History

Established in 2007.

From its inception, Brownstone Tutors has been guided by a single mission: to find and retain the best tutors available. From an initial client base of zero, Brownstone Tutors has quickly grown to become one of NYC’s leading boutique tutoring agencies, helping hundreds of students each year achieve and surpass their academic goals.

Meet the Manager

Matthew B.

Manager

A graduate of Princeton, Matthew Brown has been working as the Tutoring Director at Brownstone since March, 2011. A long time tutor himself, Matthew won a number of teaching awards during his stint as a Ph.D. student in History at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He brings a wealth of experience and compassion to his current job, overseeing Brownstone’s tutoring relationships.

Matthew and his team are as caring and professional as they come. They went above and beyond in their guidance and support of my son as he was getting tutored for the ACTs. They helped tailor a plan for him that was very specifically tailored to meet his needs and his tutor was incredibly kind and skilled in her approach.

We used Brownstone for our elementary school student to take the ISEE.
The tutor and manager (owner?) were quite serious about the process and committed to trying to help.
But, the prices were absurd ($ 250 for a session), and, frankly, I’m really not sure our child learned more from the tutor, than from us as parents.
Blue Tomato was a great experience (and $ 100), and I would highly recommend that company over this one.
I’d also point out that they didn’t even have test materials to share with us, and so we never got the sense they were teaching the test, rather than the skills you need for the test. We used the same questions over and over as drills. And the prices really were absurd. You felt taken advantage of. I really would look elsewhere. These are the kinds of tutors we do not need more of.

I have been using Brownstone tutors for both my son and daughter and they have been exceptional in the tutors they have assigned and the results they have achieved. Specifically, my daughter and son both increased their SAT scores by a significant amount far exceeding what we expected was possible. In addition, my daughter has used Brownstone tutors in both science and math and they have been critical in helping her understand many of the concepts that the teacher may not have explained well in class. I would highly recommend them!

I have been using Brownstone for two years and I can honestly say, they have been amazing. They are an honest, smaller tutoring firm who really CARE about the students and the families. We have used them for general tutoring, SAT prep, SAT subject tutoring, and really anything we needed. VERY ACCOMMODATING and if my son needed tutoring for one time– they were good with that, too. The fact is the tutors are incredibly qualified– experienced, very smart and very nice people. Some tutoring companies want to sign u up for unnecessary amounts of SAT work (I won’t mention any names) –Brownstone realizes that for some of us tutoring is a big expense. I recommend them to all my friends and a few have used Brownstone-​ALL happy. I really wish everyone would use them– because what they offer in NYC is a rarity. I give them a 5plus stars.
