Smart Move

They were very friendly and seemed to have a lot of resources to clear out the apartment. This was after a death and the estate was being liquidated. It was odd, however, that when I showed up on moving day (they had told me not to bother coming around as I had a busy work week) one of them was carrying a few items out in her arms. They were not packed. She suddenly handed them over to me saying I should have them for sentimental reasons.
Some items went to charity and some to auction. I was never given a complete list of what went where. Some pieces disappeared completely and the explanation was that they were so so little value that they were listed under «Miscellaneous.» These were not items of no value, either.
The apartment was cleaned up but some things were still left behind. The storage unit was left wide open with the lights on. When I asked for a more complete list they said it was too difficult.
A rather disappointing experience, in all.

Smart Move was amazing! Two movers and their truck helped me move from a one bedroom apartment to a studio apartment in DC. My roommate even threw a curveball on them and as they arrived he made them make an extra trip to Arlington. They never once complained and were always super nice — all at an amazing price! I was REALLY impressed with this company. A friend of mine was moving to DC and the movers that she had hired to move her stuff in, never showed up. It was Sunday, Memorial Day weekend and no movers in sight or sound for over 2 hours.
I told her, «Let me get on Unilocal and see what I can do.» Her expression was like «Yeah, right.» I looked up the closest movers to her area that had the best reviews. I called the lady and explained the situation. Within an hour and ½ we had 2 marines at our door ready to do the work! They did an excellent job, at a great price, with no complaining. My friend was so relieved and so impressed she said that she is going to Unilocal everything now!

We hired Smart Move to help my mother-​in-​law move out of her cluttered, unsafe house in Virginia. We live in California and my mother-​in-​law is very reclusive and difficult to reach by phone, so the move manager was essentially the only person who would be able to assume responsibility for maintaining momentum. Chaz and her staff did a fantastic job. They stayed on track and kept the process moving while maintaining a calm and soothing presence.
My MIL has a wee bit of a hoarding problem and was daunted by the prospect of sorting and packing up her stuff. Chaz’s approach made it feel manageable – she told my MIL, «Your job is just to decide what you want to take with you. We’ll take care of everything else.» And they did. They packed boxes, hauled trash, coordinated the actual physical move, held an estate sale, and did the final cleanout. Throughout the process, Chaz stayed in touch with us by phone and email and kept us abreast not only of how things were progressing but also of how my MIL seemed to be handling this major life change. She was compassionate and patient with my MIL and achieved great results. The estate sale made more money than my husband and I had expected it to, and Chaz took care of selling a few delicate items (firearms) to private buyers.
When it became clear that my MIL would need some help unpacking her things at her new house in Delaware and that there was a dearth of move managers in that area, Chaz and her staff offered to drive the 3 hours each way to help unpack for a day. By the time they headed home, everything was unpacked and in its place. They even delivered a few items from the Virginia house that my MIL had requested at the last minute.
Chaz and her crew are miracle-​workers, as far as we’re concerned. My MIL is enjoying a fresh start that simply would not have been possible without the kindness and hard work of everyone at Smart Move.

My mother was making a cross-​country move without any local family or friends who were able to help her pack, get organized, and take care of the thousands of little details that come up in a major move. My mom is very lovely, but she was not physically strong enough to move furniture and bedding around, and she wanted a little help dealing with all the vendors along the way (movers, car shipping company, etc). I was 3000 miles away across the country, and I felt powerless.
Along came Chaz. Based on a recommendation from a friend-​of-​a-​friend, I called Chaz and she was immediately sweet and understanding. She asked all the right questions, and was happy to come out and meet my mom to see if it would be a good fit. My mom and Chaz immediately hit it off (I think my mom actually wanted to bring Chaz with her on the move if she could). Chaz and her team came in, analyzed the situation, and gave my mom manageable checklists of things that needed to get done, as well as a complete timeline of the moving process.
On our request, Chaz brought her team of expert packers in and physically packed most of my mom’s boxes, and took her major furniture out to be sold. The packing was incredible — literally zero things broke in a 3000-​mile move, and every box was labeled and itemized with a checklist of everything that should come off the truck.
Chaz also connected us with trusted movers that saved us hundreds of dollars — before we met Chaz, we had initially contracted with another company that gave a low estimate but tried to increase the price on the day they were scheduled to come for the first load of stuff. With Chaz’s help, we fired those movers and instead hired the company that Chaz trusted. The company she recommended came on-​time, on-​budget, without breaking so much as a lightbulb.
Chaz was also happy to help manage vendors (it’s uncomfortable for a single woman living alone to have a parade of strangers through her house) and even went so far as helping with the move-​out inspection with the landlord.
