McKay Used Books

This is an amazing bookstore! They have everything you could possibly imagine. Personally I prefer used books that are 90% less that a new one. They have a large common language selection. This is a large store and worth going to!

One of those places that I enjoy visiting in Manassas.
I could spend hours to look around the place.
All my medical, nursing, and science books are from here.

Tons and tons and tons of options!!! However if you’re trying to sell or trade in books you’re out of luck cause they won’t give you anything for what they are valued at.

This place is great. I’ve gotten way too many books here that I haven’t read yet but always want to go back! Book, music, movie, TV lovers could easily spend 2+ hours here.

This is such a gem of a store! There are SO MANY BOOKS, you could spend hours just browsing. Everything is very well organized, parking is great and the staff is super friendly.

This place is amazing! I bought a book here for only a quarter! My husband and I walked out with eight books for only $ 21 total last time we visited. There is a huge, constantly rotating selection of not only books but CDs, vinyls, DVDs, comics, video games and board games. The place is neatly organized, spacious, well lit, and even has a bin of free books out front. It’s in a strip mall so parking is easy. Because of their really reasonable prices, great selection and lack of cat urine smell that unfortunately pervades other purveyors of used goods, this place is my favorite used bookstore in the region.

How fun, a real used book store in the (wider) DC metro area! There are so few book stores of any kind left around here. I’m not sure how I waited so long to find out about this place. Lots of books of all genres, including kids books and board books. Some CDs and DVDs, but I didn’t really look through those. The service isn’t great — they refused to let me buy a board book whose sticker had fallen off, even though almost all the board books are generically listed at identical prices, even after I begged, and then selling them books is a huge ordeal — but the selection is worth it.

CAN’T EVEN. When I moved last year, I had to leave most of my books behind. I’m just getting around to trying to rebuild my collection. Forget amazon, COME HERE! I replaced everything from Sarah Dessen to the Onion to David Sedaris to much more obscure stuff. It was like 20 books and Donkey Kong Country (Super Nintendo! Yassss!) and GET THIS: THE WHOLE LOT WAS UNDER 30 BUCKS! I was kinda sad thinking about the hundreds of bucks I’ve given soulless book chains over the years, but NEVER again. I’ll be back to reup my classroom library in August! A little off the beaten path but so worth it for teachers, parents and readers/​super Nintendo enthusiasts!

If you’re reading the reviews of this place and wondering, «Is it possible that the best book and CD store in the DC metro area is in Manassas?», the answer is «Yes it is.» I wouldn’t have believed it myself. But, McKay is a huge bookstore with a deep stock of both recent and older books at very low prices. The books are very well organized, and in case you get lost, each aisle has an alphabetic index showing how the store is organized. (Why doesn’t every bookstore — heck, every store — do this??)
Also, a very extensive used CD section, which, like the books, is very reasonably priced. And, unlike many stores that sell music and suddenly fall in love vinyl (because the owner read somewhere that sales have increased 8 zillion percent), McKay has some vinyl, but it doesn’t squeeze out the CDs and DVDs. Only minor quibble: The CDs aren’t completely organized — e.g., all the «B“s are together, but you’ll find the Beach Boys and B-​52s scattered throughout the section.
Wish it was closer — from where I live in So. FFX, it’s nearly an hour drive to McKay’s — probably longer than that from the heart of DC. But, if you value great book and CD stores, it’s worth the time.

I am a total bookworm & love to sell old books I don’t want anymore & get new ones for cheap prices! The staff is so accommodating & respectful towards customers. I have never left unhappy. I could spend hours there browsing through the hundreds & hundreds of items they have in store. I have also bought cd’s from them & never had a problem w those.
My only complaint is that I wish they would take textbooks for more money, however I understand that no one is going to buy them for leisure. But students might buy them for classes if they paid a little more for them! Who knows :)

I always walk in with a bag of stuff to trade and out with a stack of great new sewing and craft books. I love this place!

My father in law told me about this place and we instantly loved coming here. We are always looking for books to read and this place helps us do that without spending a ton of money on new books. They also take your old books. The only thing that I wish they had is a better way to track their books so you could find them easier but it isn’t that big of a deal.

