General’s Ridge Golf Course

Very hilly and a ton of blind shots. Be careful in the cart as cartpath is very hilly and a lot of turns as well. Course is tough because even fairways are a challenge. Would play again for right price.
Staff is very friendly and helpful. Starting to notice footgolf groups here more.

Purchased a Groupon for Footgolf at this beautiful 18-​hole course! We rented carts, which I would recommend as the holes can be pretty spread apart. The only problem we had was the signage was a little unclear and we accidentally started at Hole 5. (Go right at the start). Bathrooms available on the course, and we saw several deer. Footgolf is only available after 3pm on the weekend. I also enjoyed that we did not run into too many golfers on the course.

I don’t know if it’s true but another reviewer said that General’s Ridge is, «The hardest municipal course in northern Virginia.» I can agree with that. I can also agree with this being one of the most awesome courses under $ 50 for riding 18 in Nova. Rolling hills, challenging valleys, high holes and tight passes. As long as you don’t lose your balls and keep up your pace of play you should have fun. Note: Pace of play is a huge deal here because of the elevation changes a small backup on the 13^th can cause a huge problem for people thereafter as the issue aggravates itself.

Generals Ridge is my home course. I love that course. But it is now dead to me. Foot golf was bad enough. The foot golfers have no understanding of golf etiquette. They talk and scream while you swing. The concept of right of way is lost on them. As if that was not bad enough, they now added monster holes to their greens. I know this is to appease amateur golfers but the problem is two fold. On the one side, amateur golfers should not be playing Generals Ridge. It’s the hardest municipal course in northern Virginia. The second problem is that I should not have my hole obscured by some fad concept when I came to play real golf. You’re doing too much Generals Ridge. And now you are dead to me.

I have played here a few times and this place is going down hill fast. Showed up on a Sunday morning for a 0900 tee time and the driving range is closed. Ask the guy behind the desk why and he says he has no balls to sell. So, they don’t even pick the range the day before so they can have some balls to sell so you can warm up. The course is in good shape, but some tee boxes are pretty bare. The biggest problem is the pace of play. It took 5+ hours to get around because one group held everyone else up, and good luck finding a Marshal to help because there isn’t one. Very little customer service here.

I have played here a few times and love the challenge. Te last time I played a few of the holes had just be aerated so there was extra grass around on the fairways but that will only improve the course next time in play. The only problem I have is the slow golfers. If you can hit the ball straight, you will have no problem. If you can’t hit the ball straight, get some lessons, play an easier course, then go to GR for a great experience.
The clubhouse is small. There isn’t a ice and water machine. There isn’t someone who is going to make you feel like your someone special and towel off the clubs YOU got dirty. It’s not a country club. It’s an awesome golf course. If you think otherwise you probably just can’t hit straight and that’s your fault.

The layout was fine, but frustrating at times. Definitely get a course book (if they have them) if you haven’t played here. Numerous times I drove the ball well through the fairway. It’s narrow and sometimes you’re hitting 2+ clubs longer into uphill greens. Also you may have blind shots into greens even though you’re 100 yards away.
Conditions were pretty bad throughout. Tee boxes were shaggy, course was so dry you would hit the left side of the fairway and end up in the right rough, a third of the fairways were half dirt, some greens had stripes of sand running through them, and the green speeds were very inconsistent. As for the pin locations, this course had some of the more impossible pin locations I have seen in a while. There were four greens where it was impossible to stop the ball if you were above the hole, meaning I had some putts that had to be followed by a chip. And to top it off, the flat greens were slow and the undulating greens were fast, hence the previous complaint.
In summary I have to say General’s Ridge was easily the worst course I have played in the last 5 years.

Tricky, tight course built on a plot of land not really fit for a golf course. Lots of blind shots, and really slopy greens with odd pin placements — on some greens, the best way to make the putt is to put it about a foot past the whole and let it roll back.
Major complaint is the pace of play. We played a mild january day with a 12:04 tee time. At 5:15 PM and in fading light we finish up the brutal 16^th hole and decide to call it quits. This was on schedule for a 5.5+ hour round — totally unacceptable. The course really backed up between holes 3 and 4. We probably waited for 25 – 30 minutes to tee off on #4. A call to the pro shop to get the marshall out was unproductive, and pace remained slow. That is poor management. Save your time and avoid General’s Ridge.

Wear your hiking golf shoes because you will be.
There is more than one ‘Ridge’ so they should rename it.

