Dr. Shahim and/​or Dr. Wu). I saw all three doctors during what turned out to be a high risk pregnancy, and cannot say enough how INCREDIBLE all of them were throughout the entire process. I’m not understating when I say that I feel like I owe the safety and healthy of both my son and me to their devoted and expert care during my pregnancy.
It’s also worth noting that each of these doctors is also very, very well respected at Lenox Hill. They were each superstar residents there and the whole nursing staff really respect them. (Had two hospitalizations prior to delivery so the nurses tend to give you the real ‘dirt’ on the docs, and they were unanimous in loving all three).
The comment re: the Tribeca office and the receptionist is just wrong. The stairs are unrelated to their office (never used them in my many, many, many visits), and their receptionist is the best in the city. She is smart, friendly and competent — sadly, pretty rare finding in NYC doctor office staffs.
I am sad to say that I moved cross-​country and will not be able to use Dr. Duperval et al for my next pregnancy. They are truly the best.

So, I decide I’m going to try to consolidate my activity to areas near work and home because I spend way too much time traveling and not enough time being efficient. I start with the most important tasks that I can focus on the less important after. So, my health and wellness is key! I got a gym near work. I do all shopping near home and I’m doing much better with time. With that, I decide I’m going to try a GYN near my office — not that I dislike my current GYN but again all in the spirit of efficiency without compromising quality.
I walk into this tiny little Tribeca office with three buxom receptionist that look underworked and dizzy. First, I was perplexed at seeing a spiral staircase in a medical office — especially a GYN office. What happens to high risk pregos? Are they expected to climb those stairs? Anywho, one receptionist looks up and takes my name and gives me paperwork to fill out in the very hot and clamy waitng area. I start filling out the questionnares. Then as fate would have it, as I’m filling out the HIPPA paperwork, I hear the doctor all the way from the waiting area (not that there is much room in the place from one area to another) giving a patient bad news with her outside voice. WTH! Why was she giving this patient inside information with her outside voice???
Is this hidden camera? Was that to see my reaction? Either way, total shit show — SMH! I stopped filling out the paperwork and ran like never before straight out the door with my paperwork. No one even called to ask if I wanted to reschedule or if I was ok. Is she a real docotor? If she is, she needs to get a real office and be sensitive with confidential info!

She goes above and beyond the care of typical Doctor. Kudos! I found her on ZocDoc

Dr Duperval is 1 of 3 great OBGYN’s at the practice I’ve been going to for my pregnancy. This is my first pregnancy and I was new to NYC when I found out I was pregnant. I was recommended one of the other OBGYN’s at the practice, however I found I had the best connection with Dr Duperval who is also absolutely lovely. Her bedside manner is perfect, it never feels like she’s in a rush, she’s caring and compassionate, plus she’s an excellent doctor. I was lucky to have her for part of my labor, though I was in hospital with complications for several days, so one of the other OBGYN’s in the practice was there at the end for the actual delivery. Highly recommend her!!!
