Bay Animal Hospital has been part of the Manhattan Beach community for over 30 years while providing health care to over 235,000 pets.

Our veterinary practice consists of 6 full-​time veterinarians who are supported by over 35 employees. Our entire staff is dedicated to providing an excellent veterinary visit for both you & your pets. We pride ourselves on having a staff who all work together to provide the very best care for each of our patients. Every one of our doctors has been internship trained and regularly have rounds to discuss cases in order to ensure that each patient is receiving optimum care. We have a mobile surgeon available for our more advanced surgical procedures. We are also fortunate to have a comprehensive network of nearby specialists to consult with and refer to when needed for more complicated cases. Sean G.

Business Owner

Dr. Sean Goodell is a southern California native, born and raised in Riverside. He earned a BS in Animal Science from Cal Poly Pomona in 1996, and a DVM from UC Davis in 2000. After earning his veterinary degree, he completed a 1 year rotating medicine and surgery internship at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Dr. Goodell returned to California and joined Bay Animal Hospital in September 2001. He became a partner in the practice in 2006, and full owner at the beginning of 2009. Dr. Goodell shares his Manhattan Beach apartment with his cat Maggie, a Himalayan mix that he adopted from Bay Animal Hospital in 2004. He’d love to add a dog to the family, but is waiting until he graduates to a house with a yard. He’s a big sports fan, partial to the Lakers, Dodgers, and USC Trojans. He enjoys reading, exercising, traveling, and playing golf.

I would take my dog to a vet in woodland hills. Truly the worst vet ever. I live in manhattan beach but her breeder would take her dogs there so yada yada yada I started taking her there. After so many bad experiences, I called a friend and she told me that she takes her pooch to Bay animal and to try it there. For starters, at my last vet I only saw her once in the year that I took my dog there and it was for the first time when I went with my breeder to have her checked out. Thats it, I was never allowed to see the vet, which made me think… was there an actual vet back there? Anyway I took my dog to bay animal hospital, and I was warmly welcomed by the staff. The doctor came out and greeted me and asked me to join her in the back where she answered my questions. After my dogs procedure (benign tumor removal) she came out and educated me on the procedure and told me how my dog did. She put me at ease. I took my dog home and a few days later the doctor personally called and checked up on my dog. I was so pleasantly shocked that she took time out of her day to call and check in, she didn’t have any of the other staff call. My dog is my baby, and when you have people that treat them so extraordinarily you want to applaud it. Thank you Bay Animal Hospital, you guys are one hell of a pet hospital.

I just recently started taking my cat to Bay Animal Hospital and will definitely be back. Everyone from front desk to vet is friendly, and seems to care about the well-​being of your pet. I don’t feel they try to upsell you services that are unnecessary. Overall, great service!!!

This review is way over due. I’ve been taking my little guy to this vet many years ago. He sees Dr Goodell. He is the MOST gentle vet my guys has ever seen! If you are someone that loves your dog as much as I do, then trust this doctor. He is very consistant with his care. He give suggestion and advice and he never make you feel like you are not doing what is best for your dog. He has such a gentle touch when examining my dog. He is prompt about calling you and leaving you a following voice mail just like he says he would.
This office is great overall, the front desk people are super nice too. The place is super clean. I went to the bathroom and I hate to say this but that bathroom was cleaner then my dentist office (I just came from my dental appointment). I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a GREAT vet! If you refer a friend, they get $ 25 off and you get $ 25 off your next exam.

The nicest receptionists and vets. Always knowledgeable, I’ve never walked out of there with a question. I feel good about leaving my little puppy there and they are open and take the time to answer everything. Office is clean, spacious, and the exam rooms the same way. This is the 2nd animal hospital I’ve visited and I’m done looking. It’s even a little far for me, but I seriously do not mind the travel for the quality.