Love this place! We come at least once a week. I have been to lots of used book stores and this is easily one of my all time faves. It’s huge. They also have movies, CDs, vinyls and some games.
Items that are new and popular can be priced a bit high, and you can just get them cheaper off Amazon. For example, I kept checking them for John Green books (Looking for Alaska and The Fault in our Stats) and I got them for like $ 3 cheaper from Amazon.
I was also looking for the movie Philomena that’s only a couple years old and they had it for $ 13 but I bought it off Amazon for $ 6. But I got Walk the Line — a movie that’s 10 years old — a nice 2 disk collectors edition for only $ 2.
So it’s a hit and a miss but if you are okay doing some digging you can get some great deals.

Poor customer service on trade-​ins. I brought in 4 bags of books. They offered me $ 95 in trade credit and $ 1 cash or $ 96 in trade. What a joke and a rip-​off.

I cannot say enough nice things about this store. Loved them when they were located in Centreville and I love them even more now!
They have a wide selection of books, DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs, comics, and even vinyl records. Service is great-​I actually called to see if they happened to have a specific book, and not only did they check but they even offered to hold it at the register for me!
While it can sometimes be hard to find a specific book or author because the books get moved around a lot by other shoppers, I hardly ever have a problem finding what I’m looking for and I ALWAYS end up leaving with at least 3 books.

So we were in the area and my little guy has been itching for some more books he reads from some of the book series that he likes so we decided to stop by.
First let me say that some of the used books here are WAY over priced. Yes, it is a discount off retail, but when you look at prices on Amazon (new and used) as well as Scholastic Book Clubs (for books for kids) you will notice the difference (especially paperbacks).
They do have used Skylanders, Xboxs, Game Systems, Board games as well! It is a HUGE selection of books… but so is the internet. ;)
Not sure I would stop by again unless we were desperate for some reads as this isn’t very close to where we leave and like I said I feel like there are better deals out there.

I first came Saturday morning with books to fill a bin and a half. I returned home to look at my book collection and decided I could part with more books. I loaded my car and returned to the store. I was told «You can’t sell us anything today. You were already here once.» Nowhere does their policy state that I can only be there once a day. The policy, both in store and on their site, states a person can sell four bins a day, which I was in compliance with. Furthermore, the lady confronted me while I was still in line, in front of other customers. It may benefit the ownership to send this lady to the business section of the store to pick up a few books on business/​customer service 101; never call out people in front of others, handle it privately.
This store is okay. It’s good for fiction novels, music CDs, and DVD movies. Most of their non-​fiction book collection is out of date. Their video games and audio books are overpriced.

McKay’s is the mecca of used bookstores, and really any bookstore for that matter.
Before you come to McKay’s, be sure to peruse through your bookshelves at home and bring any books you’re ready to part with to trade in. When you arrive at the store, check in with the super helpful staff to turn in your books. They will go through your books and assess if they want to keep your book, and if so for how much credit you’ll get back for each book. You then get a ticket that tells you the total amount of credit you have to find books with around the store. Sometimes they don’t take all of your books back, so for any «leftovers,» they have an area at the front of the store where you can leave any unwanted books and take any that others have left that you want for free.
I’ve only been here on weekends and I can definitely tell you that it gets pretty crowded. It’s good to plan another activity in the shopping center/​area while you wait to find out how much credit you’re getting for your books.
McKay’s isn’t decorated any way special, but it does the job! Rows upon rows upon rows of books. Every genre for every age group. Hardbacks & soft covers. Novels, cookbooks, bios, a huge children’s section, pretty much anything you could ever imagine & want. Often things you didn’t even know you wanted until you were there scavenging around. There is also a decent selection of DVDs, records, and video games.
My piece of advice is to come with patience. There is quite a lot to look for and it sometimes takes awhile to find what you’re looking for.
McKay’s has recently done some updates in terms of their computer system, especially in terms of when to know if your credit ticket is ready. The ticket that you’re given upon arrival has a word on it, and when your credit amount is ready the word shows up on a screen now.
People come to McKay’s from near & far, book lovers & those trying to get back into more reading (like me), no matter what enjoy it! There’s not another place like it around!

You will be hard pressed to find a store that beats the quality and selection of this mega media store. Hardback, paperback, no backs, vinyl LP’s & CD’s, comic books, games, DVD’s & Blue Rays… wow!
I like that they have a wide variety of quality CD’s of all types. Yes, I know we all have Smartphones these days that play our music, stream video’s and podcast’s but there is something that’s just really cool about finding the Temple of The Dog CD in mint condition and only paying $ 3.49. Yes, it’s going onto iTunes and then my phone so I’m still saving mucho dinero.
They also buy all types of media so clean out your dusty bookshelves and entertainment centers and get that stuff to McKay’s so we all can avoid paying retail!
