My husband and I have had our taxes done here the past three years. Like the previous reviewer, our tax situation has gotten a lot more complex over that time– being in and out of the military, being a student, having babies, getting married, having investments, etc.
Last year, after the DOD didn’t provide information showing they paid some of my student loans (which counts as income), we received a letter from the IRS saying that we failed to report income and owed upwards of $ 4K (we had previously received a refund). We were obviously quite distraught, but as it turned out, the IRS messed up in their calculations and a simple phone call from our accountant cleared it up and we didn’t have to pay anything.
It’s going to cost a bit more than going to a chain, but I think it’s well worth it to know that it’s done right. The accountants know what they are talking about and they stay in touch throughout the year with reminders, checklists, etc. It’s also pretty cool how they provide you with a summary folder afterword that includes your tax return, as well as a neat visual analytics sheet of your information.

I decided to have my taxes prepared this year by a CPA — due to all of the things I had to take into account — buying a home this past year, capital gains from stocks to make the down payment on the mortgage — and so on — I needed for my returns to be accurate. And I don’t trust accountant chains — such as H&R Block. In short, I felt my tax situation this year was more complex than normal and I was a lot more comfortable having someone who knows this stuff taking care of it. And having someone to represent me to the IRS should they have any questions about the preparation.
I visited with Brown and Associates, P.C. last Sunday afternoon — met with Nettie — dropped off my documents with her, filled out some forms, had a conversation — and then waited. Nettie called me a couple of times during the week for some additional documentation she needed.
They called me this morning to inform me the work was done and that I could stop in to pick up my paperwork.
I stopped in before lunch, met with Nettie, went over everything, and got some good additional advice from Christie — one of their Staff Accountants.
My only criticism of their business is knowing how much you are going to pay for their services. They charge by the forms they need to fill out — which makes sense. But, it would be helpful from an expectations and customer service standpoint if they had a checklist they could go over with you ahead of time to get an idea or guesstimate of how many and what forms would be needed and what that cost might be.