I’ve been to two other vets with my Golden but this was the only one open on a Sunday when we needed a quick visit a couple of weeks ago. After the experience, we’ll definitely be using this as our vet from now on!
I called when they opened that Sunday morning and they were able to see my dog as a walk-​in within half an hour. When we arrived, they called us into a room right after I’d filled out the paperwork.
Dr. Goodell was our veterinarian and he was so kind and thorough with the examination he did on my dog. He noticed a heart murmur that my two previous vets had not and he gave me recommendations for next steps.
My dog is shy and fearful, so instead of having me come back out and pay in the waiting room, Dr. Goodell offered for me and Charlie to be able to stay in the room. One of the girls at the desk came and collected my credit card, then brought me my receipt. It was all so thoughtful on their part, and something I haven’t experienced elsewhere.
Finally, they called me about a week after the appointment to see how Charlie was doing for the small cut that we’d gone in for.
A really wonderful animal hospital!

Bay Animal Hospital is a group of wonderful veterinarians
Bay Animal Hospital was Lilly’s vet for 5 or 6 years and is now Honey’s vet for 2 weeks.
As Lilly was reaching the end of her wonderful life (13 ½ years) Dr. Goodell could not have been gentler with Lilly and kinder with me. I was always very clear that I never wanted to keep a dog alive, that I felt I had a responsibility to do the best for the dog. When the time came and I was just a mess, Dr. Goodell was able to remind me that I believed my responsibility was to Lilly, the thing that made him unusual was that he was somehow able communicate it in a way that I could hear. It was clear for my husband and me. What a gift.
Oh, I think you should also know, all of the veterinarians at Bay Animal are great with the animals, they will always figure a way to squeeze you in for an emergency, and the front desk is efficient and happy.
Of course everything you see is great. To me, the thing that really tells you about the ethos at Bay Animal is the staff in the back, the people who really take care of the pets when they are not being tended to by a vet. These guys are wonderful. They are so gentle with animals, cheerful and always moving. They chat with each other enough creating a wonderfully warm environment for the animals. But they are not hanging about. I know this because Lilly ate chocolate and I sat there one night for several hours as she recovered. The guys forgot I was there, so I able to really observe them and I was so happy to know that Lilly and now Honey would be in great hands!

I’ve had cats for my entire adult life, and have taken them to vets in several different cities in different parts of the country, always doing my research ahead of time. Bay Animal Hospital is THE BEST VET we’ve ever been to, anywhere. We have mostly seen Dr. Nagao and Dr. Goodell, but all the vets and technicians are fantastic. One of our cats had a bunch of medical issues over the past year, and Bay Animal Hospital deserves much of the credit for getting him back to a healthy state. I’m tearing up as I write this review, because that’s how much the excellent care here means to me.

There are not enough wonderful comments I can make about this group, especially Dr. Goodell! Recently my cat of 10 years, Giraffe, became very ill and unfortunately was diagnosed with lymphoma. Dr. Goodell was beyond thorough with his recommendations, treatment options and prognosis for my little guy. Unfortunately, we decided that the best option for him was to be sent to heaven. We didn’t want to see him suffer anymore than he already had in the last few weeks. I miss him every day, but I know that he was given the ultimate level of care and empathy during his last few days and moments. I will never forget Dr. Goodell and his kindness towards me and how available he was during the last few days. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
*I would like to add that Laura was very sweet and delivered Giraffe’s ashes to me at my home as she lives near me. That is really awesome and goes above and beyond in customer service. I am a forever client!

A friend of mine recommended I take my dog here when he started shaking one night. I have two veterinarians in my family but unfortunately they are on the East coast, needless to say my standards are pretty high. From the moment I walked into the door I had the best experience. From the front desk on I had the greatest interactions with everyone there. We saw Dr. Nagao who took her time with us, explained everything to me, and broke down the cost and they were super busy that day. Later she even called me at home twice to check on my guy. I cannot say enough great things about this place. My dog is doing much better now and I have found a fantastic vet

I’ve been taking my French bulldogs (Bali and Khaleesi) here for almost two years now since they were puppies and I have to say Dr. Bailey has been fantastic! (My Mom Jane has been coming here forever with her dogs Maddy, may she rest in doggy heaven, and Layla) I’ve also had great experiences with Dr. Nagao and I love the front office staff, they are superb! I’ve boarded our pups there too and they give them nice walks and they always leave super tired which is nice knowing they got out and played around. I love that they offer half off vaccinations on Thursdays and they’re great about follow up calls which I love. Thanks to the entire staff at Bay Animal, I appreciate all that you do!

