I’m a voice teacher with a studio in Manhattan. I have more than 15 years of experience teaching singing technique to professionals and amateurs who perform everything from opera to Persian classical music to death metal.

I teach a process-​oriented vocal technique, focusing on the activities and movements that create singing rather than striving to elicit a particular sound from my students. My methods are highly diagnostic, reliably exposing areas of tension and poor coordination so they can be dealt with effectively. I provide a thorough functional knowledge of vocal anatomy so my students understand the real mechanics of what they’re doing and the purpose of every exercise. I take care to align all instruction with the principles of motor learning to ensure the development of practical mastery in addition to conceptual and aural comprehension.

Claudia is a well-​respected professional teacher, personal trainer, and writer who regularly contributes to Classical Singer Magazine and has an wonderful blog with free advice for all singers. I frequently refer to her writings and go to her for personal input in working with my own students. Not only is she a top-​notch teacher, but she’s a lovely and generous colleague!

Your search for a voice studio has ended! Claudia Friedlander is not only beyond knowledgeable about all things voice related she has a true gift for teaching. It is one thing to know how to do something well and quite another to teach someone to be successful doing the same thing. Claudia is the best I’ve seen at both. I suspect all of her students get a very customized approach. In my case she quickly caught on to the way I liked to work and tailored our sessions so that I could get the most bang for my buck. She is clearly exceptional when it comes to teaching OPERA but I found her to be equally as adept at helping me with my MUSICAL THEATRE repertoire. I studied with Claudia for 3 years and would still be faithfully showing up at her door each week yearning for more had I not moved across the country. Go for a consultation you will not be disappointed.

After I had taken a year off from studying/​performing, I found Claudia through an opera singers’ forum. Her pedagogy made so much sense. Voice teachers in the past often used imagery with me and lots of intangible (for lack of a better word) descriptions that sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t. Claudia had a way of taking many things past teachers said and making them actually make sense (in a more direct/​logical/​scientific way). As a personal trainer, she has a great wealth of knowledge about the human body. I felt like she gave me a better awareness of my own body and voice. She also is always extremely positive and upbeat while still being direct and realistic. She is very generous with her time, knowledge, even connections… shortly after I began studying with her, I was cast as The Queen of the Night and gained some exciting experiences through her. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a voice teacher.
