Shade Hotel

Terrible. One wonders if the people who designed this hotel ever stayed in a hotel. This $ 400+ room lacks any place for using a computer (other than the front desk’s suggestion of sitting in bed with it). There is no desk, no desk chair, no nothing. The room’s only wastebasket (big enough for about one newspaper) was under the sink. None elsewhere. One 1-​inch square of soap was provided. The free breakfast buffet was fine for a $ 100 room. A totally bad place.

I have stayed here several times and this is my Los Angeles area hotel of choice. I have a lot of friends in the South Bay Area so you can’t beat the location. The atmosphere is lively and the rooms are very trendy. Unlike a lot of hotels the food is so good that despite all of the other walkable dining options you do not mind staying put for meals.

Clean friendly hotel in an amazing location. Lobby bar is great as well as the outdoor patio is used for many different kinds of events. Staff and service was good and I enjoyed my experience and time at Shade.

When I first walked in the door I was overwhelmed by all the people inside at the bar. It’s seem like a club or a local hangout.
We checked in and went to our room in the first floor and our bags followed. We couldn’t believe how quiet it was in the room considering that 30ft away was the party at the bar.
The room seems kinda cramped due to large pieces of furniture inside but the décor is nice. When u open up the tub area the room gets bigger. The upside to this rooms are that they have spa tubs.
This is a great place to take someone if you want to impress or be romantic.
I don’t really have much to complain about with this hotel. Like everything it has its pros and cons. The pros you will see for yourself and like. The cons were that it is pricey a night and the bed was kinda hard. But this is a must keep hotel in you list of places to stay

Great hotel in the perfect location for Manhattan Beach.
The hotel is a wonderful experience from the moment you arrive until you leave.
Champaign on arrival. Amazing rooms that are very romantic. The bar lobby is fun. Drinks are somewhat overpriced, but the atmosphere is great.
They offer bicycles to use and this is the perfect spot for biking on the strand.
Breakfast is included in the lobby and also free newspaper and WiFi.
If you can afford this price range this is he place to stay.
Normally a 2-​night minimum.
If you must come to the Concrete Jungle then you can soften the experience with an amazing hotel experience
There is a very good restaurant next door called Nick’s Manhattan Beach. Suggest to make a reservation for a booth outside with the heaters. Very comfortable, great service and much quieter dinner experience.

I’m staying here currently and I can’t compliment the staff more. The rooms are perfect, they don’t short you on any amenities. I will definitely be back!!!

Way over-​rated. Hotel itself is a wannabe chic upscale property, but is nestled beside a fire station and the rooms are tiny with «Home Good» fixtures. They park a bath/​spa in the middle of it to hide the inadequacies.
The bar area looks like a Denny’s diner, but had decent service. The rooftop area event we attended had a about 4 heaters out, where half the guests stood around the outskirts freezing… there were about 6 more unused sitting in the storage area within eye sight.
This place is just average. For $ 400 a night, I expected more.

Ken Tsuchida makes all the difference at Shade. His kindness, generosity, and hospitality are what make this boutique hotel shine from the inside or. Can’t wait to plan my corporate party in their beautiful courtyard. Thanks Shade!

Great venue. Love having drinks here and the food is fantastic. Great overall vibes. I love how they have social hours. I have been to a view engagement parties and weddings as well. Hands down great service. I own a flower shop and am lucky to also have been able to help decorate and design. Super rad location. I have stayed in the rooms and very nice too. Super clean and modern. Can’t wait to see the new location in Redondo Beach

Have stayed there many times since it opened. Always enjoy the warm greetings and seeing the same staff who have worked there from the beginning. My grandchildren consider it their second home and love the roof and spa pool.

Shade is the perfect boutique hotel — a gorgeous, vibrant hideaway that makes you feel like a rockstar evading the paparazzi, protected by a doting staff of hospitality experts who simply lack the word «no» in their vocabulary.
As a Boston-​based lawyer who has found himself often joyfully litigating in Southern California, Shade has become my Manhattan Beach home. From Milo (the gregarious hotel owner with a Rolodex of gold), to master mixologist Jonny behind the Zinc bar, to hotel manager Ken (who sat on the phone getting my colleague and me impossible reservations for a crucial client dinner at a local hot spot with virtually no notice) to Elke (the awesome valet who remembered my name after one visit and greeted me by memory when I returned), my Shade family is simply amazing. Couple that with ridiculous rooms featuring luxurious hot tubs coupled with chromatherapy lighting, cyclone fireplaces, sink-​into-​paradise tempurpedic beds, and the best hotel bar on earth — literally in the heart of the South Bay’s best all-​around beach town (a couple of blocks from the Pacific) — there is simply no substitute.
If anyone assumes it’s just a hotel for personal stays — and not business — rest assured. Not only is Zinc a terrific venue for breakfast, lunch and mid-​day meetings, but the free WIFI is phenomenal. I’ve managed to be exceptionally productive during Shade stays.
Perhaps the most amazing thing is that, for anyone used to downtown LA or NYC hotel prices at 4 star-​plus hotels, Shade is exceptionally reasonable. I stay in hotels several times a month, but nothing compares to Shade’s boutique chic. I’ll be back. Again and again and again. ..