Hole number 16 is extremely difficult and unforgiving.
The fairways, greens and tee boxes are in great shape.
I played at 10a on a Sat morning and it was a nearly five hour round.
Very slow play and the Superintendents did nothing to speed up play.
With all the ridges, the geriatric crowd has an additional handicap.
They have a nice driving range and practice putting green.
We had a turkey and cheese sandiwch and a hot dog on the turn. Quite tasty and they were quick and reasonably priced.

I played here once about 3 years ago and didn’t think it was so bad. I remember the round taking forever, to the point that my friend and I had to leave after the 14^th hole. We drove out from DC and played there in the morning because we were supposed to be somewhere in Clifton that afternoon. We were at 5 hours through 14…
In any case, I figured it was a slow day and our other two friends weren’t the best, so we’d give it another shot especially since it was so «practical» in its pricing. I regret every decision.
First of all, we had 8 scheduled to show up, but you might have heard about the crazy Derecho storm. Well three of the guys had either a tree fall on their car or their basement was flooded or their power was out or some combination of the above, so we were only able to get 5 guys out. We figured, no big deal, we’ll head out as a two and a three and switch it up as the day went along.
We walked into the clubhouse and it was just sad. The carpets are dirty, let alone with a pattern from what appears to be decades past. The «pro shop» was sparse and looked like it was just a few shirts that were from seasons past. I don’t even know if there was a restaurant, or even a snack bar, because the building was so small and cramped. The bathroom was DISGUSTING. The floors were dirty, the one stall in the men’s room looked was absolutely filthy. I couldn’t even look at it. They had a «locker room» area which consisted of a bench with a broken leg. That didn’t matter though, because the «locker room» was being used to store napkins, plates, and other kitchen items (I assumed that meant there was a kitchen SOMEWHERE).
After that, we went outside and the starter said we should go off as a three and a two, but we could join up at the second and he’d come check on us by the 5^th to see how our pace as a five-​some was. If we were moving well, he’d let us keep together. We said, sure. We’re relatively good golfers and keep it moving. Well, even though we went out with no one in front of us for at least 20 minutes, we caught up to a threesome on the third hole… and never got off their tails. We got caught from behind by a two some and a three some behind them. The whole time this threesome in front of us basically refused to play ready golf, walking from ball to ball as a group (it was cart path only to top it off), watching each other shoot, giving advice, and then walking back to the carts together to drive on. It was so bad, the starter came and apologized to us around the 8^th hole (the group of five) for being held up by the threesome.
When we got to 9 though, another marshall came driving up to us and yelling about how «You guys are a two and a three, right?» I said, «No, sir. The other starter sent us out as a five. We just spoke with him again on the last tee box and he apologized to us for not being able to play faster, actually.» He laid into me. His name was Jack. He told me that there was no way they’d send us out as a five and we had to break up and he didn’t want to «catch» us again. I told him to do me a favor, since we were about to tee off on 9 and pass the clubhouse, to go find the other guy and ask him, and at the turn, if he found otherwise, we’d leave the course, no questions asked. If our story was backed up, we’d pass by for an apology and keep moving. Well, I never saw that guy again, but the guy that sent us out came and apologized for his coworker and a few more times for the pace of play.
When all was said and done, not only did we play some of the worse golf we could remember in years… not only did we lose plenty of balls on what appeared to be «good» shots into blind terrain… not only did we get yelled at and grossed out and had an all around miserable time… but the round that had a tee time of 9:24am ended sometime just after 3pm.
The course itself wasn’t in BAD shape, but it wasn’t in good shape. For the price, the condition wasn’t bad. The layout is terrible. The facilities are terrible. The staff, save for the one guy, was terrible and trying to upsell me on buying player cards and this and that. The drink cart girl was sweet though. No one wiped our clubs after the round and we had to load them in and out of our own car.
All in all, I will not be going back to General’s Ridge EVER again and I suggest you don’t either.

The greens on this course are ridiculously fast and quick. Being below the hole is not enough — number 17 especially — unless you hole-​out, the ball will roll back to you, if not past you. This was the case on most of the holes.
In addition, the pace was less than stellar — saw a Marshall on the 4^th hole, which seemed a bit early but never saw him again. 5 hours later…
The only good thing about this place are the gas prices in Manassas!
I won’t go back.

I love GR for the challenge, not for the food and perhaps not anymore for the service in general (npi).
1. The snack bar is the saddest I have seen in forever! It wasn’t open for breakfast at 0830… the offerings were slim when we came for lunch and the beer selection is paltry!
2. The course is in pretty decent shape. they still need to get the rating and slope fixed
3. The selection of women’s clothing is missing. They have a few shoes but nothing of value!
I remember playing GR when it first opened, I would like a repeat of the hey day!
This review has nothing to do with the punishment GR meted out today!
