The Spicemill

This is a review of online purchase. I purchased some nuts. I liked the quality of the nuts and packaging. I also appreciated their prompt customer service and resolution of an issue. I will shop there again and recommend this place to others.

Have driven by here many times but always when they weren’t open. Finally rushed and made it. Spice Mill has a nice selection of spices — some similarities but also different than what you would find at Penzeys. This feels more like a place that sells to restaurants, large containers of a lot of standard spices and some interesting mixes too. If you like to cook, this is a place you should know about. Prices seemed good too.

Manchester never ceases to amaze me. It’s kind of a hokey city, one you might presume would have nothing unique to offer… but it just ain’t true. The Spice Mill is one of the many reasons to make a stop in Manchester, Connecticut.
Spice shops can get expensive. Just take a trip to Penzey’s in West Hartford, and you’ll see just how expensive. But The Spice Mill is different. It’s unassuming, pragmatic, and relatively cheap. Most all of their available spices are $ 3.75, and that’s for a quite large container, about 1″ round by 4″ tall.
And I assure you you’re not sacrificing quality, in fact, you’re gaining it. The management clearly has some good connections, because I haven’t been disappointed with a single thing I’ve bought there. Whole nutmeg, fragrant coriander, and a host of spice blends for grilling and flavoring.
The only slight downside is the experience. Whereas Penzey’s is a spice «boutique,» The Spice Mill is little more than some shelving thrown into a room. No matter though, form most definitely follows function in this case.

Oh, this place is my own personal hidden gem. Tons and tons of spices, cheaper than Penzey’s, and SUPER knowledgeable staff (who gave me the idea of roasting sweet potatoes with garam masala and fenugreek! mmmm). The Spice Mill distributes spices, herbs and seasonings in bulk quantities, catering primarily to the restaurant industry (it’s a pretty big warehouse neighboring Manchester’s rock wall gym), but luckily, it also houses a small retail shop. This retail shop carries every spice imaginable at amazing prices– ground spices, plus expensive items like saffron, as well as a wall of hot sauces, oils (even truffle oil), etc.
Months ago, my boyfriend and I picked up a container of smoked kosher salt from the Spice Mill and we’ve been back for refills! On our most recent trip, we scored some blood orange balsamic vinegar and candied dried papaya coated with hot chili powder.
Never know what I’m going to find here next!