We chose Shade as the focal point for our wedding. Jolise and the entire staff made the experience for us and our families something that most people only wish they could replicate. From the initial visit, to the tasting with the parents, they made everyone feel they knew what they were doing, provided amazing food and gave sage advice. Once it was time for the event they guided us through the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner with flawless execution. The wedding day, stressful, not even! We had an amazing event and party that our friends still compliment us on. The venue, staff, and team led by Jolise can only be described as magnificent. We can only offer the words, THANK YOU and tremendous effort on our day to the staff and ownership team.

We had such a great experience the first time we returned a month later. Our stay exceeded our expectations. And now, as I write this review, I’m sitting in the bar enjoying the excellent service and hospitality from the front desk and bar.
Get away from the big mainstream hotels and enjoy a relaxing stay at Shade. That’s not to say they don’t kick it up a bit at night. The downstairs bar can crank up at night for a great small club/​lounge experience. Don’t fight it… embrace it. It’s very centrally located. A very short walk to many local shops and more bars and restaurants than you can hit up in one weekend. It’s also a short and very enjoyable bike ride to The Redondo Beach Boardwalk.

I absolutely love the décor of this place! Got to stay in one of the rooms and it was very chic and modern. I also love the hotel bar they have when you enter the hotel!

Update:
Very shortly after posting my last review, Shade management contacted me in an effort to make things right.
Ken, the hotel manager, was easy going and accommodating, and graciously offered me the originally advertised foodie package plus a complimentary anniversary dinner at Zinc.
Their IT team has also since update the website to accurately reflect the blackout dates.
The fact that all of this happened in the course of a few days reflects upon good social media management, good customer service, and speedy front-​end web updates to boot.

Stayed for 4 nights. The location is great for so many things. Blocks from the Strand, the pier, dozens of fantastic restaurants, bakeries and bars. The shopping is plentiful with May boutique shops. The shops are pricey but fun to go through.

Awesome location near beach, shops and restaurants. Niche hotel. Hot tub and light therapy in the rooms, bedside cake pop, not a feature overlooked. Wall garden is cool too,

We came here for the WineLA stars of Napa valley event. My husband and I are definitely not big wine people so we would never pay for the $ 145+ event ticket but let’s just say we know the right people and were able to get in. :)
The hotel is absolutely fantastic. It is in the heart of Manhattan Beach– which means… Good luck finding parking. You can pay $ 16 for valet though.
Everything about the hotel is swanky and modern and swanky and swanky.
The food is absolutely delicious – the crab cakes and fruit tart were my favorite.
If you can afford $ 400+ a night, then I definitely recommend staying here.
They are building another Shade hotel in Redondo beach so definitely check that place out in the future!

Nicely appointed hotel. If you’re going to stay in MB and not really leave, this is the place:
–walking distance to EVERYTHING
–nice bed linens and robe, smelled fresh, not like BLEACH. WOW
–Lather products
–Cake pops and Fiji water bedside, on BOTH sides EVERYDAY
–Turn down service
–Tempurpedic bed and pillows of EVERY shape, LOVE!!!
–DirecTV
–Blowdryer AND curling iron, you NEVER see the latter
–Free breakfast EVERYDAY downstairs
–Keurig machine
–STOCKED fridge, but still room for some items
–Nice rooftop pool/​hot tub
–Interesting FIRE element in the room
If you’re trying to check in earlier than 3PM, probably ain’t going to happen. But they will accommodate you by bringing all your luggage and personal items to the room. My salad was nestled in the fridge when we entered.
Valet guys are excellent. Call ahead so they can pull your car up. $ 24/​day. Not bad.
Some adjustments could be made with the number of towels in the room, two bath and one sheet is NOT enough. And the quality of towel could use some help.
Bummer: no GYM. They are partnered with Equinox, so just show your room key and get access. 2 miles away. There is FREE yoga on the roof two days a week.
Noise: Lots of midday chatter from Zinc downstairs, if you’re a cat napper like me. If you’re an early bird, you’ll hear a faint bass at night. The two sets of double doors do a pretty good job of muffling the noise.
Definitely the premier place to sleep in MB.
