History
Established in 1874.
The Goodwin Funeral Home, originally known as A.E. Morse Undertakers, was established in 1874 at the corner of Elm and Stark Streets in downtown Manchester. In the late 1800’s, Morse’s business was purchased by Elmer D. Goodwin. Until his death in 1919, Elmer’s son, Lewis B. Goodwin, worked with his father in the funeral business.
In 1929, Elmer purchased the «Straw Mansion», the residence of the overseer of the Amoskeag Textile Mills, then the largest textile manufacturers in the world. Goodwin relocated his business to this historic building where the business remains today. Lewis’s son, David P. Goodwin, joined his grandfather, Elmer, in 1936, retiring in 1986. David’s son, Charles S. Goodwin joined the firm in 1974. He owned and operated the business until 2005 has since been sold to its present owners, Gary A. Carolan and Richard A. Meyer.
