Consolidated Edison Company of New York

Consolidated Edison is an investor-​owned energy utility company with $ 13 billion in annual revenues and $ 36 billion in assets. In 1823, Con Edison’s earliest corporate predecessor, the New York Gas Light Company, was founded by a consortium of New York City investors. In 1884, six gas companies combined into the Consolidated Gas Company. Samuel Leggett, the founder of the New York Gas Light Company, was granted the first franchise to lay underground gas pipes in New York City, and his home was the first house in New York to be lit by gas lights. Leggett was an early Quaker and is buried in the historic graveyard at Friends Meeting House in Flushing, Queens.

The customer service reps are a bunch of inept human beings. They cannot follow directions, they do not keep the word on agreements that are made. I moved out of my apartment in August and closed my acct and now collections is calling me saying they did another meter read? 241 $? How is that even possible in a 500 sq ft apartment? It’s not.

So they never send my bill and some how in enrolled me in e-​bill. So I make my payment no problem right? Wrong they actually never accepted my payment and instead send me a notice saying that they can’t process my payment. I call and they can’t take visa. Call again and turns out they can take visa. Ugh, how hard is it to send a bill in the mail? Oh and don’t go to One Metro Tech Center expecting anyone with authority to be there. I was told that supervisors at the customer service center don’t have any actual power.

Con Ed decided to guess at my bill this month. The amount they came up with would be appropriate for a heavy industrial plant not a two room apartment. Of course they refuse to fix their mistake.

They enrolled me in e-​bill again, still guess at my bill occasionally and once in awhile refuse to accept electronic payments. However, the customer service people have gotten better at removing you from e-​bill and say it happens all the time. Yay?
Pros
+They give you electricty and you can’t get it anywhere else.
Cons
— They can’t bill you correctly to save their lives.
— They guess at your meter use because reading the meters would take effort.
— They randomly dump you in e-​bill.
— They might decide to randomly refuse your paymetns.
— They just flat out suck.

WORST COMPANY EVER. Over the summer they had a strike and decided not read the meters in our building. Instead, they gave us a half-​assed estimated bullshit bill, which was fine. Then, when they returned they supposedly went back and read the meters, which they didn’t. I only know this because our building keeps a log of their visits; they did not come, nor were they seen on our surveillance footage. My bill went up over $ 300. I wrote them a note and they wrote back saying that they would investigate. They never did and I’ve been paying off little bits of that rediculousness since. Well today, I got a final notice and a threat to turn off my bill because there supposedly is $ 100 owed from that issue. Well I want to see, so I’m going to pay it, but I’m going to bash them every where possible and I am going to have it out with them over the phone.
I WOULD MOVE OUT OF THE CITY JUST SO I NEVER HAVE TO DEAL WITH THEM AGAIN.

Sure, they’re one of the biggest utility rip-​offs I’ve experienced from living in several US cities, but they haven’t electrocuted anyone in at least a couple of weeks, right?

As a native New Yorker, Con Ed serves my abode city to bring power and natural gas amid their excessively high rates but restores service to affected regions attributed by September 16^th, 2010’s violent tornado and macroburst’s storms. Where in life all is required for one light to decimate darkness and despair!