Our vet in the marina area retired, sold her practice and moved back to the mid-​west. I found Bay Animals Hospital here at Unilocal.On Huey’s 1st visit, Shiori was very helpful also Dr. Sean Goodell came over and said hello and welcome us while we were waiting.
So happy I selected Dr. Jennifer Bailey, she is so sweet and her specialty is also in feline medicine. Huey was totally chill and happy. Dr. Bailey was very thorough with her wellness examination, she listens and really cares. I went ahead to have a full profile blood work done and a bath for Huey.
The next day, Dr. Bailey called and emailed Huey’s results. I had more questions to ask via email, Dr. Bailey always replies in a day. Highly recommend this veterinarian hospital, great vets and staff:))))

My GF and I had the sad experience of taking her 19 year old cat to the vet for what we both knew might be the last time. Dr. Nagao made that very difficult time so much easier for both of us, and though we ultimately decided on euthanasia, she discussed a number of possible steps or treatments we could consider first, though she said they were all basically band-​aids for such an old and frail animal.
She was thoughtful, caring and sympathetic and never even suggested euthanasia until we asked if it was a reasonable option which she assured us it was. She explained that the cat had a variety of ailments, wasn’t going to improve and most importantly, that he had had a great life, which he had due to my GF’s care and love. We all knew it was time.
She and everyone there made an awful time bearable and helped us through it. Great job.

This was my first visit. I AM NEVER GOING TO ANY OTHER VET. I called as soon as they opened to make the emergency appointment. The receptionist was so nice and kind. She calmed me down as I had an emergency with my 8 yr old German Shepherd (who is aggressive towards people he doesn’t know, specially vets because he’s never been treated with much love and kindness).
The receptionist was able to get me an appointment the same day. When I came in my poor dog was SO scared and anxious because of past experiences. They immediately got us in an room. The vet’s assistant, Juan, was so kind and treated Argo with so much care. My dog who’s never, EVER LIKED ANY STRANGER, calmed down when Juan took his leash. I’ve never seen anybody handle him with such compassion. I was thinking «oh no, for sure he won’t like the vet». That was until Dr. Ghaffari came. SHE’S THE BEST VET EVER!!! I can not stress enough how much compassion, and kindness they showed to my poor dog who was terrified and almost blind. They took care of him and even though he was referred to a specialist, I’m so happy I went to this place. I will FOREVER keep coming. They were expensive (470.00 for blood work, sedative, eye exam, medication) but they are worth EVERY PENNY!

Dr. Bailey is a wonderful vet who really listens and cares about your pet. She balanced our aging dog’s need for treatment with cost, options, and comfort. It made the experience so much more personable knowing this is a part of your family but recognizing the limitations of putting her through unnecessary procedures.

My cats were patients here for the last 4 years. Sadly, both are now gone, passed to the rainbow bridge. But while they were alive, they had excellent care here– first with Dr. Steen and then with Dr. Quinn. And today, my 15 year old darling was gracefully and gently put to sleep by one of the caring vets. The entire staff was so supportive throughout the past difficult few days. And based on the last time we lost a pet, there will be a condolence card in the mail shortly. I highly recommend the staff and vets here.

I took Bella and Bentley my Cavalier King Charles Spaniels to Bay Animal since my 10 year old was a puppy. They have a day a week you could bring your pups in for ½ price shots. Bella has needed to stay for a doggie flu and when she burst and anal glad and the stuff and docs are amazing!
Bentley has had a knee problem and has needed to have X-​rays. I never felt as though they forced me into anything and I trusted their judgement. As I do not live in the South Bay anymore I miss everyone at Bay Animal!!!

Dr. Goodell is our first-​choice veterinarian in Manhattan Beach. My husband and I take our German Shepherd/​Border Collie mix to see him for annual exams. Dr. Goodell is professional, pleasant, and good at explaining the things we need to know to keep our dog healthy. Our dog likes him so much that he insists on giving Dr. Goodell a kiss on the lips every time we see him!
This past summer our dog developed skin irritation on his lower abdominal region. Dr. Goodell suspected it was an allergic response to flea saliva. His treatment plan was was highly effective. We received a couple of prescriptions for our dog that eliminated his symptoms without any bad reactions, injections, or other undesirable outcomes.
Dr. Goodell is a trusted veterinarian that I highly recommend.
