I have worked in medicine and surgery for many decades and can verify that Dr. James Kline is a really expert dentist and practitioner. His work is ultra-​precise, and his office runs in a pleasant and expeditious fashion. I have observed innumerable surgeons and dentists over the years, and his precision, judgement and technique are really outstanding. He has made two new beautiful front (!) teeth for me, as well as crowns and a root canal. He will tell you the truth about what you need and what you don’t, as well as possible alternatives. I cannot recommend him more highly.

Dr. Kline was recommended by one of my close friends. I have had a few appointments with him and have always felt comfortable and fully informed about my procedures. I recently had a wisdom tooth extraction and I have to say… it was the EASIEST tooth extraction I have ever had. I have had my wisdom teeth removed before (I’m one of those individuals that does them one at a time for some reason) and this was by FAR the best. I even had a hook on the root of the tooth and Dr. Kline was able to remove it in about a minute and 30 seconds. After the removal I didn’t bleed as much as I had in the past nor was I in very much pain. I would definitely recommend Dr. Kline!

Yep exactly why we left this guy years ago! He definitely comes across as a used car salesman. I questioned him often on his procedures until we finally left.

I have been going to Dr. Kline for many years and after seeing many dentist I have to say Dr. Kline knows his stuff and he is very honest never trying to sell you on anything that does not need to be done. I can’t believe the negative reviews on him they simply are not true. The only negative I can say Manhattan beach residents may not like is that his office is a little out dated and he does not have the latest and greatest of everything but as far as experience goes 39 years isn’t bad. Dr. Kline is the the best!

l have been going to Dr. Kline for over 15 years. And it’s not because he takes my insurance. A friend of mine recommended him to me and l’m happy she did. He educated me about my teeth, and l have excellent dental hygiene. He has told me things, (not that l had cavities), that no other dentist told me about my teeth, which l saw as knowing more, not less than the others. ln subsequent years and after talking with other dentists, l have garnered the knowledge that Dr. Kline is an expert in his field!
On a whim, l just visited his Unilocal page and l am shocked at the few negative reviews! He has brought my beautiful teeth to another level, even though his décor is from the 70’s. Who gives a damn what kind of décor he has, and what does that person know about ‘state-​of-​the-​art’ dental equipment, anyway? ls she herself a dentist? lf she gets a dental degree, maybe l’ll listen to what she has to say. Another disturbing aspect to her review was not only the fact that she saw that Batman movie, not only the fact that she identified with it, but also the fact that she knew the characters’ names. Then she describes the scene? Whaaaaaaa? OK.
Then, when she goes to get a second opinion, she gets one from the, (obviously incompetent), dentist she had seen before? She sounds really intelligent. Really? Did it ever occur to her to go to, l don’t know, say, a third dentist? When you’re looking for some TRUE validation, it’s always a good idea not to mention any details leading up to that point, rather leave it open to interpretation.
She sounds a bit weird for me to take seriously, and l hope that her arrogance won’t stop her from getting her teeth in top shape. lt must be hard to hear that something on your person isn’t as perfect as you thought it was. That must have been a blow.
l’m so happy l found Dr. Kline all those years ago, l’ll be sad and a bit anxious when he retires. His staff are always so friendly too, that speaks volumes about his good nature, bedside manor indeed. BTW, that poor thing sounds like she has a tooth to grind. Why would Jennifer Love Hewitt have hugged Dr. Kline anyway? He’s just sharing that experience with his patients, whom l know he considers friends too.

Totally agree with the BAD ratings on this nightmare of a dentist. The hygienist actually yelled at me for not flossing, and Dr. Kline boomed into the room, looked at my mouth and said confidently, «OK-we’re going to replace ALL of your fillings!» NO THANK YOU! No dentist since has recommended replacement of ANY of my fillings– don’t fix what’s not broke (unless you want to overcharge my dental insurance…). Also they wanted me to come back for some super– deep scaling and billed for this service, even though I did not receive it. No dentist since has recommended anything other than a return in 6 months. STAY AWAY from this guy!!!

I went to Dr Kline because he takes my insurance. I have been lucky with my teeth overall, but HATE going to the dentist. He is a very nice man, and the office staff is courteous and efficient. I have read uncomplimentary reviews, and can’t believe it is the same office, when I had the total opposite experience. His fees are average, he is concerned about my comfort, and a great sense of humor, (more importantly he didn’t hurt me, even a little) He repaired a front tooth, damaged in a snow board accident, and it looks great.

I have to agree with the poster above, Carmen B. Not only should 1 – 800 Dentist not have Dr. Kline on their site, anyone reading this review should seriously consider going to him.
When I moved to the South Bay, I decided to switch dentists to be more local. I went to 1 – 800 Dentist who suggest Dr. Kline for what I needed. Oh how I wished I never did this.
Over the course of the time I was with Dr Kline — I had 4 fillings done. It should have been a signal to me that after having the fillings, my teeth hurt weeks later. Even with bite readjustments, something was totally off. ANd somehow it could never be fixed.
Finally, this September, after my top wisdom tooth (having had a filling) was throbbing, I decided to go to another dentist who had come highly recommended.
To my horror, I found out 3 of the 4 fillings were completely BAD. The two top on my right, which new dentist x-​rayed, there was decay that had seeped into the teeth. In short, both fillings developed holes in them and therefore, I was worse off than I had been before. What happened next? TWO Crowns.
The other wisdom tooth top left is now in need of a root canal. Why? That filling too also has holes in it which decay has seeped into.
I seriously wonder if I had anything wrong with these teeth to start and now, I’ve had to deal with more pain and more $$$ to fix them. Thank god my new dentist is on-​the-​ball.
Save your teeth, time and money. Stay away.

I agree with the previous poster – this man is the WORST dentist I have ever been to. Unfortunately, he was the only local dentist that took my insurance, but in the end, you get what you pay for.
Putting aside his awful «bedside manner» (he is brusque, in a hurry, rough on the mouth and just basically a jerk), Dr. Kline made a major dental error in my mouth that has now caused me to have a tooth extracted and a dental implant.
How? He put a crown on a lower bicuspid and either 1) sealed it without getting rid of all the decay in the remaining tooth, or 2) left a gap between the crown and the cement that allowed bacteria to grow and ruin the remaining tooth and kill the root.
Just shoddy work that is now causing me to lose my tooth and is costing me thousands.
Whatever you do, DO NOT go to this dentist. Nightmare.

Dr. Kline is the worst dentist on the planet, or at least in Manhattan Beach (which is its own planet of sorts). I tried not, initially, to judge Dr. Kline based on the fact that his office literally has not been renovated since the 1970’s, nor has his equipment, or, for that matter, his ties. I also tried not to judge him based on the fact that he has a picture of himself hugging Jennifer Love Hewitt. Not that I have anything against her. I’m actually ambivalent about Ms. Hewitt, but I thought it was odd because Dr. Kline is old. He is a dentist. He probably has no good reason to be hugging Jennifer.
There is one exam room that I’d spent extensive time in, and the ceiling is composed of stained glass. This is disturbing for a reason that I can’t quite seem to put my finger on. It makes me think a bit of the scene in «Batman» (Tim Burton’s) when Batman comes crashing through the glass ceiling of the museum to save Vicki Vale. I like Batman, but I don’t think a visit to the dentist’s should resemble a Batman scene (although, I did need saving), especially when one is lying in the dentist chair entirely prone, drooling on themselves while Dr. Kline rattles off numbers of molars that _​supposedly_​have cavities. Observe the emphasis on «supposedly».
Herein lies the main reason that Dr. Kline is the worst dentist. It started off as a conflict of vanity. I am vain, exceptionally vain, but I’d argue I’m not inordinately vain. I’ve always gloated that I’ve never had a cavity. Ever. Not as a little kid, not as an adult. I’ve never had one. I’m sure I got good dental genetics because it’s not that I floss regularly or that I take better care of my teeth than most. Nonetheless, I’ve never had a cavity. So, in December of 2009 when I went for my biannual cleaning, and the hygienist (who I really liked) observed that my teeth were in just as good of condition as they’d always been, I was sent into a near tailspin when the dentist poked his gray head in to provide his part of the exam and began rattling off identifiers of teeth like he was calling out lotto numbers. I lay there, motionless, listening to the exchange and knowing, inevitably, what this was culminating towards. Still… I, vainly, tried to remain… still.
The damp bib was removed from my chest, and I sat up, my heart beating. I looked around, and Dr. Kline confirmed what I feared most at that moment. He said I had half a dozen cavities. Saaay whaaat?! Alas, I was speechless. The hygienist intuited my dismay, and she tried, unsuccessfully, to talk me off my ledge. I don’t know if even Batman could have saved me at that moment. I stumbled from the exam room, trying not to cry. I was already embarrassed at my apparent, significant dental lapse. As I checked out and scheduled my next cleaning, the receptionist encouraged me to call back in the next week in order to calendar my fillings. Fillings? I’d never heard the word before. I wasn’t even sure what it meant. So, I did some research. I called everyone close to me, and tried not to emotionally collapse as I explained my dire situation. By the time I was done speaking with my dad, I had a new outlook.
He suggested I get a second opinion. Of course! Might I not be as smart as I thought I was? Apparently not. So, I made quick plans to return to my former dentist who was less geographically accessible, but who had always been pleasant, knowledgeable and efficient. I explained the situation to her, and she said not to tell her where the other dentist had found the «problems» (i.e., cavities!!), and she’d take a look herself. Low and behold, she found nothing. N-​O-​T-​H-​I-​N-​G = no cavities, Dr. Kline. Furthermore, she was quick, sure and provided the exam gratis.
Dr. Kline’s office continued to call me for several months encouraging me to come in and get my fillings. Much like a car salesman, Dr. Kline thought he had properly assessed his prey, her weakness and her pocketbook. However, he misjudged me, as I did him, and JLH can go ahead and keep this duplicitous graying DDS turd. As far as I’m concerned, he’s gone the way of my wisdom teeth; he’ll be of no further bother to me. Extracted!
